Time for you to show off! Join me on one of my upcoming workshop
trips, and perfect your technique! Each year I host several workshop
trips in awesome diving locations, and work with dive clubs, photo
societies, government agencies, and private groups to meet the
needs of customers ranging from absolute beginners to aspiring
professionals. In conjunction with the liveaboards of the Peter Hughes Fleet, I teach week-long workshops aboard their luxury vessels ranging from 120-140’ in length. While land-based workshops still provide a great learning environment, the liveaboard photo/video workshops are for those truly committed to learning the art, and want to really reach the next level. Make no mistake, all of my workshops are intense and demanding, but that is what you should expect!
The most thorough workshop available
A typical workshop covers all the following aspects of underwater photography:
Intro to YOUR camera - Everyone’s gear will be different, and we need to find out how YOUR’S works (this includes RTFM, so please remember to bring it).
General Concepts - Everything from how to position yourself in the water, to how to approach a grouper, to how to make sure we don’t damage the reef while working.
Exposure - for those with manual capability, you will master f-stops, shutter speeds, strobe lighting, and ISO. For those with “Point & Shoot” cameras, you will master the different settings that effect exposure, such as EV, ISO, and many other settings, depending on your camera’s model.
Composition - Get artsy-fartsy and understand what makes the difference between a snapshot and a work of art. There are many tricks here, some will sound completely alien, and some you’ll recognize from shooting topside.
Equipment Technique - understand what gear is used for what type of image. This also includes gaining a firm understanding of how far your equipment can be creatively pushed, as well as what its limitations may be.
Equipment Handling - you’ve invested big bucks in this stuff, so lets make it last. Learn how to minimize the risk of flood and what you need to do when it happens.
Post-Production - Now that you have this chaotic collection of 8000 underwater images, what are you going to do with them? Organization, databasing tools, printing software, backing up, and all the techno-aspects of being a digital photographer. Is this session, we also cover manipulation techniques including an intro to Adobe Photoshop (or your similar application), and some advanced techniques that are specific to underwater.
Its really quite customizable. I’ve taught nearly 700 students in over 150
workshops, with students ranging from absolute beginners with a Point & Shoot camera, to seasoned scuba instructors with thousands of dives and a DSLR. While my schedule is listed above, I’m also available for private workshops, and work regularly with dive shops and dive clubs. Let me know what you’re into, and what your goals are, and join me on one of my adventures to learn how to start producing ART that you’ll be proud to hang on your walls!!!
