Mares Avanti Excel: complete review and test (2026).

>-

In coastal waters subject to swells and tidal currents, a diver's propulsion must be stable and powerful to ensure they can return to the boat without exhaustion. The Italian manufacturer Mares offers the Avanti Excel, an adjustable fin featuring a tri-material structure and its proven Channel Thrust technology. We analyze its characteristics objectively to help you make your future choice.

This detailed evaluation report is based on our documentary analysis conducted on August 6, 2026. Our ranking system maintains its neutrality, and no affiliated links are active on our website.

Our Evaluation Method

To rigorously analyze the effectiveness of this composite three-material model, we evaluate the product according to five criteria with equal weighting. No field tests were conducted by us for this particular pair. This overall score of 4.15 out of 5 represents its theoretical design quality and does not guarantee individual comfort.

Type and Usage (Score: 4.5 / 5)

The Mares Avanti Excel is an adjustable fin designed for recreational scuba diving and exploration in cold water. Its open heel design easily accommodates thick neoprene boots.

With a weight of 850g per fin, it's a stable piece of equipment suitable for active diving from the shore. The responsiveness of its blade is perfectly suited to intermediate divers looking for power under their foot.

Sails and Propulsion (P2: 4/5)

The sail incorporates a whale tail shape that flexes to channel the water flow during each stroke. This design allows for an excellent flutter kick motion with powerful propulsion.

Imagine a jazz drummer using drumsticks equipped with a dense felt tip. During fast rhythms, this configuration allows for striking with velocity while also dampening the returning vibrations to protect the wrists. This is the principle of tri-material technology combined with the OBP (Open Buckle Power) system to optimize energy transmission. The frog kick and back kick styles remain very effective underwater.

Fit and Comfort (Score: 4.5 / 5)

The ergonomic, soft-touch elastomer liner conforms to the boot without creating friction or pressure points. The quick-release buckles make it easy to adjust the strap.

Muscle fatigue remains well-controlled during prolonged dives thanks to the blade angle. The overall comfort of the fit is very good for an adjustable fin in this category.

Materials and Buoyancy (P4: 3.75 / 5)

The design combines flexible Techralene material for the blade and elastomers of varying densities for the foot pocket. The fin has a neutral buoyancy underwater to maintain balance.

These high-quality composite components are perfectly resistant to the corrosive effects of seawater and sunlight. The sail maintains its elasticity and mechanical responsiveness over many seasons of use.

Robustness (P5: 4/5)

The thick side rails effectively protect the sail from scratches on coral or rocks. The tightening buckles on the adjustable strap are very sturdy.

The non-slip sole provides excellent grip on wet rocks and slippery boat ladders. The durability of this three-material model is widely confirmed by user feedback.

Who is this award for?

The table below classifies the suitability of the Mares Avanti Excel based on your usage profile:

Diver ProfileVerdict and Usage Recommendations
Intermediate DiverExcellent, the push performance and tri-material responsiveness are ideal.
Cold Water DiverVery suitable, the adjustable boot accommodates thick booties perfectly.
Leisure TravelerAcceptable, but the weight of 850g per fin requires you to monitor the weight of your luggage.
Complete BeginnerAverage, the stiffness of the blade requires a level of kicking technique already mastered.

Verdict: Mares Avanti Excel, score 4.15 / 5

The Mares Avanti Excel stands out as a high-performance, adjustable, three-material fin designed for active recreational diving. Its powerful thrust and comfortable boot make it an excellent investment.
