I am often asked if it is truly necessary to spend over a thousand euros to have a readable screen on a dive computer. A dive computer is not just a simple accessory, it is the critical tool that manages your decompression safety. Until now, at Shearwater, the AMOLED screen was reserved for the Teric, a very high-end and expensive model.

The Shearwater Tern changes things. By removing complex functions, such as Trimix or air management, which most divers do not need, the brand offers a compact, elegant device that is above all exceptionally clear. This review aims to confirm whether, beyond its attractive price, it lives up to the reputation for robustness of its predecessors.

Overall Score: 4.2/5

O1 Algorithm & Decompression Stops

As with all models from this brand, safety is never an option. This device provides you with all the information you need to understand your decompression process. It uses the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with adjustable Gradient Factors, offering a complete range of adjustments. The detailed display of decompression information is impeccable. Haptic alerts, in the form of vibrations, are a real plus for ensuring you don't miss any alarms underwater. The historical reliability of this algorithm at Shearwater is well established.### Air and Multi-Gas Capabilities

The Tern is designed for recreational diving and performs exceptionally well in this area. It handles air and Nitrox perfectly, allowing you to configure up to three different gas mixes. However, it does not support Trimix or rebreathers (CCR), a deliberate choice made to maintain an accessible price point and a streamlined interface. Importantly, this model does not offer wireless air integration, a feature reserved for its larger counterpart, the Tern TX.

Display and Ergonomics

The AMOLED display is at the heart of this device. The black is absolute, the colors are vibrant, which makes reading intuitive even in conditions of poor visibility. With a high resolution for its 1.3-inch size, the screen compensates for its small surface area with infinite contrast. The four-button navigation is clear, intuitive, and perfectly usable even with thick gloves. The display customization options are extensive, allowing each diver to organize information according to their preferences.

Battery LifeBattery life is a key strength for a wristwatch-style computer with such a bright screen. The rechargeable Li-ion battery provides approximately 20 hours of use in dive mode, which is more than enough for an intensive weekend or a short cruise. The battery indicator is accurate, avoiding any unpleasant surprises. Furthermore, the battery's reliability in cold water is excellent, a detail that is important for divers in lakes or quarries.

O5 Connectivity & App

Shearwater excels in this area. Native Bluetooth allows for fast and seamless synchronization with the Shearwater Cloud app, which is a benchmark for digital dive logs. Firmware updates are easily performed over-the-air (OTA), ensuring that your computer always benefits from the latest improvements. Data export is open, facilitating integration with other dive log software.

O6 Compass & Instruments

This is where the Tern makes compromises. It lacks a digital compass, which explains its lower score in this category. Therefore, you will need to equip yourself with a traditional analog compass. On the other hand, it integrates a very precise temperature sensor and offers a complete freediving mode, which will delight enthusiasts of this discipline.

O7 Robustness & DepthDespite its elegant design, suitable for everyday wear, the Tern is a true dive instrument. It is certified to a maximum depth of 120 meters, which comfortably covers the needs of recreational diving and even beyond. The tempered mineral glass offers good scratch resistance, although it's always important to be careful. The CE manufacturer certification provides reassurance regarding overall build quality.

O8 Price & Customer Service

The Tern's price point is strategically positioned. It offers the best value for accessing AMOLED technology from Shearwater. The brand's after-sales service is an absolute benchmark in the diving industry. With regional expert centers and a well-documented out-of-warranty replacement policy, you are investing in peace of mind. The standard 2-year warranty further enhances this positive picture.

Shearwater's after-sales service is an absolute benchmark in the diving industry. The brand has built a reputation for excellence thanks to expert regional centers that can provide quick and effective assistance. The process for out-of-warranty replacements is clearly documented, offering a level of transparency and peace of mind that is rare. To date, no significant weaknesses have been identified regarding Shearwater's support, which further reinforces confidence in this investment. This is a key factor for a safety device as crucial as a dive computer.

If the Shearwater Tern has piqued your interest, know that the Shearwater range offers other models, each with its own specific features. For integrated air management and a digital compass, you might be interested in the Shearwater Tern TX. For technical divers or those seeking a more compact format, the Shearwater Perdix 2 or the Shearwater Teric might meet your needs. Each model is designed with the same rigor and safety philosophy that characterize the brand.
