Cressi Aquawing Max Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists a lot of technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Cressi Aquawing Max falls into the backplate + wing donut category (advanced recreational) and makes a specific promise: to serve an advanced recreational diving practice, suitable for cold water conditions, and designed for a backplate wing transition. This guide is not a substitute for a trial, but it will help you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently good, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]## Summary of Findings
The Cressi Aquawing Max receives an overall AquaExposure score of 4.1/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not as a universal standard. Its strengths include being the "Testers' Choice" winner for 2024, having instant adjustment capabilities, featuring four pre-curved stainless steel D-rings, offering 38 lbs of buoyancy plus trim pockets. Its main limitations are its weight (4 kg including the aluminum backplate), having only one storage pocket, and lacking a stainless steel backplate. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 BuoyancyThe stated buoyancy is 17 kg, which is equivalent to 38 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. Conversely, an excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]
Winner of Scuba Diving Magazine's Testers' Choice 2024 award. This backplate + wing donut is designed for those transitioning from a jacket configuration. It features a unique MAS (tool-free instant adjustment), 4 pre-curved stainless steel D-rings, a generous 38 lb buoyancy, and trim pockets on the tank strap. The aluminum backplate is lightweight (total weight of 4 kg). A 2.5 kg weight belt option is available. This system is ideal for divers looking to switch to a wing configuration without the complexity of a true technical setup. Based on this assessment, the Cressi Aquawing Max receives a G1 score of 4.5/5. Trim and purge control must be performed under actual diving conditions, not just in shallow water. [1]
G2 Weight System
This model features a quick-release weight system with a stated capacity of 9 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always remain easily accessible and adjustable to suit the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 4.0/5 reflects the carrying capacity and logical design of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual function of the weight pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.### G3 Storage
The Cressi Aquawing Max features one storage pocket and four metal D-rings. The product description details these attachments as pre-curved stainless steel D-rings. This information is important when carrying a buoyancy compensator, a reel, a light or an underwater housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.5/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with advanced recreational use, cold water diving, and enriched air diving (EAN).
G4 Harness
The harness is described as a unisex MAS (Modular Adjustment System). The product description mentions 3 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on size, shoulder width, torso length, the wetsuit being worn, and how the tank sits on the back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.7/5 reflects the potential for adjustment offered by this design. A test dive should verify that the straps do not pull, that the waistband does not ride up, and that the controls remain accessible when the buoyancy compensator is inflated.
G5 Materials
The declared weight is 4 kg, and the construction is listed as Air-Net + aluminum backplate. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone do not determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]The G5 score of 4.3/5 reflects this assessment. The actual condition of a used BCD- its servicing history, inflators, and purge valves- must be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
This configuration is advertised for advanced recreational diving, cold water use, backplate/wing (BPW) transitions, and can also be used in warm, temperate, and cold waters. The specifications indicate no declared dual-tank compatibility and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual capabilities are neither dual-tank nor sidemount within this configuration. [1]
The G6 score of 3.5/5 expresses its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it does not suggest that a single model is suitable for everyone. An evolution towards technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 17 kg, the Cressi Aquawing Max must be tested with your actual equipment configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with checking your weighting at the end of a dive, not based on a general rule. [4]The second check concerns comfort. This model advertises a unisex MAS (Modular Adjustment System). Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while underwater, verify the breathing, access to the purge valves, the direct-system function, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted buoyancy compensator adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to the environment and their buddy. [2]
The third check is regarding usability. Like a plate and wing system, this model separates the structure, the harness, and the wing. This modularity can facilitate progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified qualities – Vainqueur Testers' Choice 2024, instant MAS adjustment, 4 pre-curved stainless steel D-rings, buoyancy of 38 lbs + trim pockets – should be weighed against its limitations: it is heavy (4 kg including the aluminum backplate), has only one storage pocket, and does not include a stainless steel backplate. The average indicative price of €499 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety ReminderThe advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a real-world test dive, a proper weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories should lead to rechecking the entire configuration. For backplate + wing donut systems (advanced recreational diving), the key is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our Verdict
The Cressi Aquawing Max is suitable for advanced recreational diving, cold water use, and as a backplate/wing system transition when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include being a Vainqueur Testers' Choice 2024 winner, having instant mask adjustment capabilities, four pre-curved stainless steel D-rings, a buoyancy of 38 lbs plus trim pockets. Its limitations are that it is heavy at 4 kg (aluminum backplate included), has only one storage pocket, and does not include a stainless steel backplate. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest rating, but rather on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
