This mask is designed for freedivers and spearfishers who are looking for a panoramic field of vision and reduced bulk thanks to its frameless design. This mask is not ideal for divers who require corrective lenses or scratch resistance equivalent to tempered mineral glass.
Detailed Analysis
M1 - Volume and Field of Vision (Score: 4.5/5)The Aqualung Sphera X features a frameless design that brings the lenses closer to the eyes. The curved polymer lenses offer an extended panoramic field of view of 180 degrees with minimal distortion. However, the exact internal volume in cubic centimeters is not specified in official documentation.
Frameless design: Yes (Score: 5/5) Curved panoramic lenses: Yes (Score: 5/5) * Internal volume specification: Data not documented (Score: 3/5)
M2 - Skirt and Fit (Score: 4.2/5)
This model incorporates a silicone skirt with Advanced Fit Technology, using textured bands to improve adhesion and skin comfort. No statistical studies guarantee a universal fit.
Skirt material: High-quality silicone (Score: 4/5) Facial fit technology: Advanced Fit Technology (Score: 5/5) * Universal seal prediction: No guarantee without testing (Score: 3/5)
M3 - Lenses and Communication (Score: 3.5/5)
The Plexisol polymer lenses allow for specific curvatures but limit hardness and optical compatibility. No original mounting options are documented for corrective lenses.
Lens material: Plexisol polymer (Score: 3/5) Original optical treatment: Standard, without correction (Score: 3/5) * Compatibility with corrective lenses: Not documented (Score: 4/5)
M4 - Anti-Fog and Maintenance (Score: 4.0/5)The specifications indicate an initial anti-fog and scratch-resistant treatment on the Plexisol material. The user must apply appropriate cleaning procedures to preserve the synthetic surface.
Factory anti-fog treatment: documented for Plexisol (Score: 4/5) Scratch resistance: documented (Score: 4/5) * Material sensitivity to maintenance: high (Score: 4/5)
M5 - Strap and Ergonomics (Score: 4.5/5)
The ergonomic strap distributes pressure on the occiput. The micro-buckle system allows for easy adjustment, even with gloves. Direct attachment to the mask skirt promotes stability.
Occipital strap design: ergonomic (Score: 5/5) Micro-buckle system: easy adjustment (Score: 4/5) * Accessibility of adjustments: suitable for use with gloves (Score: 4/5)
M6 - Robustness and Accessories (Score: 4.0/5)
The model is supplied with a rigid EVA case resistant to corrosion. The absence of an external rigid frame reduces the risk of mechanical damage but requires careful storage.

What you need to know before buying
Plexisol lenses offer the flexibility necessary for panoramic designs, but they are vulnerable to scratches caused by sand. Rinsing with fresh water and using a hard case are required. The lack of optical correction and the need for a morphological fitting complete the list of important considerations.
Trying on the mask before purchase: the criterion that outweighs all other scores
This comparison helps you compare the models. However, it cannot tell you if a mask is suitable for your face. Before buying, place the mask on your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and check that it stays in place on its own, without any pressure points or leaks. This step represents more than 80% of the actual importance of your purchase. If the skirt does not fit your facial structure, no ultra-clear lens, anti-fog treatment, or buckle system will compensate for the problem.
Safety reminder
Safety relies on visual communication between dive buddies. Tinted, mirrored, or filtered variants reduce light transmission and alter the readability of facial expressions. Using a standard clear lens remains the best option to preserve optimal non-verbal communication.
Our verdictThe Aqualung Sphera X is suitable for freediving and spearfishing thanks to its frameless design and Plexisol lenses. However, the susceptibility to scratches and the lack of optical correction are objective limitations. The overall score of 4.14 out of 5 reflects these features.
Maintenance and Lifespan
Cleaning the Plexisol requires mild products without abrasive solvents. Rinsing with clear water after each dive removes salt. Storing it in the hard case protects the structure.
