The SeaLife SportDiver Ultra Duo 5000 set: Ultra + two Sea Dragon 2500 lights (5000 lumens). A premium, ready-to-use setup. Is it worth the €1229 price tag?
There comes a point in a photographer's underwater journey where images start to consistently lack light. Not at 3 meters deep in full sunlight – but at 15, 20, or 25 meters, late in the afternoon, in slightly murky water. That's when the number of available lumens really makes a difference.
The SportDiver Ultra Duo 5000 set was designed for this type of situation.
The Duo 5000 combines the SportDiver Ultra - the large format smartphone housing from SeaLife - with two Sea Dragon 2500 photo-video lights mounted on a double Flex-Connect tray with two handles. This provides a total of 5,000 lumens, housed in a casing capable of accommodating the latest large smartphones.
The double tray allows you to position the two lights on either side of the camera's axis. This is the classic configuration for underwater lighting: two symmetrical light sources that eliminate harsh shadows and give the subject a natural volume. In video, the result is immediately visible compared to a single-light setup.
The price is 1,229 euros.
The difference between one and two flashlights is not just a matter of quantity. It's not simply "twice the amount of lumens."
With a single light source, the subject is illuminated from one side. Shadows form on the other side. For some subjects, this directional effect is desirable – it creates contrast and texture. For other subjects, particularly portraits of creatures or wide shots of shipwrecks, symmetrical lighting is more appropriate.
Two torches also provide more flexibility in adjustment. You can disable one of the two, reduce the power on one, and keep the other at its maximum. With the Flex-Connect system, you can adjust the angle of each torch independently.
The Duo 5000 set targets a specific profile: divers who regularly film underwater, who dive between 10 and 30 meters, and who want a complete package without having to assemble the components themselves.
At €1,229, this is a significant investment. To compare it to an alternative: a DiveVolk SeaTouch 4 Max Plus housing with two equivalent photo/video lights would bring you to a similar budget, with the advantage of accessing the phone's native mode. These are two different approaches, neither one being inherently better than the other.
If you are already within the SeaLife ecosystem (you already have Flex-Connect equipment, a relationship with an SCUBAPRO dealer, or you appreciate the simplicity of an all-in-one system), then the Duo 5000 Set is a good choice. If you are starting from scratch and want maximum control over your images, it's helpful to compare the two ecosystems before investing.
Before spending €1,229 on a dual light setup, one question deserves to be asked: do you already have a good understanding of natural light?
Not theoretically - in practice. The angle relative to the sun, the ideal dive time, and interpreting surface conditions to anticipate what you will find at 15 meters. The AquaExposure training starts with this, before introducing artificial lighting. And some underwater photographers do most of their work between 5 and 15 meters, using only natural light, because they know how to position themselves and how to expose properly.
This is not a criticism of the setup - it's a reminder that torches add depth to images, but this technique transforms images in all conditions. Investing in training costs less than investing in equipment, and the benefits accumulate over time.
If you regularly dive between 15 and 30 meters and are filming, the 5000 lumens of this set will be worthwhile. If you're just starting out, or if you primarily dive in shallow water, controlled natural light is a more solid foundation.
