In the world of scuba diving, observing a group of divers on a deep drop-off reveals a lot about the ergonomics of the equipment. Divers often squint at small monochrome screens when the light fades or the water becomes filled with particles.
However, a dive computer is not just a backlit timer. It's the fundamental tool that manages decompression safety for every dive.
Following the success of its classic Quad range, the Italian manufacturer has updated its flagship model with the Mares Quad Ci. Featuring a color MIP display and a completely open desaturation algorithm, this model promises exceptional readability and a clear technical evolution towards Trimix.
This test aims to determine whether this colorized version justifies the investment and whether the four-button ergonomics remain as intuitive in real-world use.

**This computer is designed for:** Recreational or technical divers using open-circuit systems who are looking for a very large screen for maximum readability without compromising on their algorithm settings. This computer is not ideal for: Those who prefer a discreet watch format to wear daily, or those who dive exclusively with rebreathers (CCR).
The computer entrusts the management of your saturation levels to one of the most transparent models on the market. It allows you to configure your safety margins exactly as you have learned.
The Quad Ci uses the Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with fully customizable Gradient Factors (GF). The decompression planning display is comprehensive, featuring a continuous ceiling and color coding of tissue saturation for immediate readability.
Whether you are doing simple air dives or accelerated decompression using pure Nitrox, the transition from one gas to another is very visually apparent underwater.
The system manages up to 5 mixes. It includes Nitrox with oxygen levels from 21% to 99% and supports full Trimix (both normoxic and hypoxic). However, it does not have native, certified support for rebreathers (CCR), focusing instead on open-circuit systems.
This is a major strength of this model. Its generous size and the integration of color completely transform the experience compared to older LCD screens in the range.
The screen is a MIP (Memory In Pixel) type with high resolution, displaying 8 colors. Navigation relies on 4 robust buttons located at the corners of the casing, which greatly facilitates operation, even when wearing thick, waterproof gloves.
Unlike previous generations, you will no longer need to have your battery replaced. The computer recharges via a cable, which is very convenient for everyday use, although you do need to remember to plug it in before leaving.
The device is powered by a LiPo battery that provides 30 hours of operating time in dive mode. However, if you activate the connection with a wireless pressure transmitter, this battery life drops to approximately 20 hours. Charging is done via a USB clip designed to withstand 500 charge cycles.
The dive log is now filled in a modern way. No need for an expensive optional interface cable, the computer natively connects to your smartphone.
Bluetooth is integrated directly. The Mares app allows you to quickly download your dive logs, view the tissue saturation curve for each dive, and perform system software updates.
Underwater navigation is made easier by a very user-friendly digital tool, which is directly displayed in the middle of your critical diving data.
The digital compass is fully featured with heading memory and a timer. It also has a depth gauge mode with resettable average depth, which is classic and effective for technical diving.
Designed for deep dives, the rectangular enclosure is made of reinforced plastics that are particularly resistant to crushing. The Quad Ci is certified for an operating depth of 150 meters, guaranteeing excellent structural integrity.
One of the manufacturer's key strengths is its logistical presence in Europe. With its open algorithm, color display, and readability, it offers one of the best value-for-money ratios on the market for this format. The Mares network guarantees extremely fast access to spare parts and after-sales service.
**Certification Level:** Very readable and accessible from Level 1, but the device is actually calibrated for experienced divers or technical courses thanks to its Trimix options and open Gradient Factors. Field Workflow: Excellent readability on a boat. As with any battery-powered device, remember to bring its specific USB charging clip on your trips, otherwise you may find yourself without power. **Air Integration Alert:** The Quad Ci can pair with up to 5 wireless probes. Note that activating this function reduces the battery life from 30 hours to 20 hours. Air integration simplifies reading, but it never replaces the redundancy of a traditional mechanical pressure gauge. Scalability: No hardware limitations if you switch to open multi-block configuration. The lack of a native CCR mode is its only limiting factor if using a rebreather is your goal.
Safety is paramount over the score. A dive computer is a decision-making aid, never a guarantee. Even with a customizable algorithm, a high score does not excuse proper training, redundant backup equipment for dives, and adherence to learned procedures.
If you are using the air integration system, it is absolutely essential to have a backup pressure gauge or a redundant regulator due to the risk of signal loss and the increased battery consumption caused by the transmitter.
Advanced functions require specific and rigorous training before use. Never modify your Gradient Factors without a thorough understanding of the theory of tissue desaturation.
The Mares Quad Ci represents the update that all lovers of large screens were waiting for. By switching to a Bühlmann algorithm and adopting a color MIP display panel, Mares transforms a pleasant recreational computer into a machine capable of accompanying a diver towards the realms of advanced trimix diving, all at a very competitive price.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for flawless readability, regardless of the water's turbidity. Only divers seeking the elegance of an everyday watch would opt for a different design, but for those who want to calmly read their dive times, this is a top-notch tool.
What is the difference between the Mares Quad and the Quad Ci? The Quad Ci features a high-resolution color display (MIP 8 colors) and a Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with customizable gradient factors, compared to the classic segmented LCD screen for the original model.
Does the Mares Quad Ci manage multiple gases? Yes, it can manage up to 5 gases simultaneously, including Nitrox (21-99%) and Trimix (both normoxic and hypoxic).
Can the battery be changed by the user? No, the Quad Ci abandons the replaceable battery in favor of a rechargeable LiPo battery that can be charged via a cable and a USB clip, offering up to 30 hours of battery life during dives.
Does the Mares Quad Ci have a compass? Yes, it features a full-range (3D) digital compass with heading memory and a timer for navigation.
