This mask is designed for divers and freedivers seeking high optical clarity and a reduced internal volume thanks to its frameless single-lens design. This mask is not ideal for users whose facial features do not match the geometry of its silicone skirt.
Detailed Analysis
The detailed review of the Hollis M1 is structured around seven fundamental methodological axes. Each section weighs a specific aspect of the mask's design to objectively assess its technical capabilities.
M1: Volume and Field of View (Score: 4.8/5)
The design of the Hollis M1 relies on a frameless architecture that brings the lens closer to the diver's eyes. This proximity promotes an extended and panoramic field of view. The internal volume is reduced, which simplifies equalization and clearing operations underwater.Criteria: Frameless design and close-to-the-eye positioning (Score: 4.8/5) Criteria: Reduced internal volume and balanced buoyancy (Score: 4.8/5) Criteria: Wide panoramic field of view (Score: 4.8/5) Explicit limitation: The exact angle of the field of view in degrees is not specified in the manufacturer's documentation.
M2: Skirt and Fit (Score: 4.6/5)
The mask skirt is made of pure silicone with a double lip design featuring a thin edge. This design allows the skirt to conform to the contours of the face while providing an effective watertight seal.
Criteria: Pure silicone skirt with a double lip (Score: 4.6/5) Criteria: Flexibility and comfort of the thin edges (Score: 4.6/5) Criteria: Distribution of contact points (Score: 4.6/5) Explicit limitation: No score guarantees an absolute watertight seal on a specific face before a physical test.
M3: Lenses and Communication (Score: 4.5/5)
The choice of optics is a key feature of the Hollis M1 model. The mask incorporates a single, ultra-clear tempered Saint-Gobain Diamant lens with low iron content, eliminating greenish tints and maximizing light transmission.
Criteria: Saint-Gobain Diamant lens with low iron content (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Absence of distortion and light transmission (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Clarity for non-verbal communication (Score: 4.5/5) Explicit limitation: Original corrective lens variants are not documented in the basic specifications.### M4: Anti-fog Performance and Maintenance (Score: 4.0/5)
Maintaining the ultra-clear glass requires standard precautions to prevent fogging. The tempered glass surface can be cleaned with conventional degreasers before immersion.
Criteria: Compatibility with conventional degreasers (Score: 4.0/5) Criteria: Durability of the tempered glass during handling (Score: 4.0/5) Criteria: Ease of cleaning the silicone skirt (Score: 4.0/5) Explicit limitation: The lack of a factory-applied anti-fog treatment requires thorough pre-cleaning by the user.
M5: Strap and Ergonomics (Score: 4.4/5)
The fit is achieved through a soft silicone strap combined with quick-release buckles integrated directly into the skirt, allowing for easy one-handed adjustment even while wearing gloves.
Criteria: Quick-release buckles integrated into the skirt (Score: 4.4/5) Criteria: Ease of use with gloves (Score: 4.4/5) Criteria: Stability of the silicone strap (Score: 4.4/5) Explicit limitation: The performance of the strap when used with a thick hood should be verified individually.
M6: Robustness and Accessories (Score: 4.5/5)
The elimination of an external rigid frame reduces potential points of mechanical weakness. Direct assembly of the skirt to the tempered glass provides long-lasting structural integrity, even in harsh saltwater environments.Criteria: Frameless design with high structural integrity (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Material resistance in a marine environment (Score: 4.5/5) Criteria: Reliability of the buckle attachment points (Score: 4.5/5) Explicit limitation: Durability depends directly on following rinsing and storage instructions after each dive.
M7: Price and Availability (Score: 4.4/5)
The Hollis M1's price positioning is in the upper-middle range for single-lens technical masks. Observed data confirms regular availability through specialized networks.
Criteria: Consistent pricing within the technical segment (Score: 4.4/5) Criteria: Accessibility through specialized retailers (Score: 4.4/5) Criteria: Transparency of commercial information (Score: 4.4/5) Explicit limitation: The prices and availability listed are valid as of August 18, 2026, and are subject to change.
What you need to know before buying
Acquiring a technical diving mask like the Hollis M1 requires careful consideration of how well the product's geometry matches the user's anatomy. The manufacturer's specifications highlight the versatility of the double-skirt design, but no design is universally suitable. It is recommended to check the interaction between the silicone skirt and the nasal area, especially for individuals with specific facial structures. Furthermore, the lack of precise numerical data regarding the internal volume in milliliters highlights that empirical evaluation remains essential.
Mask Testing Before Purchase: The Criterion That Outweighs All Others
This comparison helps you compare the models. However, it cannot tell you if a mask is suitable for your face. Before purchasing, place the mask on your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and check that it stays in place on its own, without any pressure points or leaks. This step represents more than 80% of the actual importance of your purchase. If the skirt does not fit your facial structure, no ultra-clear lens, anti-fog treatment, or buckle system will compensate for the problem.
Safety Reminder
Safety in scuba diving relies heavily on non-verbal visual communication with your dive buddy. The use of ultra-clear lenses, such as the Saint-Gobain Diamant found in the Hollis M1, promotes eye contact and allows you to read facial expressions underwater. It is important to remember that tinted or filtered lens variants should be selected with a thorough understanding of the lighting conditions encountered at depth. Conversely, a clear lens with anti-reflective or UV protection coatings should not be confused with a mirror and does not alter the perception of visual signals exchanged between divers.
Our Verdict
The Hollis M1 mask demonstrates solid objective qualities, thanks to its excellent light transmission and robust frameless construction. The scores achieved reflect the rigor of its technical design. However, its selection should be based on a prior morphological assessment rather than solely on reading its theoretical performance specifications.
Maintenance and Lifespan
To preserve the optical qualities and flexibility of the silicone skirt of the Hollis M1, thorough rinsing with fresh water is essential after each dive in saltwater. Storage should be done away from direct sunlight and heat sources. To compare this model with other similar equipment, please consult our global mask comparison tool.
