Poseidon launches an online regulator configurator: how to use it effectively before making a purchase.

Poseidon launches an online regulator configurator: how to use it effectively before you buy.

I've been hearing the same question repeatedly in training sessions: How do you choose a regulator without relying solely on the technical specifications or the sales pitch of the salesperson at the time? This week, one manufacturer actually changed part of the answer.

Poseidon Diving Systems, the Swedish brand known for its Xstream and Cyklon regulators, has just launched what it claims is the first online regulator configurator in the industry. The tool allows users to choose their first stage, second stage, and finishes, then visualize the complete assembled unit in a 360-degree 3D view before placing an order.

What this configurator truly changes.

Until now, buying a regulator meant comparing static datasheets or relying on the advice of a salesperson who was rushed on a Saturday afternoon. The configurator reverses this logic. You start with the components, virtually assemble them, and see the result before committing to anything.

Underwater photography has undergone the same shift with housing manufacturers for certain brands. Now, diving equipment is following this trend.

Specifically, once your configuration is complete, you can download a summary PDF to take to a reseller for a final opinion, or order directly online with home delivery or pickup at a Poseidon store.

What a configurator can never replace.

Seeing a regulator in 3D doesn't tell you anything about its EN250 compliance once assembled, the recommended maintenance frequency, or the density of the network of certified technicians near your location. These are criteria that are invisible on a screen, and yet they are crucial when your regulator needs maintenance or repair.

In the evaluation grid that AquaExposure uses to assess regulators, the "maintenance and compliance" pillar carries as much weight as the performance of the first stage. A configurator that allows you to assemble components without reminding you of this reality may show a nice result, but it doesn't represent a complete purchasing decision.

Our regulator comparison tool and this new feature.

We are currently working on a regulator comparison tool, using the same principle as our guide for changing the battery in your dive computer. A configurator like the one from Poseidon changes part of our work on this project.

Previously, comparing regulators meant comparing finished models, fixed by the manufacturer. With a configurator, the question becomes different. You need to evaluate a combination of parts, not just a catalog model. Our grid will therefore have to specify, for each possible configuration, whether the assembly remains within the limits of the original EN250 certification, which is not guaranteed as soon as you mix and match parts.

This is exactly the kind of detail that a configurator will never spontaneously tell you, and that our comparator, once released, will seek to make visible.

Available from us?

Poseidon is not an obscure brand in France. You can find it at several specialized retailers, with Xstream and Cyklon regulators already well-established in the technical and military sectors. So, there's nothing particularly exotic about the brand itself.

The configurator works equally well for Europe and the United States, including home delivery. A small bonus: shipping is free for purchases over €200. This threshold is quickly reached when talking about high-end regulators.

A good tool deserves to be used for what it does well. This one helps you visualize. Ultimately, the final choice will continue to be made based on criteria that never change, with safety being paramount.
