The first instinct when getting into underwater photography is to look at what the pros use. Nauticam, 230mm domes, dual Inon Z-330 strobes. The total budget quickly exceeds EUR 12,000. For a beginner who does not yet know what type of photography attracts them underwater, that is a disproportionate investment.
The starting question is not "what is the best housing?" but "what camera do you already own?" The housing must match your camera body exactly. If you have a Canon R6 Mark II, the choice is between Ikelite (polycarbonate, EUR 1,500), Nauticam (aluminum, EUR 3,500) and Sea&Sea (aluminum, EUR 2,800). The Nauticam housing is better on almost every metric, but the Ikelite offers unmatched value for testing the discipline.
The second critical choice is lighting. Underwater, beyond 5 metres depth, warm colours (red, orange) disappear. An external flash (strobe) restores all colours within a 1 to 2 metre range. For macro, a single strobe is enough. For wide-angle, two strobes eliminate cast shadows and cover a wider field. Our comparator shows recommended combinations based on your lens choice.
Third point often underestimated: the arm system. Arms connect the strobes to the housing via clamps. Length and material (aluminum, carbon fibre, or buoyant plastic) affect the total rig buoyancy and ease of strobe positioning. Arms too short force you to bring the strobes closer to the subject, creating harsh lighting with illuminated particles (backscatter). Arms too long make the rig unwieldy in tight reef passages.
For beginners, an Ikelite polycarbonate housing offers the best value (1200 to 1800 EUR). It is transparent (visual leak detection), robust, and available for most Canon, Sony and Nikon bodies.
The best specialized retailers in Europe are UW Camera Store (Netherlands), PanOceanPhoto (Germany) and Photo Denfert (Paris). They offer expert service, VAT included, and no customs fees.
A complete beginner setup (housing + lens + strobe + arms) starts around 3000 EUR with Ikelite. A pro setup with Nauticam, dual strobes and wide-angle dome can exceed 15,000 EUR.
Generally, buy in Europe. US prices seem lower but add 21% import VAT + 3-5% customs duty + 50-200 EUR shipping. Total cost is often equivalent or higher, without local warranty.
The best sources are Wetpixel Classifieds (specialized forum), dedicated Facebook groups, and some retailers like UW Camera Store which occasionally offer certified used gear.
