Introduction

This is a question that frequently arises among divers who travel extensively: How can you combine the power of a technical dive computer with a discreet design suitable for everyday wear, both in the office and on a cruise ship? A dive computer remains primarily a vital safety instrument, and miniaturizing this tool often requires significant compromises in readability or functionality.

With the Teric, Canadian manufacturer Shearwater has managed to integrate all its technical expertise into a compact case the size of a watch. Bright AMOLED screen, complete Trimix management, and a transparent algorithm: this review aims to determine whether the ergonomics of a small screen can match the reading comfort of the brand's larger models.

The verdict in summary

Overall score: 4.7/5CriterionScoreWhat it means
Algorithm & decompression stops5.0/5Transparent Bühlmann ZHL-16C model with adjustable Gradient Factors.
Air & multi-gas5.0/5Management of 5 OC gases and 5 CC gases, complete Trimix support, and CCR mode.
Screen & ergonomics4.8/5High-contrast circular AMOLED screen and navigation using 4 buttons.
Battery life4.0/5Li-ion battery offering 30 hours of dive time with wireless charging.
Connectivity & app4.5/5Very stable Bluetooth connection and a powerful Shearwater Cloud application.
Compass & instruments4.5/5Compensated electronic 3D compass and complete freediving mode.
Robustness & depth rating4.8/5Certified to 200m with scratch-resistant sapphire glass and stainless steel buttons.
Price & customer support4.2/5A significant investment but backed by the best customer support on the market.

This computer is ideal for: Demanding technical or recreational divers who want all the advanced decompression features in a stylish and ultra-readable watch format. This computer is not ideal for: Divers with a limited budget or those who prefer a very large rectangular screen to display all data without scrolling through pages.

Detailed Analysis

Algorithm & Decompression Stops (5.0/5)The Teric features the same processing engine as its larger counterparts. This is a major advantage- no function has been compromised due to the smaller size. The audible and vibration alerts are highly effective for drawing your attention.

The algorithm is based on the Bühlmann ZHL-16C model, with free adjustment of the Gradient Factors. The decompression display is clear, with the TTS (Time To Surface) always accessible. Shearwater also offers a key to unlock and install the alternative bubble model VPM-B for traditional technical divers.

### Learn More The Shearwater processing engine provides complete transparency regarding decompression. Divers can modify their Low and High Gradient Factors to precisely adjust conservatism at depth and near the surface. The graphical interface offers excellent readability of mandatory decompression stops and total ascent time.

Air & Multi-Gas (5.0/5)

This model handles literally everything that is possible to breathe underwater in an open-circuit configuration.

The Teric can manage 5 OC (Open Circuit) gases and 5 CC (Closed Circuit) gases. It allows for full Trimix diving and integrates a bailout mode for rebreathers with fixed PPO2.### For Further Information Gas management allows for the configuration of unlimited mixtures using helium and oxygen. Wireless air integration is available as an option to monitor up to 4 pressure transmitters. Gas transitions are smooth with automatic detection of configured breathing mixes.

Screen & Ergonomics (4.8/5)

This is a major advantage of this model. Despite its classic watch-style dial, the vibrant colors and infinite contrast of the deep blacks make it readable even in very murky water.

The circular screen is a 1.39-inch (3.53 cm) AMOLED color display with a resolution of 400x400. The four stainless steel 316 buttons are well-defined, but logically require slightly more dexterity when wearing thick waterproof gloves than a Perdix.

For Further Information AMOLED technology eliminates any viewing angle issues underwater. Fonts and colors are fully customizable to highlight the most important data for each diver. The absence of a touchscreen guarantees perfect operation in all conditions and in cold water.

Battery Life (4.0/5) The choice of an internal battery changes the diver's routine- you need to remember to charge your watch just like you charge your phone. The internal Li-ion battery (1.9 Wh) provides up to 30 hours of battery life in dive mode and 50 hours in classic watch mode. It recharges simply by placing the housing on its small wireless charging station, which is included. Note that the battery can only be replaced at the factory.

### For more information Wireless charging eliminates any risk of water ingress through a physical port. The charge indicator is extremely accurate and displays a reliable estimate of remaining dive time.

Connectivity & App (4.5/5)

Native Bluetooth Smart connectivity allows you to instantly synchronize your dive log with the Shearwater Cloud application. The app is available on mobile devices and desktop computers for detailed analysis of your decompression profiles.

### For more information Software updates for the device are performed wirelessly directly from the companion app. Shearwater's cloud ecosystem is one of the most stable and highly regarded by the technical diving community.

Compass & Instruments (4.5/5)

The Teric features a 3D digital compass with full tilt compensation. Its responsiveness underwater is remarkable, allowing for very precise underwater navigation in all positions.### For Further Information The compass can be displayed as a complete circular dial or as a simple, unobtrusive heading indicator at the bottom of the dive screen. Apnea and depth-only modes complement the measurement instruments.

Durability & Depth (4.8/5) Designed for durability, the housing combines an stainless steel bezel and buttons with a body made of technical polymer. The bezel effectively protects the scratch-resistant sapphire glass from impacts against rocks or the metal hulls of wrecks.

For Further Information The device is certified for a working depth of 200 meters, which far exceeds the requirements of recreational diving and corresponds to the profiles of even the most demanding tek dives.

Price & Customer Service (4.2/5) The Teric is positioned in the premium segment with a typical price of €1150. This high price is offset by exceptional customer service, which is globally recognized for its responsiveness.

For Further Information Shearwater provides impeccable support with minimal repair times and quick replacements in case of failure, which is reassuring for an investment of this magnitude.

Who is this computer for? Warning: Tek and Rebreather UseThe Teric is designed for a wide range of users, from recreational divers to highly technical divers, with features including Trimix and CC/BO (closed circuit with fixed PPO2). We remind you that using these advanced modes requires specific training (Tek or rebreather certification) before use, regardless of the device's excellent safety record.

Service and Support

Shearwater's after-sales service is the absolute benchmark in the field of technical diving. The brand has regional support centers around the world, ensuring prompt repair and replacement services for devices, even outside the legal warranty period.

Power Supply

The Teric uses an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery that charges via induction. Wireless charging is particularly convenient for everyday use and eliminates any mechanical manipulation. For extended dive trips, simply bring along the provided USB charging base to keep your battery operational.
