Mares Quad 2 Test: The large-screen dive computer and Trimix functionality.

Mares Quad 2 review: segmented screen, Bühlmann algorithm, 5 gas Trimix, native Bluetooth. Read the AquaExposure verdict!

To learn how to get the most out of your gear underwater, discover the AquaExposure Training.

Introduction

Watching a diver struggle to navigate the cramped menus of their dive computer while at depth, during a safety stop, wearing waterproof gloves is a common sight on boats. A dive computer isn't just a timer, it's the vital interface that ensures your decompression safety every moment. With the Mares Quad 2, the Italian manufacturer has decided to modernize its most popular large-screen model from the decade. The goal? To maintain the massive readability of the original rectangular display, while replacing its old engine with a customizable Bühlmann algorithm that handles Trimix, and finally adding native Bluetooth connectivity. This review assesses whether this hardware overhaul justifies choosing a monochrome screen with high contrast over more expensive color displays.

The Verdict in Summary

Overall score: 4.0/5

CriterionScoreWhat it means

Price & customer service4.5/5Exceptional value for money to get Trimix on such a large screen, supported by Mares' customer service.

Detailed Analysis

Algorithm and Milestones (O1)

The Quad 2 abandons the old "black box" design of the RGBM model, offering you complete control over your decompression calculations – a major evolution for the range. The device features the renowned Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with Gradient Factors that are fully adjustable by the user. The dive planner manages the Time To Surface (TTS) to ensure a safe approach to decompression stops. The computer triggers visual and audible alarms in case of anomalies or excessively rapid ascent.

Air and Mixed Gases (O2)

It is now capable of tracking the diver very far during technical dives in open-circuit systems, making changes between tanks extremely smooth. It manages up to 5 distinct gas mixtures, including Nitrox (21% to 99% O2) and Trimix (hypoxic and normoxic). However, it does not have any native modes for rebreathers (CCR) and does not support wireless air management.

Screen and Ergonomics (O3)

The standout feature of this case is its XXL format, which never strains the eyes underwater, even in conditions of very low visibility. The monochrome display uses a segmented "Chip-On-Glass" technology that provides very large characters. Operation is easy thanks to four large buttons located at the corners of the case, perfectly suited for use with waterproof gloves.

Battery Life and Power Source (O4)

The "old-fashioned" LCD screen consumes very little power, which avoids the need to find a USB port on a boat between dives. The computer runs on a CR2450 lithium battery that the user can replace themselves. The advertised battery life is 100 hours of dive time (which is a whole diving season or about a hundred trips in the water).

Connectivity and App (O5)

The days of USB sticks sold separately are over, the computer finally adapts to modern comfort standards. The Bluetooth module is integrated from the factory, allowing direct synchronization of the dive log with the Mares app on your smartphone. The internal memory stores 100 hours of profiles with precise sampling every 5 seconds.

Compass and Instruments (O6)

Digital navigation is not included, as the budget was allocated to mathematical computing power. The computer does not have a compass. However, it does include a standard depth gauge (bottom timer) with a resettable average depth display and a stopwatch.

Robustness and Depth (O7)

This massive rectangular casing is designed to withstand years of rough handling on yachts and boat decks. It is certified for a maximum display depth of 150 meters (492 feet), and automatically compensates for atmospheric pressure (altitude) every 20 seconds.

Price and Customer Support (O8)

Offering it at around €300 upon launch, combining the management of 5 Trimix gases with Bluetooth on a large screen is a strategic move. Mares' logistics network guarantees easy access to spare parts. Regarding Mares' after-sales service, opinions are mixed. Some users report exchanges taking place in 8 days, while others mention delays or inflexibility regarding shipping costs. Your experience will largely depend on the quality and responsiveness of your local dealer, who acts as a crucial intermediary between you and the after-sales service.

Who is this computer for?

This computer is designed for recreational or open-circuit technical divers who prioritize maximum readability at an affordable price, with a completely transparent algorithm. Its internal mechanics are actually designed to support divers through advanced technical training programs (Trimix and multi-block), despite its simple appearance. It's not ideal for those seeking a state-of-the-art color screen or who absolutely want to display their tank pressure on their wrist. Users of rebreathers (CCR) should also consider a dedicated range of products.

Customer Service and Support

The after-sales service of Mares receives mixed feedback. Some customers report quick exchanges, sometimes in less than eight days, while others experience delays or inflexibility regarding shipping costs. The quality of the experience will depend heavily on your local dealer, who plays a crucial role in handling requests. Therefore, it is very, very, very important to choose a responsive and engaged dealer for any questions related to the support or warranty of your Mares Quad 2.

Nutrition

The Mares Quad 2 computer operates with a replaceable CR2450 lithium battery. This feature is a significant advantage, especially for cruises where access to an electrical outlet to recharge a battery may be uncertain. The advertised battery life of 100 hours of dive time allows you to plan a full diving season without worry. However, it's wise to have some spare batteries on hand, especially before a long trip, to avoid any unexpected interruptions to your dives.
