Mares XR Rec Trim Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by accumulating technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Mares XR Rec Trim falls into the backplate + wing donut technical system category and makes a specific promise: to serve an advanced recreational diving, beginner technical diving, and technical travel diving practice. This article is not a substitute for a trial, but it will help you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently performant, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]## Summary of Findings
The Mares XR Rec Trim receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.6/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not as a universal standard. Its key features include: 1000D Cordura material, 6 aluminum D-rings (6mm), lightweight at 2.8 kg, and an independent harness. Its main limitations are the lack of integrated weights, aluminum D-rings (not stainless steel), and the absence of storage pockets. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 17 kg, which is equivalent to 37 lb. This value should not be interpreted in isolation. It represents the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. Conversely, an excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The Mares XR Rec Trim is the backplate/wing donut from Mares' XR line. It features 1000D Cordura material, a 3mm aluminum backplate, 6 aluminum D-rings (6mm), and a buoyancy of 37 lbs with the donut configuration. It has an independent harness for shoulders and waist. It weighs only 2.8 kg. This is a good technical transition option at an accessible price. No integrated weights are included. Based on this information, the Mares XR Rec Trim receives a G1 score of 4.0/5. Proper trim and buoyancy control must be performed under actual diving conditions, not just in a dry environment. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not offer any integrated quick-release weights in the described configuration, with a specified capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust your buoyancy, but it doesn't replace proper weight management. Weights should always be easily accessible, understood, and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 2.5/5 reflects the weighting capacity and logic of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Mares XR Rec Trim provides 0 storage pockets and 6 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these as 6 aluminum D-rings (6mm) (4 shoulder + 2 waist). This information is important when carrying items such as a dry bag, a reel, a light or an underwater housing. [1]
The G3 score of 2.8/5 does not evaluate the volume of a pocket in absolute terms. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with advanced recreational diving, beginner technical diving, and travel diving.### G4 Harness
The harness is described as a 3mm aluminum backplate with an independent shoulder/waist system. The specifications mention 3 adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit thickness, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.5/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.8 kg, and the construction is specified as 1000D Cordura. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 4.5/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any servicing, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for advanced recreational diving, beginner technical diving, and travel-related technical diving, suitable for warm, temperate, and cold water conditions. The specifications indicate no declared compatibility with twin tanks and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, in this configuration, it is neither compatible with twin tanks nor sidemount setups. [1]The G6 score of 3.5/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it doesn't suggest that one configuration is suitable for everyone. A shift towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 17 kg, the Mares XR Rec Trim must be tested with your actual equipment setup. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of a dive, not based on a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features an aluminum backplate (3mm) and an independent harness for shoulders/torso. Wear it with your usual thermal protection, then check underwater how easily you can breathe, access purge valves, use the direct system, and position the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds a mental burden that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third aspect to consider is its usability. Like backplate and wing systems, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can be beneficial for progression, but it's essential to verify the assembly, weight distribution, and wing size before changing configurations. The listed features – 1000D Cordura material, 6 aluminum D-rings (6mm), lightweight at 2.8 kg, independent harness – should be weighed against its limitations: no integrated weights, aluminum D-rings (not stainless steel), and lack of storage pockets. The average price of €674 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a test dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the entire configuration. For backplate + wing donut systems, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Mares XR Rec Trim is suitable for advanced recreational diving, beginner technical diving, and technical travel dives when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include 1000D Cordura material, six aluminum D-rings (6mm), a lightweight design at 2.8 kg, and an independent harness. Its limitations are that it does not have integrated weights, the D-rings are made of aluminum (not stainless steel), and it lacks storage pockets. Therefore, the best purchase is not necessarily based on the highest rating, but rather on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
