Important: A mask's watertight seal depends entirely on your facial shape. A high score never replaces a physical test (without strap) in a shop or pool before buying.

Why and How to Use This Dive Mask Comparator

During my first years as a dive instructor, I saw dozens of students ruin their first dives because of a poorly fitting mask skirt that constantly leaked water. It is one of the most personal pieces of equipment and yet the most poorly chosen.

A good mask must provide two fundamental qualities : a perfect watertight seal and a clear field of view. I built this tool to list the actual specs of 28 models on the market, without advertising bias.

You can filter the masks according to your specific needs. Freedivers will look for models with a very low internal volume to minimize equalization effort. Photographers will prioritize ultra-clear lenses without chromatic distortion.

Our evaluation protocol is based on seven analysis criteria from the M1-M7 grid. We measure strap ergonomics, silicone skirt softness, and buckle usability with thick 5mm gloves.

Never overlook initial maintenance. A new mask has a greasy manufacturing residue that will inevitably cause fogging during your first dive. A thorough scrub of the lenses with white toothpaste or a quick burn with a lighter flame will solve this problem for good.

Frequently asked questions

Which dive mask should I choose as a beginner?+

For beginners, a recreational mask made of soft clear or black silicone with a standard internal volume is ideal (like the Cressi F1 or Scubapro Spectra). The key is to test the seal on your face before buying.

Should I choose a single-lens or dual-lens mask?+

A single-lens mask offers an uninterrupted panoramic field of view in the center. A dual-lens mask usually has a smaller internal volume and allows the installation of optical prescription lenses to correct vision.

Are mirrored or tinted lenses recommended?+

Mirrored lenses protect against surface glare, but they block eye contact with fish or your buddy. In underwater photography or scuba instruction, they are not recommended for this reason.

How do I prevent a new dive mask from fogging?+

A new mask has a thin film of manufacturing silicone on the lenses. Rub the inner lenses with white toothpaste (non-gel) or quickly burn the film off with a lighter flame, then use saliva or anti-fog spray before diving.
