The cost of a dive trip rarely hides in the airfare alone. Between packages, rental, tips and photo extras, the total climbs fast. This calculator lays it all out to estimate the real budget of your next trip.

A liveaboard or resort quote shows an "all-inclusive" price that systematically omits the same line items. Underwater photographers discover them on site, when it is too late to adjust the budget.
First blind spot: excess baggage. An underwater photo rig weighs between 8 and 15 kg depending on configuration. Added to 20 kg of dive gear, you exceed most airlines' free allowance. The surcharge ranges from EUR 50 per leg (European budget airline) to EUR 200 per segment (long-haul). On a round trip with a stopover, expect 3 to 4 billed segments.
Second forgotten item: nitrox. An unlimited nitrox package on a liveaboard costs between EUR 100 and 300 per week. Some operators include it, others charge extra. For a photographer, nitrox extends bottom time in the macro zone (12 to 20 metres) by 10 to 15 minutes. That is often the difference between a frustrating dive and a productive one.
Third invisible line: tips. On a liveaboard, the norm is 10 to 15% of the cruise price, split between crew and guides. On a EUR 3,000 week, that means EUR 300 to 450 that appear nowhere in the booking. In some destinations (Indonesia, Philippines), shore-based dive guide tips add EUR 5 to 10 per dive.
Our calculator includes these items from the start. It asks about your luggage setup, nitrox usage and accommodation type to produce a realistic budget, not a marketing one.
A 7-day liveaboard trip to the Maldives averages between 4,000 and 6,000 EUR per person, flights included. This covers accommodation, dives, meals and transfers. Nitrox, tips and gear insurance are extras.
Commonly forgotten costs include excess luggage fees (15 kg of photo gear), marine park taxes, nitrox, crew tips on liveaboards, DAN insurance and photo gear insurance. Our calculator includes all these items.
Yes, standard travel insurance typically does not cover underwater photo equipment. Dedicated gear insurance costs about 3 to 5% of equipment value per year. For an 8,000 EUR setup, expect 240 to 400 EUR.
The Mediterranean (France) and the Azores offer the best value for European underwater photographers, with total costs between 1,500 and 2,500 EUR for 5 to 7 days. The Philippines are also affordable despite the longer flight.
Travel in low season for cheaper flights, choose a resort over a liveaboard, share a room, rent gear locally if possible, and book early. Nitrox is not always necessary depending on dive profiles.
