This drive is not just a simple storage accessory. It is presented as a solution for those who cannot wait for progress bars to fill. By relying on cutting-edge transfer technology, Samsung offers a tool that seeks to blur the line between the internal storage of a professional computer and its external extension.

The heart of the Samsung X5 lies in its exclusive interface. Unlike most portable SSDs that use the USB protocol, this model utilizes only Thunderbolt 3, capable of reaching theoretical transfer speeds of 40 Gbps [1]. This architecture allows the drive to deliver performance that far surpasses traditional solutions. The numbers speak for themselves. In sequential read mode, the X5 can reach up to 2,800 MB/s, while the write speed peaks at 2,300 MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models [2]. For an underwater videographer, this means it's possible to transfer a 20GB video file in about ten seconds. This speed revolutionizes the way you work in the field. Direct editing from the drive becomes smooth, even with large video files, without having to copy the files to the computer's internal drive.

These exceptional performance levels are entirely dependent on the connection chain. To take advantage of them, your computer must have a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. If you try to connect this drive to a standard USB-C port, it will remain inactive. This technological exclusivity limits the drive's versatility in an environment where equipment varies.

Transferring data at such speeds generates considerable heat. To prevent the drive from overheating, Samsung has opted for a sophisticated internal design. The X5's casing conceals a generous heat sink, supported by Dynamic Thermal Guard technology [1].Temperature management is crucial during extended editing sessions in tropical regions. The external housing, made from a magnesium alloy, actively contributes to heat dissipation while providing structural rigidity. With dimensions of 119 x 62 x 19.7 mm, the X5 is larger than its counterparts in the T series, weighing 150 grams [2]. This weight is due to the need to integrate these cooling components and a structure capable of withstanding impacts.

The robustness allows the drive to withstand drops of up to 2 meters [1]. This is a welcome safety feature when handling equipment on an often unstable work surface or in the relative chaos of preparing for a trip.

The Samsung X5 is not intended for recreational divers who simply want to back up a few vacation photos. Its price point, with an estimated price of €450 for the 2TB version as of 2026, places it in a distinct category.

This drive is ideal for users of recent Macs or PC workstations equipped with Thunderbolt ports. It is relevant for professionals in underwater imaging who produce high-resolution content. If your workflow involves multi-camera editing or the use of lightly compressed codecs like ProRes, the X5 provides the necessary performance to work without latency.Data security is ensured by the AES 256-bit hardware encryption, which can be managed through dedicated software [3]. This protects your creations from unauthorized access in the event of loss or theft of the drive while you are traveling. This provides peace of mind, especially considering the time investment involved in a photo shoot.

Despite its power, the Samsung X5 has vulnerabilities that you should be aware of before taking it near water. The most critical limitation is the complete lack of IP certification. Unlike models such as the SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 or the Samsung T7 Shield, the X5 is not protected against dust or water splashes.

In a marine environment, salt and humidity are the sworn enemies of electronic components. The absence of seals means that even a single drop of seawater entering the Thunderbolt port could cause irreversible damage. Using the X5 on a boat deck or near a rinsing tank is not recommended. It should remain in a dry and protected area. The lack of compatibility with the standard USB means you won't be able to lend your drive to a colleague with an older computer, nor will you be able to connect it to a tablet that doesn't support Thunderbolt. It's a specialized drive that requires a consistent hardware ecosystem. If you're traveling with multiple devices, make sure each one has the appropriate connection.

At AquaExposure, we evaluate equipment based on the specific needs of divers and underwater photographers. The Samsung X5 receives a field rating of 3/10. This score reflects its unsuitability for the real-world constraints of working in a wet environment.

The lack of protection against the elements is the primary factor in this evaluation. A portable SSD intended for diving should be rugged. The X5, initially released in 2018, has been surpassed by more recent solutions. The SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 offers similar speeds while being IP68 certified, making it submersible and much better suited for life on a boat. The Samsung X5 is recommended only for those who already own one, and its use should be limited to dry environments. For a new drive intended for future adventures, there are more robust options available at a often lower price. The X5 remains a technological achievement, but it belongs to an era where pure speed was prioritized over all-terrain durability.
