What is the approximate average price for the Mares Prestige SLS in 2026?
The average indicative price for 2026 is €399, calculated from a new retail range of €349 to €449. This figure is not a real-time selling price.
What is the buoyancy of the Mares Prestige SLS?
The consolidated datasheet indicates a buoyancy of 16 kg or 35 lbs. This value should be compared to the actual weight added for weights, tanks, thermal protection, and accessories being used.
Who is this model best suited for?
The Mares Prestige SLS is designed for travel, warm water diving, and recreational use. It's recommended for beginner to intermediate divers, primarily in warmer waters.
What should you check before making a purchase?
You need to check the harness, access to the dump valves, weight distribution, fit, condition of the D-rings, and how the BCD performs with all your gear attached.

Mares Prestige SLS Test: What you really need to consider before buying it
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by adding up technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Mares Prestige SLS falls into the category of lightweight travel jackets and makes a specific promise: to serve a diving practice geared towards travel, warm water, and leisure activities. This guide is not a substitute for a trial, but it allows you to know exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't so much whether this BCD is performant in absolute terms, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a wrap-around jacket, this model prioritizes volume distributed around the torso. Therefore, you need to check underwater that this "wrap" doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. [2] [3]
The verdict in summaryThe Mares Prestige SLS receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.3/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: Very lightweight (2.1 kg), compact for travel, 4 aluminum D-rings, and affordable price. Its main limitations are: No trim pockets, only 2 adjustment points, and suitable for warm water only. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 16 kg, which is equivalent to 35 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It represents the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value may reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The Mares Prestige SLS is Mares' travel BCD. It is very lightweight (2.1 kg), compact, and features four compliant aluminum D-rings. It offers sufficient buoyancy for warm water diving. There are no trim pockets - something to note for divers who want to fine-tune their position. This assessment gives the Mares Prestige SLS a G1 score of 3.5/5. Trim control and purging should be checked under the intended conditions, not just on dry land. [1]
G2 Weight System
The model features a weight release system with a stated capacity of 7 kg. It includes 0 trim pockets. This configuration can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always remain easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 3.7/5 reflects the carrying capacity and logical design of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the weight pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Mares Prestige SLS includes 2 storage pockets and 4 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as four aluminum D-rings. This information is important when carrying items such as a surface marker buoy, a reel, a light, or an underwater housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.2/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with travel diving, warm water conditions, and recreational use.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as lightweight SLS straps. The specifications mention two adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 3.3/5 indicates the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.1 kg, and the construction is described as lightweight SLS nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 4.3/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for travel, warm water diving, and recreational use. The specifications indicate no declared compatibility with twin tanks and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, in this configuration, it is neither suitable for twin tank setups nor for sidemount diving. [1]The G6 score of 2.0/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it doesn't suggest that one model is suitable for everyone. A shift towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 16 kg, the Mares Prestige SLS needs to be tested with your actual equipment configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of the dive, not based on a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features lightweight SLS straps. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while underwater, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct system, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to observing the environment and their dive buddy. [2]The third assessment is usability. As a wrap-around jacket, this model prioritizes a volume distributed around the torso. It's important to verify underwater that this design doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. The identified advantages – very lightweight at 2.1 kg, compact for travel, 4 aluminum D-rings, affordable price – should be weighed against the limitations: no trim pockets, only two adjustment points, suitable for warm water only. The average indicative price of €399 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a trial dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the configuration. For this lightweight travel jacket, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Mares Prestige SLS is suitable for travel, warm water diving, and recreational use when the user's body type, weighting requirements, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include being very lightweight (2.1 kg), compact for travel, featuring four aluminum D-rings, and having an accessible price point. However, its limitations are that it lacks trim pockets, has only two adjustment points, and is designed for warm water use only. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest rating but rather on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
