What is the approximate average price for the Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L in 2026?
The average indicative price for 2026 is €299, calculated from the new retail range of €249 to €349. This figure is not a real-time selling price.
What is the buoyancy offered by the Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L?
The consolidated datasheet indicates a buoyancy of 8.2 kg or 18 lbs. This value should be compared to the actual weight added for weights, the tank, thermal protection, and any accessories being used.
Who is this model best suited for?
The Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L is designed for beginners using a backplate and wing (BPW) system- ideal for warm water diving with a limited budget. It's recommended for intermediate level divers- primarily in warmer waters.
What should you check before making a purchase?
You need to check the harness, access to the dump valves, weight distribution, size, condition of the D-rings, and how the BCD performs with your complete gear setup.

Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L Test: What you really need to consider before buying it.
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by adding technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L falls into the Backplate + Wing donut category (technical entry) and makes a specific promise: to serve a practice geared towards BPW initiation, warm water, and a limited budget. This guide doesn't replace a trial, but it allows you to understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]The question is less about whether this BCD is inherently good and more about verifying if it's compatible with your regulator, thermal protection, weight system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing (BPW) system, this model separates the structure, harness, and wing. This modularity can accommodate progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in Summary
The Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L receives an overall AquaExposure score of 2.5/5. Its rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal truth. Its strengths include: very accessible price, BPW initiation suitability, and lightweight (2 kg). Its main limitations are: 600D nylon material (less durable), buoyancy of 18 lbs (suitable for warm water), no trim pockets, and aluminum D-rings. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The declared buoyancy is 8.2 kg, which is 18 lb. This volume should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]
Sopras Sub is the entry-level technical brand offering accessible options. It features an 18L donut wing made of 600D nylon, with 4 aluminum D-rings and a lightweight aluminum backplate. Buoyancy: 18 lbs - suitable for warm water only. The price is very attractive for discovering the backplate/wing system without making a major investment. The construction quality is basic. Based on this information, the Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L receives a G1 score of 2.8/5. Trim and purge control must be performed under the intended conditions, not just in dry conditions. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not include an integrated quick-release weight system as described, with a stated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 0 trim pockets. This configuration can help adjust balance, but it does not replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always remain manageable and appropriate for the environment. [3]The G2 score of 2.0/5 reflects the capacity and logical arrangement of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L features 0 storage pockets and 4 metal D-rings. The product description lists these attachments as 4 aluminum D-rings. This information is important when you need to carry a drogue, a reel, a light or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 2.0/5 does not evaluate the volume of a pocket in absolute terms. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with beginner backplate wing (BPW) use, warm water diving, and a limited budget.
G4 Harness
The harness is described as simple webbing plus an aluminum backplate. The product description mentions 2 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and the position of the tank on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 3.0/5 reflects the potential for adjustability of this design. A test dive should verify that the straps do not pull, that the waistband does not ride up, and that the controls remain accessible when the vest is inflated.
G5 MaterialsThe stated weight is 2 kg, and the construction is advertised as 600D nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate the expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 3.0/5 reflects this assessment of construction. The actual condition of a used BCD, including its servicing history, inflators, and purge valves, must be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the reputation of the brand.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for beginner backplate and wing (BPW) setups, warm water diving, and budget-conscious divers. The specifications indicate no declared dual-tank compatibility and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, in this configuration, it is neither suitable for dual-tank nor sidemount diving. [1]
The G6 score of 2.5/5 expresses its ability to adapt to changes in diving practice, but it does not suggest that the model is suitable for all types of diving. An evolution towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buyingThe first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 8.2 kg, the Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L needs to be adjusted to your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The correct decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of the dive, not based on a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features simple webbing plus an aluminum backplate. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while underwater, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct system, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds mental strain that a diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]
The third check is about usability. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and wing. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified advantages – very accessible price, good for beginners (BPW), lightweight at 2 kg – should be weighed against the limitations: 600D nylon (less durable), buoyancy of 18 lbs (suitable for warm water), no trim pockets, aluminum D-rings. The average indicative price of €299 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.<!-- DIRECTION VISUELLE SECONDAIRE : detail of the simple webbing harness + aluminum backplate and metal D-rings of the Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L. Safety Reminder
The advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a test dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-checking the entire configuration. For backplate + wing donut (technical entry) systems, it is essential to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our Verdict
The Sopras Sub Wing Donut 18L is suitable for introductory backplate and wing use, warm water conditions, and a limited budget when the user's morphology, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include its very accessible price, suitability for BPW initiation, and light weight (2 kg). Its limitations include 600D nylon (less durable), buoyancy of 18 lbs (in warm water), no trim pockets, and aluminum D-rings. Therefore, a good purchase does not consist of simply following the highest rating, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and sized appropriately for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
