Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel: complete review and opinion (2026).

>-

In diving clubs along the French and Belgian Atlantic coasts, where 7mm wetsuits and thick booties are standard from September to May, the question of the ideal fin for photographing anemones, nudibranchs, and eels in the green waters of the North Sea is a recurring one. The Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel was designed specifically to meet these demanding conditions. We will analyze it.

This detailed evaluation report is based on our documentary analysis conducted on August 6, 2026. Our ranking system maintains its neutrality, and no affiliated links are active on our website.

Our Evaluation Method

To analyze the performance of this powerful adjustable model in a standardized way, we evaluate it based on five criteria with equal weighting. No field tests were conducted by us for this particular model. This overall score of 4.50 out of 5 makes it one of the highest-rated models in the cold water adjustable category.

Type and Usage (Score: 4.5 / 5)

The Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel is a powerful adjustable fin designed for recreational diving, cold water use, and underwater photography. The relatively heavy weight of approximately 1000g per fin is the price to pay for this power and robustness.

The medium stiffness rating of 3 out of 5 offers a good balance between propulsion power and muscle fatigue during long dives. It is suitable for intermediate to advanced divers who regularly dive in demanding conditions.

Sails and Propulsion (P2: 4.5 / 5)

The Techralene 4X fin with its 4 propulsion channels and non-slip sole offers excellent flutter kick performance, very good frog kick performance, good back kick performance, and good helicopter turn performance. This high level of versatility is the main advantage of the 4X Open Heel.

Imagine a rower switching from a standard flat oar to a streamlined oar with 4 parallel hydrodynamic ridges. Each stroke propels the boat further with the same amount of muscle effort because the channeled profile creates less turbulence. This is the principle behind Mares' 4-Channel design, and the Open Heel version maintains all that power while adding compatibility for cold water and thick booties.

Fit and Comfort (Rating: 5/5)

The adjustable, soft strap combined with the Techralene liner receives the highest rating from the comparator for this criterion, with scores of 5 out of 5 on all comfort indicators. The thermal performance score of 4 out of 5 confirms the model's suitability for cold water conditions.

The muscular fatigue is surprisingly low for a fin of this power, thanks to the well-calibrated medium stiffness. The pressure on the ankle is perfectly managed despite the weight of the sail.

Materials and Buoyancy (P4: 4/5)

The Techralene 4X, reinforced with rubber, performs well under repeated exposure to cold water and salty seawater conditions. Its neutral buoyancy makes it suitable for mixed use in both cold and warm water.

The non-slip rubber sole provides good grip on the wet surfaces of docks and boats. Thoroughly rinsing the anti-slip grooves after each outing in saltwater prevents salt buildup.

Robustness (P5: 4.5 / 5)

The reinforced Techralene 4X blade offers high robustness against the stresses of regular technical diving. The non-slip sole protects the fin during movement on slippery pontoons.

The durability over multiple seasons of intense diving in cold water is one of the recognized strengths of this robust fin. The strap should be checked regularly to prevent wear on the clip attachment points.

Who is this award for?

The table below classifies the suitability of the Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel fin based on your intended use:

Diver ProfileVerdict and Usage Recommendations
Underwater photographer in cold waterExcellent, the stability and power precisely meet these requirements.
Intermediate diver in cold waterVery suitable, the 4 channels and thermal comfort form a winning combination.
Light travelerTo be avoided, the weight of 1000g per fin is a serious disadvantage for luggage.
Beginner in warm waterInsufficient, the power and weight exceed the needs of a beginner in warm water.

Verdict on Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel Fins, score 4.50 / 5

The Mares Avanti 4X Open Heel is considered one of the most powerful and best-suited adjustable fins for cold water diving and underwater photography, according to our comparison. Its exceptional propulsion power and high robustness fully justify its overall rating.

To improve your underwater photography skills in cold water and learn how to accurately position yourself around your subjects, we suggest you take our online AquaExposure training course.
