The short answer

Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max can go underwater. Apple rates it IP68, 6 metres for 30 minutes, and we would still advise against it.

That number certifies survival after an accident. It is measured in still fresh water, on a device fresh from the box, with no current, no salt and no thermal shock. A dive supplies all four. Add a year of ageing seals and a descent into 16-degree water and the test conditions are long gone.

And there is the detail the spec sheet leaves out: a bare screen stops responding under the surface. No focus, no exposure, no shutter. The phone survives the dive and you surface with an empty roll, which is a peculiar kind of waterproof.

The answer is always the same. Put it in a housing. The Divevolk SeaTouch 4 Max Plus sits around €250. It is not the €10 pouch from the airport shop and it is not pretending to be. The iPhone 17 Pro Max features three lenses, all at 48 megapixels. Underwater, the most useful lens depends on what you are shooting. For medium-sized subjects at close distance, you will mostly use the main sensor (24 mm, f/1.78). For macro, the ultra-wide lens becomes the gateway with a 2-centimeter minimum focus distance.

For the first time on a smartphone, ProRes RAW video is available natively. This format captures the sensor's raw data before any color profile is applied. When diving, this means you can correct white balance non-destructively in post-production, just like you would with a RAW photo.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is available with up to 2 TB of internal storage. This is new, and it is significant. A 3-dive day shooting ProRAW photos + a few ProRes HD clips requires roughly 15 to 40 GB depending on settings. With 512 GB or more, you have plenty of margin.

No external card slot is the only drawback on this criterion.

The USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connector (10 Gbps nominal, ~500-800 MB/s real-world transfer to an external SSD) allows you to offload the iPhone to a portable SSD between dives on the boat. A USB-C cable and a 500 GB SSD are all you need. The workflow is seamless and does not require a computer.

B4 - Thermals: The Critical Point of This Review

Score: 2.8/5

This is the only real drawback of this test, and it needs to be addressed clearly before any purchase.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max returns to an aluminium chassis, after the titanium of the iPhone 16 Pro. Aluminium conducts heat 20 times better than titanium. Combined with the internal vapor chamber that optimizes surface heat dissipation, this delivers excellent heat management under normal usage.

Underwater, this becomes the opposite problem. When the iPhone goes from 20°C ambient air to 12°C water, the high conductivity of the aluminium rapidly transfers the cold to the air trapped inside the housing. This cooled air condenses on the inner surfaces, particularly the front glass port.

In warm tropical water (above 25°C), the temperature differential is low, and the risk is minimal. In cold water (Atlantic, Mediterranean in winter, mountain lakes), this risk is real and well-documented on previous generations of aluminium iPhones.

Real-world Workflow: A 3-Dive Day

With a 512 GB iPhone 17 Pro Max, a day of 3 dives of 45 minutes shooting ProRAW photos (about 25 MB per photo) represents roughly 15 to 30 GB depending on how much you shoot. You will easily last the day with comfortable headroom.

For ProRes RAW video, data rates are higher. A 500 GB USB-C SSD connected via OTG between dives (using a short cable in the gear bag) offloads files in just a few minutes.

Model-Specific Watch Points

The return to aluminium after the titanium of the iPhone 16 Pro is the only real downgrade for diving. In cold water (under 15°C / 59°F), the risk of internal condensation is real. This number hides two different realities depending on where you dive. In tropical water, or the Mediterranean between June and September, this iPhone is probably the best smartphone setup available today. ProRes RAW video alone justifies the purchase. Combined with the LiDAR, 2 cm macro, and the Divevolk SeaTouch at 60 meters, it is a complete, lightweight system.

In cold water, under 15°C (59°F), aluminium thermals become the first subject to address before buying. Not a dealbreaker if you take precautions, but essential to know.

If you are coming from an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the real novelty is ProRes RAW video. For a new purchase, it is currently the most capable smartphone for diving photography. For those who dive primarily in cold water and insist on a titanium chassis, a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max remains a serious option to consider.
