Well, honestly . . . .I really haven’t been diving much lately. There have been several “incidents”, from mechanical to weather to political to cultural, that have prevented me from spending much time in the water, and I’ve been spending quite a bit of time attached to the dock, rather than out on the reefs. But the good thing is that those “incidents” make for great stories, and the chapters in my upcoming coffee table book, “A Year in the Bush” are coming together nicely (actually, the longer I stick around, the closer it comes to being re-titled “Two Years in the Bush”). I know people aren’t going to believe half this stuff, but its 100% real. Among other craziness, I’ve dealt with Suzanne’s life-threatening infection and consequent evacuation, gotten into a rumble, been accused of stealing from a village, and had 2 earthquakes at 7.1 and 7.2 magnitude. Yeah, its been a wild few months, but I’ve still managed to squeeze out a few keepers.
I’ve been experimenting with extremely low depth of field in a lot of my macro shots. I really like the way these are turning out. True, I have to take 50 shots to land one that’s in focus, but when only the eyeball of the subject is sharp, it adds a whole new dimension to the image. Several of the shots from this gallery are destined to be limited edition prints, once I return to the USA. There will be several, but the two that I’m most anxious to see blown up to 5 or 6’ are the 10th and 11th in this series; the two grey reef sharks at the surface, and the baby frogfish in the sargassum with his image reflected off the surface a 1/2” above him.
