In the demanding world of scuba diving, where every detail counts for the safety and pleasure of exploration, choosing your gear is a process that deserves full attention. Among the essential tools that accompany a diver, the dive computer occupies a primary place, acting as a true trusted companion beneath the surface. It is not just a technical instrument, but an extension of our vigilance, a keeper of our limits, and a precious guide in the complexity of decompression profiles. It is in this perspective that we approach today a model which, despite the passage of time, continues to generate interest and prove its worth in the field: the Mares Nemo Wide. Its design, so distinctive, marked an era and continues to offer a singular approach to readability and ergonomics, qualities which, underwater, take on a very concrete dimension.

Global Score: 3.3/5

Algorithm & stops: Conservative and reassuring management

The heart of any dive computer lies in its decompression algorithm. The Mares Nemo Wide relies on the Mares-Wienke RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model) model, a proven approach recognized for its conservatism. This model integrates the management of deep stops, an essential safety feature allowing for more progressive desaturation and potential reduction in micro-bubble formation. It is possible to adjust the algorithm's level of conservatism across several levels, offering valuable flexibility to adapt to diving conditions and the diver's profile. The ascent rate is displayed both analogically and numerically, a double indication that makes control and precision much easier, which are fundamental elements for preventing decompression sickness. This algorithm is particularly suited for repetitive recreational diving, where repeating dives demands rigorous tissue management.

Air & multi-gas: Remarkable versatility for its age

Despite its age, the Nemo Wide demonstrates remarkable versatility in gas management. It allows you to configure and manage up to three different gas mixtures, including air and Nitrox with oxygen percentages ranging from 21% to 99%. This capability is a major asset for divers wishing to optimize their decompression profiles by using enriched mixtures. The predictive gas switching function underwater (Gas Switch) is an advanced feature that, for divers trained in accelerated decompression, offers significant tactical flexibility. It is important to note, however, that this computer does not support Trimix or rebreathers (CCR), and does not offer wireless air integration. These limitations clearly position it in the advanced recreational and light technical diving segment, without claiming to meet the demands of more committed technical dives.

Screen & ergonomics: An interface designed for action

This is undoubtedly the strong point of the Mares Nemo Wide, which has earned it its reputation and longevity. Its panoramic mineral LCD screen offers readability so direct that even with thick gloves or in reduced visibility conditions, the information remains clear and distinct. The 170-degree viewing angle is exceptional, allowing easy reading without having to constantly adjust the orientation of the computer. Data is intelligently distributed, avoiding visual clutter and overlapping, which is crucial for quick decision-making underwater. The 4-button navigation is a model of intuitiveness. It eliminates the frustration of complex menus and delicate manipulations, making access to functions simple and logical. The timed backlighting ensures adequate visibility in the dark, completing an ergonomics designed for diver efficiency and comfort.

Battery life & cell: Serenity of durable energy

Autonomy is an essential criterion for any diving equipment, and the Mares Nemo Wide excels in this area. Powered by a standard CR2450 button battery, it offers a very satisfactory lifespan. A considerable advantage of this model is the user's ability to replace the battery themselves. Mares designed an isolated waterproof compartment, with a simple to reposition O-ring, which minimizes the risk of flooding the main electronics during replacement. This ease of maintenance ensures peace of mind, especially during trips or cruises where access to an authorized service center may be limited. A low battery indicator alerts the diver long before the situation becomes critical, allowing for anticipated replacement and avoiding any unexpected interruptions.

Connectivity & app: The limitations of age

It is in the area of connectivity that the Mares Nemo Wide reveals its age. Designed before the widespread adoption of Bluetooth in diving equipment, it does not offer this feature. To transfer your dive data to a computer (PC or Mac) or to update the firmware, it is necessary to use the dedicated USB interface, the Mares Drak. This interface is often sold separately, representing an additional cost to consider. Synchronization is done via the Dive Organizer software for PC or Divers Diary for Mac. Although this software is functional, the lack of direct wireless transfer to a smartphone or tablet can seem restrictive for divers used to more recent technologies. It is a compromise to accept to benefit from the other qualities of this computer.

Compass & instruments: Focused on essentials

The Mares Nemo Wide focuses on the essentials and does not offer an integrated electronic compass. For navigation, you will therefore have to rely on a traditional analog compass. However, it compensates for this absence with a particularly effective bottom timer mode. This mode, which includes a stopwatch function, is extremely readable and has long been favored by technical divers as a backup instrument. It offers Air, Nitrox, and Bottom Timer modes, covering the basic needs of the majority of divers without cluttering the interface with superfluous features that could complicate navigation.

Robustness & depth: Designed to last

Robustness is an indispensable quality for equipment destined to evolve in an environment as demanding as the marine environment. The Mares Nemo Wide is built to last. Its rectangular case is protected by an elastomer shroud that effectively absorbs shocks and impacts, common during boat handling or entries. The screen is protected by a tempered mineral glass, offering good scratch resistance, a significant asset to preserve readability over time. The computer is certified for a maximum depth of 150 meters, which demonstrates the quality of its construction and waterproofing, far beyond the limits of standard recreational diving.

Price & Support: Exceptional value on the used market

The Mares Nemo Wide offers exceptional value, particularly on the used or clearance market, where it can be found at very attractive prices (around 250 EUR). This is a remarkable opportunity to acquire a large-format computer managing three gases at a very affordable cost. However, the potential cost of the PC Drak interface must be kept in mind if it is not included. Regarding customer service, Mares generates polarized reviews. Some divers report quick exchanges under warranty, sometimes in eight days, while others signal delays or some rigidity regarding shipping costs. In this context, the role of the local dealer is crucial, as they act as a buffer and facilitate the process. It is therefore recommended to purchase from a trusted dealer capable of providing effective support if needed.

The Mares Nemo Wide is aimed at a category of divers who prioritize clarity and simplicity above all. It is the ideal companion for the Open Water Diver or Level 1 who wants a reliable and easy-to-read instrument, without drowning in a multitude of superfluous functions. Its multi-gas management also makes it relevant for Advanced or Level 3 divers who practice Nitrox decompressions and are looking for a proven solution to optimize their profiles. It is a wise choice for those who appreciate intuitive 4-button navigation, which is particularly effective with thick gloves or under stress. On the other hand, it will not suit technology enthusiasts who demand instant transfer to a smartphone, a vibrant OLED screen, or wireless air integration. If your priority is pure performance and cutting-edge connectivity, other more recent models will be more suitable. The Nemo Wide is a tool, not a gadget.

Mares after-sales service, like many brands, can evoke varied experiences. Some users report quick and efficient exchanges under warranty, with handling times that can be very short, sometimes around eight days. However, others report delays or some inflexibility, particularly regarding shipping costs for returns or out-of-warranty repairs. It is important to emphasize that support quality often depends on the relationship with the local dealer. A good dealer will be a precious intermediary, capable of facilitating the process and providing personalized follow-up. It is therefore highly recommended to privilege purchases from a recognized and trusted professional, who can accompany you effectively if needed. The durability of your equipment also depends on quality support.

The Mares Nemo Wide is powered by a CR2450 button battery, a choice that has significant practical implications for the diver. The major advantage of this system is the user's ability to replace the battery themselves. This independence is particularly valuable during distant trips or cruises, where access to an authorized service center may be difficult, if not impossible. You are not dependent on a technician for a simple operation, which guarantees the continuity of your dives. You just need to have a spare battery on hand. Compared to integrated rechargeable batteries, which require regular access to a power source and can pose problems in case of power failures or faulty chargers, the replaceable battery offers increased flexibility and reliability in isolated environments. This is a feature that, for many, is a guarantee of peace of mind underwater.

If the Mares Nemo Wide has captured your attention with its readability and ergonomics, it is interesting to note that the Mares brand offers other models that can meet different needs.
