Detailed Analysis
M1 Volume and Field of View
The first evaluation section examines the structural compactness and optical optimization of the field of view. The Beuchat Maxlux S is characterized by a single-lens design without a frame, commonly called frameless, which brings the lens closer to the eyes to reduce dead space. The documented internal volume is exactly 127 cm3, a low value that limits equalization effort during freediving or deep scuba dives [1]. The frame design provides the model with an extended panoramic field of view, particularly oriented upwards, facilitating instrument reading and monitoring of the aquatic environment.Criteria: Documented internal volume of 127 cm3 (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Frameless design without a metal ring (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Panoramic field of view towards the top (Score: 4.5/5)
M2 Mask Skirt and Fit
The analysis of the mask skirt and facial fit is a crucial part of the overall evaluation. The Beuchat Maxlux S incorporates an hypoallergenic silicone skirt with a nominal width documented at 120 mm, a dimension calculated to adapt to a wide variety of face shapes [1]. The flexibility of the material and the thinness of the support edges help distribute the mechanical stresses exerted by hydrostatic pressure evenly. However, no numerical score can predict absolute watertightness on a specific face, as each diver's bone structure remains the decisive factor in the seal between the skin and the silicone [1] [2].
Criteria: Hypoallergenic silicone skirt (Score: 4.3/5) Criteria: Nominal skirt width of 120 mm (Score: 4.3/5) Criteria: Individual watertightness based on facial morphology (Score: 4.3/5)
M3 Lenses and CommunicationThe third section focuses on the type of lenses and light transmission. The Beuchat Maxlux S uses high-security tempered glass lenses that comply with the European standard EN 16804 [1]. The standard version features clear lenses, ensuring optimal transmission of natural light for accurate color perception underwater. Documentation also mentions versions with colored or tinted lenses, as well as a wide range of 19 frame colors [1]. It is important to note that there is no documented information regarding any specific anti-reflective treatment or original optical correction, which may be relevant for divers with visual impairments.
Criteria: Tempered glass lenses compliant with the EN 16804 standard (Score: 4.0/5) Criteria: Standard version with clear lenses and colored variants available (Score: 4.0/5) Criteria: Absence of documented original corrective lenses (Score: 4.0/5)
M4 Anti-fog and MaintenanceThe management of fogging and maintenance recommendations constitute the fourth section of the evaluation criteria. The technical specifications provided by the manufacturer do not mention the presence of a permanent anti-fog treatment applied at the factory to the lenses of the Beuchat Maxlux S [1] [2]. Therefore, the user must perform a thorough initial cleaning of the new lenses to remove any residual grease from the manufacturing process that can cause condensation [1]. Regular maintenance involves rinsing thoroughly with fresh water after each dive and storing them away from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays [1].
Criteria: Absence of permanent anti-fog treatment applied at the factory (Score: 3.5/5) Criteria: Requirement for initial degreasing of new lenses (Score: 3.5/5) Criteria: Regular maintenance with fresh water required (Score: 3.5/5)
M5 Strap and ErgonomicsThe overall ergonomics and retention system are the focus of the fifth analysis section. The Beuchat Maxlux S is equipped with micro-adjustment buckles that are directly molded onto the silicone skirt of the mask [1]. This technical integration eliminates rigid plastic intermediate parts, improving the overall hydrodynamics and allowing for quick, smooth, and precise strap adjustment, even when the diver is wearing thick gloves [1] [2]. The flat silicone strap ensures a uniform distribution of tension on the occiput, limiting the risk of slippage during exertion [1].
Criteria: Micro-adjustment buckles molded onto the skirt (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Quick adjustment and easy handling (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Silicone strap with uniform distribution (Score: 4.5/5)
M6 robustness and accessoriesThe structural integrity and materials used in the equipment are assessed in the sixth section. Thanks to its frameless single-lens design, the Beuchat Maxlux S offers increased resistance to impacts and accidental twisting, eliminating mechanical weak points inherent in complex assemblies [1] [2]. Certification according to the EN 16804 standard confirms that the model meets the safety requirements applicable to diving masks [1]. The original packaging typically includes a rigid protective box designed to preserve the integrity of the skirt and lenses during transport [1] [2].
Criteria: Robust design resistant to impacts (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: EN 16804 compliance certification (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Supplied with a rigid protective box (Score: 4.5/5)
M7 Price and AvailabilityThe final section analyzes the economic positioning and commercial distribution of the model in the market. The Beuchat Maxlux S benefits from a competitive price point within the recreational mask category, supported by wide availability through specialized distribution networks and online retailers [1] [2]. The balance between optical performance, internal volume, and acquisition cost positions this model as a rational choice for both beginner and experienced divers [1] [2]. However, prices are subject to market fluctuations and distributor conditions as of August 18, 2026 [1] [2].
Criteria: Competitive price positioning in the recreational sector (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Wide availability through retailers (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Consistency with the target economic segment (Score: 4.5/5)
What you need to know before buyingA careful review of the documentation for the Beuchat Maxlux S reveals several important points that should be considered before making a purchase [1] [2]. The stated skirt width of 120 mm is an approximate measurement and does not guarantee a universal fit for all facial shapes [1]. Divers with particularly narrow or wide faces will need to verify the contact geometry before finalizing their purchase [1] [2]. The absence of permanent anti-fog treatment from the factory requires the user to thoroughly clean the lenses immediately upon opening the packaging [1]. This preliminary cleaning is essential to remove any chemical residues from the manufacturing process that can promote condensation during initial dives [1]. It is also important to distinguish between the standard version with clear lenses and the many colored or tinted variations offered by the manufacturer, which includes 19 different shades [1]. Choosing a colored variant alters light transmission and contrast perception underwater- a factor to consider depending on whether the activity involves spearfishing, freediving, or scuba diving [1] [2].
Trying on the mask before buying: The most important criterion. This comparison helps you to compare the different models. However, it cannot tell you whether a mask is suitable for your face. Before purchasing, place the mask on your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and check that it stays in place on its own, without any pressure points or leaks. This step represents more than 80% of the actual importance of your purchase. If the skirt doesn't fit your facial structure, no ultra-clear lens, anti-fog treatment, or buckle system will compensate for the problem.
Safety Reminder
Scuba diving and freediving rely on constant and rigorous visual communication with your buddy or the surface team [1]. The choice of lens variations, whether clear, tinted, or with specific colors, must always prioritize the readability of facial expressions and eye contact underwater [1]. Furthermore, clear anti-reflective or UV protective lenses should never be confused with mirrored lenses that obscure the eyes from your diving partner [1] [2]. Assessing visual safety is an integral part of preparing for each dive [1].
Our VerdictThe technical documentation for the Beuchat Maxlux S confirms that it is a technically sound, lightweight model with a reduced internal volume of 127 cm3, which appeals to a wide range of divers and freedivers [1] [2]. Its frameless design, its robustness as certified by the EN 16804 standard, and its attractive price point make it an accessible option [1] [2]. However, the lack of original optical correction and the essential need for a prior fit test remind us that objective scores must always give way to the user's anatomical reality [1] [2].
Maintenance and Lifespan
Maintaining the functional qualities of the Beuchat Maxlux S over the long term requires strict adherence to maintenance guidelines [1]. After each use in saltwater or chlorinated environments, the mask should be thoroughly rinsed with clear freshwater to remove salt crystals and organic impurities [1]. It should be dried in the shade in a well-ventilated area, avoiding any direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight, which could degrade the flexibility of the hypoallergenic silicone skirt [1]. Storing it in the original rigid case effectively protects the lenses and mask body from accidental crushing during transport [1] [2].
Other models from the brand to compareWithin the Beuchat manufacturer's range, the Beuchat Maxlux Evo is a direct alternative that should be considered alongside [1]. Also offering a frameless design with a low internal volume of 130 cm³, and weighing approximately 200 grams, the Maxlux Evo shares the versatile focus of the Maxlux S, suitable for both scuba diving and freediving [1].
