Detailed Analysis
Algorithm & Decompression Stops (O1)The Aqualung i770R incorporates the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm, a well-recognized standard in the diving world for its reliability and ability to manage complex decompression profiles. What particularly distinguishes this computer is the user's ability to adjust the Gradient Factors (GF). This feature offers a level of flexibility that is highly valuable, allowing divers to adapt the decompression profile to their own fatigue levels, the nature of the dive, or environmental conditions. Such personalization provides a guarantee of safety and comfort, giving the diver control over their ascent parameters. The complete display of the ceiling and total time to surface (TTS) in real-time are crucial pieces of information that contribute to informed decision-making underwater. The ability to fine-tune these settings fully justifies a high score in this category, as it meets the requirements of both advanced recreational divers and those involved in light technical diving.
Air & multi-gas (O2)Gas management is a fundamental pillar of modern diving, and the Aqualung i770R excels in this area. It allows you to monitor up to four different gas mixtures, a capability that opens the door to more complex and longer dives, especially those requiring the use of nitrox or light trimix. The wireless air integration, via Aqualung transmitters, is a feature that greatly simplifies reading tank pressure, providing direct and constant visibility of remaining dive time. This technology uses low-frequency radio, a technical choice that avoids potential interference and the noise sometimes associated with ultrasonic systems. While the air integration isn't directly scored in our rating system, its performance and reliability are undeniable advantages. The robustness of the multi-gas capability is a central element for divers who seek to optimize their gas consumption and plan their dives with increased precision.
Screen & Ergonomics (O3)The high-resolution color TFT screen of the Aqualung i770R is undoubtedly a major highlight. Its readability is so clear that even with thick gloves or in low-light conditions, essential information remains visible and distinct. The vibrant colors and high contrast make it easier to read dive data, thereby reducing the cognitive load on the diver. However, while the touchscreen interface is modern and intuitive on the surface, it can present a challenge underwater. Operating it with thick gloves, especially in cold water, requires some practice and adaptation. Fortunately, the presence of backup buttons provides a reliable alternative when the touchscreen becomes less responsive. Therefore, the excellent readability score is somewhat tempered by the need to learn how to navigate the interface, which may require some time. The overall ergonomics are designed for the diver, but finding the right balance between modern touchscreen technology and underwater practicality is a delicate matter.
Battery Life (O4)The Aqualung i770R is equipped with a rechargeable battery, a feature that offers undeniable daily convenience. No more stress about having to find a replacement battery before each dive, recharging via a magnetic cable is simple and practical. However, this autonomy, advertised at approximately 30 hours, is directly affected by the intensive use of the high-resolution TFT screen. While the ease of recharging appeals to many divers, this dependence on an external power source can become a limitation during extended trips or cruises where access to electricity is limited. Therefore, the score is adjusted to reflect this reality: careful battery management is necessary to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The battery life is sufficient for a full day of intense diving, but the need for repeated recharges should be factored into your planning for underwater adventures.
Connectivity & App (O5)The Bluetooth connectivity of the Aqualung i770R is stable and efficient, allowing for easy synchronization with the DiverLog+ ecosystem. This mature and well-developed application offers a comprehensive platform for dive management. It allows you to download dive profiles, analyze data, share your experiences, and update the computer's firmware. The ease with which data can be transferred and viewed is a major advantage for the modern diver who wants to maintain a detailed record of their dives. Connectivity goes beyond simple data transmission, it enhances the user experience by providing analysis and planning tools. Such a complete and reliable ecosystem contributes to a better understanding of your own performance and continuous improvement in your diving practices.
Compass & Instruments (O6)The inclusion of a 3D compass that compensates for tilt is a welcome feature for underwater navigation. It provides accurate orientation even when the computer is not perfectly level, which is a significant advantage in complex environments or when visibility is limited. A compass is an essential instrument for planning and executing dives with limited visual references. However, while functional, the integrated compass does not always match the comfort and precision of a dedicated external compass, especially for divers who regularly practice navigation. The score of 3.5/5 reflects this reality: it's a useful tool, but one that can be complemented by other instruments for more demanding requirements. The presence of this compass is a plus, but its use requires some practice to get the most out of it.
Robustness & Depth (O7)The Aqualung i770R is built with a robust design intended to withstand the rigors of the underwater environment. Its depth rating of 100 meters places it firmly within the recreational dive computer segment, while still providing a comfortable safety margin for deeper dives in that category. Durability is a fundamental criterion for all diving equipment, as reliability is paramount. However, a score of 3.5/5 indicates that, although robust, it doesn't quite reach the level of some computers specifically designed for extreme technical diving, which offer even more durable housings or greater depth ratings. For the demanding recreational diver, this robustness is more than sufficient, but it's important to contextualize this performance in relation to its intended use. The construction is designed for longevity, but like all equipment, it requires regular maintenance and careful attention.
Price & Customer Service (O8)The Aqualung i770R is positioned in the premium segment of the dive computer market, which represents a significant investment. The average price observed is between 650-750 EUR (July 2026), reflecting the quality of the materials, advanced features, and embedded technology. Regarding after-sales service, Aqualung offers very good support. Recent computers, often factory-sealed, facilitate standard exchanges in case of problems under warranty. However, the quality of the after-sales experience can depend heavily on the local reseller. A good reseller will be a valuable asset for quickly and efficiently handling any requests. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a retailer known for its customer service. This score of 3.5/5 takes into account the high price point and the reliance on the distribution network for after-sales service, which are crucial factors in the purchasing decision.
