Mares XR Reel / 120MT Reel: Review, Features, and Scuba Diving Opinions (2026)

Beneath rocky ceilings, hundreds of meters from the entrance of a submerged spring, or within the depths of a sunken wreck, the lifeline is not just an accessory- it is the only physical connection to survival. In this environment with zero visibility, where even the smallest particle stirred up by your fins can obscure all visual references, the primary exploration reel must offer a generous amount of line, absolute mechanical robustness, and flawless operation. The Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT was developed for these extreme conditions.

The Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT belongs to the family of technical primary reels (120 meters), designed for cave exploration, as a primary lifeline, and for deep dives. Its mechanical design prioritizes the reliability of its components and ease of use underwater.

Its machined construction allows for smooth operation even with thick waterproof gloves or neoprene. The spacing of the spools and the line guide have been designed to minimize the risk of the line derailing during rapid deployment.

The integrated line offers a usable length of 120 meters. The high-strength braided line provides excellent resistance to abrasion on rock and oxidized metal.Visually, the contrasting color of the line makes it easier to spot in waters with a lot of particles or during twilight decompression stops. The end of the line has a reinforced termination for a secure attachment.

Equipped with a top handle or a robust Goodman handle, the Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT allows for a balanced grip without tiring the forearm during long periods of finning. The oversized winding handle makes it easier to reel in tens of meters of line under tension.

In high-altitude mountaineering, every anchor point on the rock face is inspected with absolute rigor. In cave diving, the primary reel is the backbone of the expedition: every meter of line deployed must be traceable by touch alone.

The Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT is manufactured using top-quality marine materials designed to withstand the corrosive effects of salt, hydrocarbons, and UV radiation. The frame can withstand impacts against the boat hull or rocky walls without damage.

Precise machining of the surfaces eliminates any extraneous axial play, ensuring smooth and consistent rotation over time.

Peripheral anchor points allow you to securely lock the line in place with a double-ender carabiner to prevent any accidental unwinding in the thigh pocket.

The price of the Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT reflects its construction quality and mechanical robustness. It is a piece of equipment designed to last for years of intensive diving without weakening, provided it is simply rinsed with fresh water after each dive.

The Mares XR Reel / Reel 120MT establishes itself as a solid and effective reference in its category. Whether you are looking for a reliable signaling tool for drift dives or a navigation reel for your advanced dives, it provides a clear and proven technical solution.
