Oman Dhofar: photographing Arabian humpback whales and the great upwelling

Underwater photography in Dhofar, Oman: non-migratory Arabian humpback whales, the Khareef upwelling, and whale sharks. Seasonal guide and natural light approach.

Oman Dhofar: photographing Arabian humpback whales and the great upwelling

In southern Oman, the Dhofar governorate hosts one of the Indian Ocean's most extraordinary marine ecosystems. While northern dive sites around Muscat and the Daymaniyat Islands are celebrated for coral diversity, Dhofar comes alive during the summer Khareef monsoon.

As coastal winds trigger the upwelling of cold, nutrient-dense water, the marine food web explodes, attracting whale sharks, manta rays, and the elusive Arabian Sea humpback whale.

The isolated Arabian Sea humpback whale

With fewer than one hundred individuals estimated to survive, this distinct population is critically endangered. Unlike polar migrants, these whales remain in the warm northern Arabian Sea year-round.

Capturing imagery in these productive waters requires tactical awareness: - Plankton-rich waters often limit visibility to 8-15 meters, requiring close-range wide-angle approaches. - Avoiding backscatter means aligning with ambient light rather than deploying strobes into thick water. - Approaching on breath-hold with quiet, deliberate finning prevents startling surface-feeding mammals.

Whale sharks and coastal reefs of Mirbat

From late September through November, seas settle while plankton density remains high. Whale sharks cruise the rocky headlands off Mirbat, and coastal bays fill with mobula rays and honeycomb morays.

To select an agile camera setup for quick pelagic encounters, browse our underwater photo gear comparator and check species encounter seasons on our marine wildlife calendar.

Planning an expedition to Salalah

Travelers arrive at Salalah International Airport before transferring to coastal bases around Mirbat. Working with ethical boat operators adhering to strict distance guidelines is essential to safeguarding this fragile cetacean community.

Learning how to read marine behavior and anticipate animal trajectories under natural light is a key skillset taught in the AquaExposure training program.

Questions about the Journal

What is the Khareef upwelling in southern Oman?

The Khareef is the summer monsoon affecting southern Oman between June and September. Strong winds push warm surface water offshore, drawing cold, nutrient-rich deep water to the surface and triggering massive phytoplankton blooms.

Why are Arabian Sea humpback whales unique?

They are the only non-migratory humpback whale population in the world, residing year-round in the northern Indian Ocean and relying on regional upwellings.
