This is a question that frequently arises among divers who travel extensively: how to combine the power of a technical dive computer with a discreet form factor suitable for everyday wear, both in the office and on a cruise ship? A dive computer remains primarily a vital safety instrument, and miniaturizing this tool often necessitates significant compromises in readability or functionality.
With the Teric, Canadian manufacturer Shearwater has managed to integrate all of its technical expertise into a compact case the size of a watch. Bright AMOLED screen, complete Trimix management, and a transparent algorithm: this review aims to determine whether the ergonomics of a small screen can match the readability of the brand's larger models.
Overall score: 4.7/5
| Criterion | Score | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Algorithm & decompression levels | 5.0/5 | Transparent Bühlmann ZHL-16C model with free Gradient Factors. |
| Air & multi-gas | 5.0/5 | Management of 5 OC gases and 5 CC gases, complete Trimix support, and CCR mode. |
| Screen & ergonomics | 4.8/5 | High-contrast circular AMOLED screen and 4-button navigation. |
| Battery life | 4.0/5 | Li-ion battery offering 30 hours of dive time with wireless charging. |

| Compass & instruments | 4.5/5 | Compensated 3D electronic compass and complete freediving mode. |
| Robustness & depth rating | 4.8/5 | Certified to 200m with scratch-resistant sapphire glass and steel buttons. |
| Price & customer service | 4.2/5 | Significant investment, but supported by the best customer service in the market. |
**This computer is designed for:** Demanding technical or recreational divers who want all the advanced decompression features in a stylish and ultra-readable watch format. This computer is not ideal for: Divers on a tight budget, or those who prefer a very large rectangular screen to display all data without scrolling through pages.
The Teric features the same processing engine as its larger counterparts. This is a major strength: no functions have been disabled simply because the device is smaller. The audible and vibration alerts are very effective at attracting your attention.
The algorithm is based on the Bühlmann ZHL-16C model with adjustable Gradient Factors. The decompression display is clear, and the Time To Surface (TTS) is always accessible. Shearwater also allows users to purchase a unlock key to install the alternative bubble model VPM-B for traditional technical divers.
This model literally handles everything that can be breathed underwater in an open-circuit system.
The Teric can manage 5 open-circuit gases and 5 closed-circuit gases. It allows for full trimix diving and integrates a bailout mode for rebreathers with fixed PPO2.
This is the main advantage of this model. Despite its classic watch face design, the vibrant colors and infinite contrast of the deep blacks make it readable even in the thickest fog.
The circular screen is a 1.39-inch (3.53 cm) color AMOLED panel with a resolution of 400x400. The four stainless steel 316 buttons are well-defined, but logically require a bit more dexterity when wearing thick waterproof gloves than a Perdix would.
The choice of an internal battery changes the diver's routine: you have to remember to charge your watch, just like you charge your phone.
The internal Li-ion battery (1.9 Wh) provides up to 30 hours of battery life in dive mode and 50 hours in classic watch mode. It recharges simply by placing the case on its small wireless charging station, which is included. Note that the battery can only be replaced at the factory.
The built-in Bluetooth Smart connectivity allows you to instantly synchronize your dive log with the Shearwater Cloud application. The application is available on both mobile devices and desktop computers for detailed analysis of your decompression profiles.
The Teric incorporates a 3D digital compass with full inclination compensation. Its responsiveness underwater is remarkable and allows for very precise underwater navigation in all positions.
Designed for durability, the case combines a stainless steel bezel and buttons with a body made of high-performance polymer. The bezel effectively protects the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal from all impacts against rocks or metal on wrecks.
The Teric is positioned in the premium segment, with a price typically around €1150. This high price is offset by an after-sales service that is exceptionally efficient and globally recognized for its responsiveness.
Alert: Usage Tek and Recycler
The Teric targets a wide audience, from recreational divers to highly technical divers, with features for Trimix and CC/BO (closed-circuit diving with fixed PPO2). We remind users that the use of these advanced modes requires specific training (Tek or rebreather certification) before any use, regardless of the device's excellent safety record.
Shearwater's after-sales service is the absolute benchmark in the field of technical diving. The brand has regional support centers around the world, ensuring prompt repair and replacement services for equipment, even outside the legal warranty period.
The Teric uses an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery that is charged inductively. Wireless charging is particularly convenient for everyday use and eliminates any mechanical manipulation. For longer dives, simply bring the provided USB charging base to keep your battery operational.
