Atomic Aquatics SplitFin Open Heel: Complete review and test (2026).

>-

In the constant pursuit of underwater comfort, where preventing muscle cramps and joint fatigue is a priority to extend dive time, the hydrodynamic profile of the fin blade plays a crucial role. The high-end manufacturer Atomic Aquatics offers with its SplitFin Open Heel an adjustable split-fin fin designed to reduce physical exertion. We will examine its performance in detail.

This detailed evaluation report is based on our documentary analysis conducted on August 6, 2026. Our ranking maintains its neutrality, and no affiliated links are active on our website.

Our Evaluation Method

To analyze the effectiveness of this adjustable split fin, we examine five evaluation criteria with equal weighting. No field tests were conducted by us for this pair. This overall score of 4.20 out of 5 represents its theoretical design quality and does not guarantee individual comfort.

Type and Usage (Score: 4.5 / 5)

The Atomic Aquatics SplitFin Open Heel is a recreational adjustable fin, particularly well-suited for comfortable dives and extended dives. Its open heel design fits perfectly around neoprene boots.

Its lightweight design, at just 750g per fin, makes it easy to use and transport. Its flexible construction makes it the preferred choice for intermediate divers who want to protect their muscles from fatigue.

Sails and Propulsion (P2: 3.5 / 5)

The split sail separates the blade into two distinct flaps that automatically orient themselves during flapping to form an active lifting surface. This design provides a very smooth, scissor-like fluttering motion, but with limited power.

Imagine a cyclist with knee problems who replaces their stiff large chainring with a flexible oval chainring to pedal at a high cadence. By pedaling on the oval, they can climb without joint pain, even if they have to forgo sprinting into the wind. This is the principle behind the SplitFin blade, which divides the blade to transform the stroke into smooth propulsion. The frog kick and back kick, on the other hand, are very ineffective.

Fit and Comfort (Rating: 5/5)

The ergonomic, multi-composite insole perfectly conforms to the shape of the boot without compressing sensitive areas. It stands out as one of the most comfortable models on the underwater market.

The joint fatigue and pressure on the foot are zero, indicating the maximum score for our comfort criterion. This makes it an unparalleled option for people prone to cramps or ankle pain.

Materials and Buoyancy (P4: 4/5)

The assembly combines high-quality, flexible polymers with elastic hinges to allow the flaps to open. The fin has a neutral buoyancy underwater.

These advanced materials from Atomic Aquatics maintain excellent mechanical flexibility even in cold water. Wear at the central slit remains perfectly controlled over seasons of use.

Robustness (P5: 4/5)

The outer ribs are reinforced to protect the split structure from abrasion risks on reefs. The adjustable strap attachments offer excellent durability.

It is important to regularly check for any small debris that may be lodged in the slot when launching from the beach. The mechanical durability of the composite materials remains very impressive.

Who is this award for?

The table below classifies the suitability of the Atomic Aquatics SplitFin Open Heel based on your profile:

Diver ProfileVerdict and Usage Recommendations
Diver prone to crampsIdeal, the split fin design completely relieves pressure on the knees and ankles.
Regular recreational diverExcellent for long, leisurely explorations in calm areas.
Diver who uses the frog kick techniqueTo be avoided, the central split of the fin prevents this technique from being used.
Diver in strong currentsNot recommended, the extreme flexibility of the blade does not allow for forcing passage against the current.

Verdict: Atomic Aquatics SplitFin Open Heel, score 4.20 / 5

The Atomic Aquatics SplitFin open heel fin confirms its status as the adjustable fin that reigns supreme in joint comfort. Its smooth scissor-like propulsion and exceptionally ergonomic boot make it an excellent choice for recreational equipment.
