Mares Avanti Superchannel Open Heel: complete review and test (2026).

>-

In the changing rooms of diving centers along the Breton and Atlantic coasts of France, where thick wetsuits and 5mm boots are standard for much of the year, an adjustable fin that can adapt to different shoe sizes depending on the neoprene thickness is a significant comfort improvement. Mares offers its adjustable version of the Channel Thrust range with the Avanti Superchannel Open Heel. We'll take a closer look at it.

This detailed evaluation report is based on our documentary analysis conducted on August 6, 2026. Our ranking system maintains its neutrality, and no affiliated links are active on our website.

Our Evaluation Method

To analyze the performance of this adjustable recreational diving fin in a standardized manner, we evaluate it based on five criteria with equal weighting. No field tests were conducted by us for this pair. This overall score of 3.85 out of 5 reflects its theoretical design quality and does not guarantee individual comfort.

Type and Usage (P1: 4/5)

The Mares Avanti Superchannel Open Heel is a versatile adjustable fin designed for recreational diving and active snorkeling, aimed at beginner divers who want more thermal versatility than a bootie-style fin. It covers a wide range of uses.

The lightweight design, at approximately 750g per fin, is very reasonable for an adjustable model. The standard silicone strap allows for quick adjustments, even when wearing thin gloves.

Sails and Propulsion (P2: 3.5 / 5)

The Techralene three-channel "Channel Thrust" fin provides a very good flutter kick for a lightweight, adjustable fin. The efficiency of the channels is noticeable during regular kicking while recreational diving.

Imagine a driver replacing their standard tires with grooved tires optimized for water drainage at an angle. On dry roads, the difference is minimal. On wet roads, the grip is significantly better. It's the same idea in water, where the three channels guide the flow in a more directional way. The frog kick is mediocre, and the modified frog kick is also mediocre.

Fit and Comfort (Rating: 4.25 out of 5)

The adjustable silicone strap allows for precise fitting with or without booties. The thermal comfort rating is 3 out of 5 in cold water, which is significantly better than a simple wading shoe due to the possibility of wearing insulated booties.

Muscle fatigue is excellent during regular recreational diving finning. The resistance to fatigue and pressure on the ankle are well managed by the flexibility of the blade.

Materials and Buoyancy (P4: 3.75 / 5)

Techralene material is resistant to seasonal exposure to salt and ultraviolet radiation. Its neutral buoyancy makes it suitable for use in both surface waters and moderate depths for recreational activities.

The silicone strap is resistant to repeated twisting caused by frequent putting on and taking off of shoes. Regularly rinsing the area around the strap will prolong the lifespan of the elastic.

Robustness (P5: 3.75 / 5)

The blade made of Techralene material withstands the stresses of regular recreational diving well. It tolerates light contact with rocky seabeds better than a simple polypropylene blade.

The durability is good for several seasons of regular use. The main point to watch out for is the strap and its clipping system, which should be inspected before each dive.

Who is this award for?

The table below classifies the suitability of the Mares Avanti Superchannel Open Heel fin based on your usage profile:

Diver ProfileVerdict and Usage Recommendations
Beginner recreational diverExcellent, the Channel Thrust propulsion is sufficient, and the adjustable design makes it easier to put on equipment.
Cold water divingGood, the adjustable strap allows use with 3-5 mm insulating booties.
Active snorkelerAverage, the adjustable design is less practical than a dedicated snorkeling bootie.
Technical divingInsufficient, the flexibility of the fin blade does not meet technical requirements.

Verdict on Mares Avanti Superchannel Open Heel Fins, score 3.85 / 5

The Mares Avanti Superchannel Open Heel fins are a versatile and well-balanced adjustable fin, suitable for beginner recreational diving in warm and temperate waters. Its Channel Thrust technology and relatively light weight justify its overall rating.
