OMS Smart Reel: Review, Features, and Scuba Diving Opinions (2026)

The OMS Smart Reel belongs to the family of mechanical reel guidance systems (available in 250 feet and 400 feet versions, approximately 76 meters and 122 meters respectively), designed for guided navigation on wrecks, performing "jumps," and managing deep stops. Its mechanical design prioritizes component reliability and ease of use underwater.

Its machined construction allows for smooth operation even with thick waterproof gloves or neoprene. The spacing of the spools and the line guide have been designed to minimize the risk of derailment during rapid deployment.

The integrated line offers a usable length of 250 feet and 400 feet, depending on the manufacturer, which is approximately 76 meters and 122 meters. The high-strength braided line offers excellent resistance to abrasion on rock and oxidized metal.Visually, the contrasting color of the line makes it easier to spot in waters with a lot of particles or during twilight decompression stops. The end of the line has a reinforced termination for a secure attachment.

The ergonomic handle provides a firm grip, even when wearing rigid waterproof gloves. The locking mechanism or release trigger is naturally positioned under the index finger or thumb, allowing you to adjust the tension with one hand while maintaining a horizontal orientation.

Think of a high-precision heavy-duty fishing reel: when the fish pulls suddenly, the multi-disc drag absorbs the force without destructive jerks. In a mechanical reel like the OMS Smart Reel, the friction wheel plays this role of regulator, allowing you to tension the line without ever risking a sudden lock-up.

The OMS Smart Reel is made with top-quality marine materials designed to withstand the corrosive effects of salt, hydrocarbons, and UV radiation. The frame can withstand impacts against the boat hull or rocky walls without damage.

The precise machining of the surfaces eliminates any parasitic axial play, ensuring smooth and consistent rotation over time.

The peripheral anchor points allow you to securely lock the line in place with a double-ender carabiner, preventing any accidental unwinding in the thigh pocket.

The price of the OMS Smart Reel reflects its construction quality and mechanical robustness. It is a piece of equipment designed to last for years of intensive diving without failure, provided it is simply rinsed with fresh water after each dive.
