What is the difference between the Tern and the Tern TX?
The Tern TX features a 3D digital compass and supports wireless air integration (up to 4 transmitters). The standard Tern does not have these two features, making it available at a more affordable price.
Can the Tern replace the Teric?
For recreational divers or those using light technical diving techniques (Nitrox), yes. However, it does not support trimix or rebreathers, and its glass is made of tempered mineral rather than sapphire.
What is the actual battery life of the Shearwater Tern?
The rechargeable battery provides approximately 20 hours of operating time in dive mode, which is more than enough to cover a weekend or a short cruise before needing to be placed on its charging base.
For a long time, access to a dive computer with a watch-style format, featuring an AMOLED screen and the reliability of Shearwater, required a significant investment, often reserved for the Teric. Many divers desired a more affordable alternative, one that lacked advanced features like Trimix or cave diving capabilities, which they would never use, while still retaining the exceptional readability that makes the brand so renowned. It is with this in mind that the new Shearwater Tern and Tern TX were designed. They embody the promise of a compact design, understated elegance for everyday use, and a vibrant color screen, all tailored for the regular recreational diver. This in-depth review aims to examine whether the adjustments made to make these models more accessible, particularly the use of mineral glass and slightly optimized battery life, compromise the fundamental underwater experience. We will dissect each aspect to understand the true value proposition of this computer.

Detailed Analysis
O1 Algorithm & Decompression StopsShearwater, true to its heritage, never compromises on safety. The Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm, with its fully adjustable Gradient Factors (GF), offers remarkably transparent decompression management. You can see your decompression limit and Total Ascent Time (TTS) in real time, without any "black box" algorithms. This approach gives the diver complete control over their saturation profile, a feature that is highly valued. The display is exceptionally clear, and the haptic motors, which generate vibrations under the casing, are powerful enough to be clearly felt, even through a 7 mm wetsuit. This direct level of safety immediately inspires confidence.
O2 Air & multi-gasThis is where the Tern clearly differentiates itself from the Teric. The Tern TX is specifically designed for open-circuit diving, whether it be recreational or more advanced. It manages up to 3 switchable gases, covering Air and Nitrox up to 100%. Trimix and CCR (rebreather) modes are deliberately absent, a strategic choice in product segmentation. Only the Tern TX model incorporates wireless air integration, a feature that, although not included in the base score, is a major advantage for managing air consumption. This targeted positioning justifies our weighted score of 3.6 for this criterion, as it perfectly meets the needs of its target audience without burdening the device with superfluous features for recreational divers.
O3 Display & ErgonomicsThe Shearwater Tern TX's undeniable strength lies in its display. The color AMOLED screen pierces through the darkness of the depths and murky waters with striking contrast, offering such direct readability that even when wearing thick gloves, information is instantly accessible. The circular 1.3-inch screen, while watch-like in format, maintains exceptional visual quality. Navigation is performed via four push buttons located on the sides of the bezel. This configuration requires a short period of adjustment for those accustomed to two-button interfaces, but it quickly becomes intuitive and fluid once mastered. Customization of the displays is also an advantage, allowing each diver to organize the data according to their preferences.
O4 Battery Life & PowerThe compact size of the Tern TX design naturally means it has a small internal battery. Therefore, it is wise to get into the habit of charging it regularly, especially between diving weekends, to ensure consistent availability. The lithium-ion battery, which cannot be replaced by the user, promises approximately 20 hours of operating time in dive mode. This duration may vary slightly depending on screen brightness and the use of the air integration feature. Charging is done wirelessly via a USB charging base provided, an elegant solution that eliminates any risk of water ingress associated with an open charging port. Its performance in cold water is excellent, as the battery maintains its output even under demanding conditions. The charge indicator is accurate, allowing for stress-free energy management.
O5 Connectivity & AppConnectivity is an area where Shearwater excels, and the Tern TX is no exception. Native Bluetooth ensures instant synchronization with the Shearwater Cloud application, a platform of exemplary quality and ergonomics. This application not only allows you to download and analyze your dive profiles with impressive detail, but also lets you manage the computer's settings and update the firmware (OTA) effortlessly. The open export of data is also a significant advantage, offering valuable flexibility for divers who want to use third-party software. The Shearwater Cloud ecosystem is a model in its class, greatly simplifying the diver's life and post-dive analysis.
O6 Compass & Instruments
The Tern TX stands out with the integration of a 3D digital compass that offers remarkable precision and responsiveness, an essential tool for underwater navigation. This compass is a major asset, providing reliable and consistent orientation even when tilted. In addition to the compass, the computer also integrates a precise temperature sensor, providing useful environmental data. For freedivers, a dedicated Freediving mode is available, offering information specific to this discipline. These instruments, combined with the overall robustness of the device, make it a versatile and very, very, very reliable companion for various diving activities.### 7 Robustness and Depth Rating
The Shearwater Tern TX is certified for a depth of 120 meters and is designed to withstand the rigors of the underwater environment. Its housing, while compact, offers considerable robustness for intensive recreational use. The tempered mineral glass effectively protects the screen from scratches and common impacts. It's important to note that, although very durable, it doesn't reach the level of protection offered by the brand's Tek models, which often use sapphire glass. This compromise is perfectly acceptable for the intended target audience, offering a perfect balance between durability and cost. The CE manufacturer certification confirms its compliance with European safety standards, guaranteeing quality and reliability.
8 Price and Customer ServiceThe Shearwater Tern TX offers a very attractive price-performance ratio, making the excellence of Shearwater's AMOLED display finally accessible to a wider audience. Shearwater's after-sales service is an absolute benchmark in the industry. The brand is recognized for the quality of its support, with regional expert centers and a clearly documented out-of-warranty replacement policy. There are no known weaknesses regarding their customer service, which provides users with peace of mind. The standard 2-year warranty meets market expectations, but it's the reputation for reliability and responsiveness of the after-sales service that truly makes the difference. It is a safe investment, backed by exemplary customer service.
Who is this computer for?The Shearwater Tern TX is the ideal dive computer for recreational divers- whether they are beginners (Open Water) or more experienced (Advanced Nitrox)- who seek the unparalleled readability of an AMOLED screen in a stylish and discreet watch format, perfect for everyday wear.
