Apeks Black Ice Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Apeks Black Ice falls into the category of solid back-inflate BCDs and makes a specific promise: to serve an advanced recreational diving practice, in cold water, for beginners. This review doesn't replace a hands-on trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently good, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting, accessories, and skill level. As a back-inflate, this model places buoyancy in the back. It can free up the torso and support a more horizontal trim, but its stability on the surface must be tested with actual weights. [2] [3]
The Verdict: In SummaryThe Apeks Black Ice receives an overall AquaExposure score of 4.1/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its key features include 1000D Cordura material, 6 stainless steel D-rings, a buoyancy of 42 lbs, and the recognized Apeks finish. Its main limitations are that it is heavy (3.1 kg) and lacks technical compatibility. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 19 kg, or 42 lbs. This value should not be considered in isolation. It represents the overall negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The Black Ice is Apeks's robust back-inflate system, a direct competitor to the X-Black from Scubapro. It features 1000D Cordura material, six stainless steel D-rings that meet specifications, and a generous buoyancy of 42 lbs. This offers excellent value for divers in cold water who want a durable back-inflate without opting for a backplate/wing system. Based on this assessment, the Apeks Black Ice receives a G1 score of 4.3/5. Proper trim and purge control must be performed under actual diving conditions, not just in a dry environment. [1]
G2 Weighting System
The model features a quick-release weighting system with a stated capacity of 9 kg. It includes two trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weight assessment. Weights should always remain easily accessible and appropriate for the diving environment. [3]
The G2 score of 4.3/5 reflects the capacity and logical design of this weighting system. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Apeks Black Ice includes two storage pockets and six metal D-rings. The specifications describe these as six stainless steel D-rings. This information is important when carrying items such as a bailout bottle, a reel, a light, or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 4.0/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories commonly used for advanced recreational diving, cold water conditions, or beginner technical diving.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as reinforced straps with quick-release buckles. The specifications mention 3 adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on the size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.0/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 3.1 kg, and the construction is specified as 1000D Cordura. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 5.0/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any servicing, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for advanced recreational diving, cold water use, beginner technical diving, and can be used in temperate and cold waters. The specifications state no dual-tank compatibility and no sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual range of uses in this configuration does not include dual-tank setups or sidemount configurations. [1]The G6 score of 3.0/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it doesn't suggest that one model is suitable for everyone. A shift towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 19 kg, the Apeks Black Ice needs to be tested with your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of the dive, not based on a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features reinforced straps and QR buckles. Wear it with your usual thermal protection, then check underwater how easy it is to breathe, access the purge valves, use the direct system, and position the tank. A poorly fitted BCD adds mental strain that a diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third aspect to consider is its usability. Like a back-mounted buoyancy compensator (BCD), this model places the buoyancy control in the rear. It can free up the upper body and promote a more horizontal trim, but its stability on the surface must be tested with actual weights. The listed features – 1000D Cordura material, 6 stainless steel D-rings, 42 lbs of buoyancy, recognized Apeks quality – should be weighed against its limitations: it is heavy (3.1 kg) and has no technical compatibility options. A suggested average price of €624 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a real-world test dive, a proper weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-evaluating the entire configuration. For a robust back-inflate BCD, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Apeks Black Ice is suitable for advanced recreational diving, cold water conditions, and beginner technical diving, provided the diver's build, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include its 1000D Cordura construction, six stainless steel D-rings, a buoyancy of 42 lbs, and the recognized Apeks finish. However, its limitations are that it is heavy (3.1 kg) and not compatible with technical diving setups. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest score, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
