
SEA&SEA announces the YS-D12S CUBee, a budget strobe sharing its battery with Olympus/OM System TG cameras. What it changes for a first strobe, and what we still don't know before the late-October 2026 shipping date.
A message keeps coming back from my students who shoot with an Olympus TG: "I'm starting to feel the limits of no-strobe, what should I buy to start?" Until now, my answer always circled back to the same problem. Compact strobes on the market (Ikelite, Sea&Sea, Inon) are built for generic use, with their own battery, their own charger, their own format. You add one more piece to the bag, with no link to the camera you already own.
SEA&SEA just released a strobe that breaks that logic, aimed at a single target: TG camera owners.
The YS-D12S CUBee (the "CUBee" nickname will likely stick in conversation, so be it, alongside the full official product name) uses the same LI-92B lithium-ion battery as Olympus and OM System TG cameras. In practice, that means a diver traveling with a TG-6 or TG-7 can charge both camera and strobe on the same UC-92 charger, sharing the same spare battery format.
That is not a cosmetic detail. On a trip, every extra charger and every extra battery format is one more line in the bag, one more power strip slot to find, one more item to forget at home. Reducing camera and strobe to a single battery ecosystem simplifies a logistics problem most beginners underestimate before their first photo trip.
The CUBee triggers in RC (remote control) mode, the wireless TTL protocol used by TG cameras, with no cable or separate optical trigger to add.
What's still missing to fully judge the product: the exact price, real-world color rendering, and a field report on RC mode reliability in murky water, where optical wireless protocols sometimes struggle to hold the signal.

That said, there is a precise moment where a strobe becomes relevant: close-range macro, where the colors of a nudibranch or a shrimp no longer reveal themselves without fill light, or depths past 20 to 25 meters where red and orange have vanished. That is exactly the segment the CUBee targets: a simple, presumably affordable first strobe (pending official pricing) for someone who has already worked their TG in natural light and genuinely feels the limit.
If you are looking for a versatile strobe for a mirrorless or DSLR system in a dedicated housing, the CUBee is not built for that. It is built for the TG ecosystem, full stop.
This article is written from the announcement, not a field test: the CUBee only starts shipping in late October 2026. Three unknowns remain before recommending it without reservation: final pricing, actual availability in Europe, and the reliability of RC triggering in real diving conditions (reduced visibility, camera-to-strobe distance on an articulated arm).
