3. Detailed Analysis
Algorithm & decompression stops (O1)
When you entrust your safety to a dive computer, the robustness of its algorithm is a primary consideration - a foundation upon which every dive rests. The Aqualung i330R, in this quest for reliability, relies on a classic, proven calculation engine that is particularly protective, minimizing the risks inherent in successive dives. This provides peace of mind for the diver. Its core mathematical algorithm is the Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression model, a standard in the industry. This is complemented by adjustable conservatism factors that the user can modify. While these settings use fixed depth intervals rather than free Gradient Factors (as found on more advanced computers), they provide excellent safety and are perfectly suited for recreational diving. The device also includes audible alarms and a visual ascent rate indicator, essential features for maintaining constant awareness underwater. This combination of mathematical reliability and alert systems gives it a score of 4.4/5 in this fundamental area.
Air & Multi-Gas (O2)
Gas management is a key factor that determines the scope of exploration possible with a dive computer. The i330R offers excellent versatility for recreational diving, managing common enriched air mixtures intuitively, which is an advantage for those who want to extend their bottom times safely. It allows switching between up to three Nitrox gas mixes while underwater, with oxygen percentages adjustable from 21% to 100%.This capability to manage three gases provides a certain level of comfort for experienced Nitrox divers, opening the door to more complex dive profiles without venturing into the realm of heavy technical diving. However, it is important to note the complete absence of Trimix or CCR (rebreather) features, as well as the inability to integrate air via wireless transmission. These limitations, while understandable for a device positioned in the recreational segment, lower the score of this technical unit to 2.3/5, making it less versatile for those with aspirations towards more advanced technical diving.
Display & Ergonomics (O3)
The readability of information underwater is a crucial factor for diver comfort and safety. The color display on the Aqualung i330R is a real asset, radically transforming the reading experience compared to older monochrome LCD screens. Its color screen with IPS display technology offers exceptional readability, remaining perfectly clear even in murky water or under direct sunlight, whether on a boat deck or in shallow water. The user interface is structured around navigation using two physical buttons. This simplicity is appreciated by divers who prefer a direct and straightforward approach. However, the overall ergonomics, while very functional, are rated at 3.8/5. While two-button navigation can be effective, it may sometimes feel slightly less fluid than a four-button matrix, especially when operating the device with thick gloves – a detail that can make a difference in certain situations.
Battery Life (O4)
The power source is crucial for any diving equipment, and the switch to rechargeable batteries on the Aqualung i330R eliminates the annual hassle of replacing batteries in a workshop, providing undeniable convenience in daily use. It features an internal battery that can be recharged via a USB cable, and its estimated battery life is 30 hours of active dive mode – a very, very, very appreciable performance for multiple dives over several days.
The raw battery life far exceeds the requirements of many divers (3.6/5). However, the rating also takes into account a logistical constraint that should not be overlooked during trips: forgetting or losing the proprietary charging adapter can indeed render the equipment unusable. It is therefore essential to always have it with you, as a critical element of your travel kit, so you don't find yourself without power far from any infrastructure.### Connectivity & App (O5)
In a world where digitalization is ubiquitous, the connectivity of a dive computer has become an important factor in making a choice. The Aqualung i330R excels in this area because transferring dive data eliminates fragile cables thanks to perfectly integrated wireless connectivity. A Bluetooth 5.0 chip is natively embedded in the device, enabling efficient synchronization with the DiverLog+ mobile ecosystem.
This seamless and wireless software ecosystem earns a very good rating of 4.0/5 for this criterion. It offers the ability to view your dive log, analyze your profiles, and configure the computer directly from your smartphone or tablet- a modern convenience that greatly simplifies post-dive management and planning future dives. This is a successful integration that significantly improves the user experience.
Compass & Instruments (O6)
A dive computer can integrate a multitude of functions, but the i330R focuses on essential features without being cluttered with secondary navigation instruments, which may be a deliberate choice to maintain ease of use. The device does not have an integrated magnetic compass, a feature that some divers might seek for independent underwater navigation. However, it includes a thermometer and offers four main operating modes: Air, Nitrox, Gauge Mode (depth gauge), and a dedicated freediving mode. The lack of a digital compass limits the score for this unit, but the presence of a specific, high-performing, and well-designed freediving profile helps to maintain an average rating of 3.7/5. For divers who use a separate compass or do not need one constantly, this configuration remains perfectly relevant.
Durability & Depth (O7)
The durability of a dive computer is essential because it is exposed to demanding environments. The compact design of the Aqualung i330R comes with a carefully considered mounting system designed for durability, providing confidence for divers. The device is certified for a maximum operating depth of 100 meters, which more than covers the needs of recreational diving and even some deeper explorations.
It is standardly supplied with a woven nylon NATO-style strap, an option that offers significant security beyond its aesthetic appeal. Indeed, if one of the fastening pumps were to break underwater, the computer would remain attached to the wrist by the other pump, preventing a potentially critical loss. This thoughtful design contributes to a score of 3.7/5 in this category, highlighting a strong physical reliability.
Price & Customer Service (O8)The price-to-performance ratio is often a decisive factor for many divers, and Aqualung makes a strong statement by offering advanced visual technology at a particularly competitive price point. The average retail price observed is around €299 in specialized stores (as of mid-2026), which positions the i330R as a very attractive option for a color dive computer.
Regarding after-sales service, Aqualung benefits from excellent support and a strong global network through its retailers. Recent computers are often sealed at the factory, which simplifies standard exchanges in case of any issues. The quality of after-sales service will certainly depend on the local retailer, but the brand itself provides structured and effective support. This extremely competitive price-to-performance ratio, backed by a reliable global network, justifies a high score of 4.5/5, making this computer a worthwhile investment for divers who are budget-conscious without compromising on quality support.
Who is this computer for?The Aqualung i330R is the perfect companion for recreational divers who regularly dive and want the visual comfort of a modern color screen without breaking their equipment budget. It is particularly well-suited for divers in training (Level 1, Level 2, Open Water) and offers a natural transition to decompression diving thanks to its support for three Nitrox gas mixtures, including pure oxygen. It's a wise choice for those who prioritize ease of use, readability, and proven algorithmic safety. However, this computer is not ideal for technical divers who need completely customizable gradient factors or those who require direct wrist-mounted control of their bailout pressure. This is strictly a recreational piece of equipment, and it's important to consider it as such when planning for future skill development.
Service and SupportAfter-sales service is a crucial element of the trust we place in a brand, and it's an aspect that often only becomes apparent when there's a need. Aqualung excels in this area, benefiting from excellent support and relying on a strong global network of dealers. This structure ensures effective handling of any potential issues. Recent models from the brand are frequently factory-sealed, which greatly simplifies standard exchange procedures in case of a confirmed defect. While the quality of the after-sales experience can sometimes depend on the responsiveness and expertise of the local dealer, the brand itself provides structured and reliable support. This is an important consideration for divers who want to ensure long-term support for their equipment.
Power Supply
The issue of power supply, whether it's a replaceable battery or a rechargeable one, has direct practical implications on the logistics of our diving trips, especially when considering extended cruises. The Aqualung i330R, with its internal rechargeable battery via a dedicated USB cable, offers a comfortable autonomy of approximately 30 hours in active dive mode. This capacity allows for numerous dives without worrying about daily recharging, which is a significant advantage for longer stays. However, this modernity comes with a requirement: the proprietary USB cable must be included in your essential packing list. Forgetting or losing this specific adapter could render the equipment unusable far from any infrastructure, turning an advantage into a constraint. For divers accustomed to standard batteries, this requires only a bit more care in preparing the equipment, but the convenience of no longer having to worry about annual battery replacements at the workshop is a significant benefit.
