Detailed Analysis
M1 - Volume and Field of Vision
This section examines the overall design of the mask and its impact on compactness as well as visual clarity underwater. The frameless design eliminates the rigid external frame to bring the lenses closer to the eyes. Precise quantitative data regarding the internal volume are not published by the manufacturer. - Frameless design and compactness: Score 4.0 / 5 - Absence of specified internal volume in documentation: Data not documented
M2 - Skirt and Fit
The analysis of the skirt focuses on the quality of the silicone used and the flexibility of the areas that make contact with the face. The model features a soft silicone skirt available in white or black, depending on the chosen reference. No technical data allows for predicting absolute watertightness on a particular facial structure. - Quality of silicone and flexibility of the skirt: Score 4.0 / 5 - Universal prediction of facial seal: Data not documented
M3 - Lenses and CommunicationThis criterion evaluates the optical properties and treatments applied to the lenses. The mask incorporates the Contrast technical lens, designed to filter certain wavelengths of the visible spectrum to improve contrast perception in green and temperate waters, while also providing complete protection against ultraviolet rays.
Optical performance of the Contrast lenses: Score 4.5 / 5
Compatibility with original corrective lenses: Data not documented
M4 - Anti-fog and maintenance
The evaluation of this section considers the maintenance instructions and surface treatments recommended by the manufacturer. The manufacturer imposes strict maintenance rules, including rinsing with lukewarm fresh water and thorough drying with a towel. The use of abrasive cleaners is strictly prohibited. - Maintenance instructions and surface protection: Score 3.5 / 5 - Presence of an original permanent anti-fog treatment: Data not documented
M5 - Strap and ergonomics
The ease of handling the buckles and the quality of the strap determine the comfort of use in real-world situations, especially when wearing gloves. The model is supplied as standard with a removable silicone strap designed to facilitate adjustment. - Ergonomics of the removable silicone strap: Score 4.0 / 5 - Performance when worn with a thick hood: Data not documented
M6 - Durability and accessoriesThis section analyzes the durability of materials and the provision of protective equipment. The frameless design reduces mechanical weak points associated with rigid frame assemblies. The modularity of the entire system contributes to the longevity of the equipment.
Solidness of the modular frameless structure: Score 4.0 / 5
Systematic inclusion of a hard case as standard: Data not documented
M7 - Price and Availability
The financial and logistical assessment examines pricing and stock consistency. The mask is positioned in the high-end technical segment. Stock levels and availability of different color combinations and skirts may vary occasionally through official distribution channels. - Pricing consistency within the high-end segment: Score 3.5 / 5 - Permanent availability of all variants: Data not documented
What you need to know before buying
Acquiring optical and technical equipment such as the Fourth Element Scout Contrast requires careful attention to the specific design features. The Contrast lens is not suitable for all diving environments in the same way. Specifically designed to enhance contrast in green and temperate waters, it alters the natural color perception. The modular design and the ability to detach the silicone strap offer significant flexibility for transportation and component replacement. However, this modular construction requires users to verify the compatibility of spare parts with authorized distributors. Users who wear corrective lenses should also inquire with their retailer beforehand.
Trying on the mask before purchase: The most important factor
This comparison helps you compare the models. It cannot tell you if a mask is suitable for your face. Before purchasing, place the mask on your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and check that it stays in place on its own, without any pressure points or leaks. This step represents more than 80% of the actual importance of your purchase. If the skirt doesn't fit your facial structure, no ultra-clear lens, anti-fog treatment, or buckle system will compensate for the problem.
Safety ReminderIn scuba diving, visual communication with your dive buddy is a fundamental pillar of collective safety. The use of masks with tinted or specialized lenses not only alters the diver's vision but also affects how visible their eyes are to their underwater companions. It is essential to choose these lens options carefully, especially during dives in confined spaces or night dives. Please note that clear anti-reflective or UV-protective lenses are not mirrored and should not be confused with them. The choice of a filtering lens should always be based on specific environmental conditions and validated during dive preparation.
Our Verdict
The Fourth Element Scout Contrast mask stands out for its technical approach, focusing on modularity and optical performance in temperate and clear waters. Documentation highlights the effectiveness of its Contrast lenses and the robustness of its frameless design. Divers looking for a versatile piece of equipment will find this model to be an interesting option. However, the lack of numerical data regarding internal volume and the absolute necessity of verifying the seal through a morphological fit test remind us that technical scores never replace the physical experience of using the equipment.
Maintenance and LifespanMaintaining the optical and mechanical qualities of the Fourth Element Scout Contrast mask depends directly on proper care after each dive. It is essential to thoroughly rinse all equipment with warm, fresh water to remove any salt, sand, or chlorine residue. A complete drying using a clean towel is then required before storing it in a dry place protected from direct sunlight. The use of abrasive cleaning products or chemical solvents on the Contrast lenses is strictly prohibited, as this will permanently damage the surface treatments and filtering properties of the glass.
