The single biggest shame about coming here, is that I was one of the last people to get to enjoy this awesome charter itinerary is no more. Yes, the Wind Dancer boat left Granada to start its new life in Cocos Island, Costa Rica, just a few weeks after I was there. While I can’t wait to dive Cocos again aboard the Wind Dancer, I’m almost more excited to get back to this place! In a nutshell, its the best diving I’ve ever done in the Caribbean.
I’d have to call this The Lembeh Straits of the Caribbean. Its muck diving at its finest, but also has brilliant reefs. More seahorses than I’ve seen anywhere else (5 in one dive), decorator crabs beyond imagine, cave systems, and cool wrecks - all set underneath the set of Pirates of the Caribbean, and some of the most stunning topside scenery imaginable. The substrate is made up mostly of black sand and a mix of hard & soft coral. While you can’t expect the biodiversity of Indonesia or PNG, Captain Simon made a bold claim on the opening briefing; “I’ll bet that everyone here will see at least one species they’ve never seen before”. After around 4000 dives in the Caribbean alone, I just rolled my eyes. He was proven right about 10 minutes into the first dive.
The Digital Dancer workshop was great, filled with students ranging from total beginners to folks with existing pro portfolios. Unfortunately, the workshop was cut short by a false alarm Swine Flu scare with the Grenada government, but we still managed to squeeze in all of the learning and most of the diving into a condensed week. Thanks to all the attendees for your cooperation and understanding!
Lets just hope Peter Hughes or someone else puts a new liveaboard back on this itinerary soon.
