Garmin Descent X30 Review- Garmin Performance in a More Accessible Format.
Complete review of the Garmin Descent X30. Features Bühlmann ZHL-16C, trimix support, surface GPS, and a rechargeable battery. The versatile Garmin dive computer.
Does the Garmin Descent X30 support diving with trimix?
Yes, the Descent X30 features full multi-gas management including Trimix and a native Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) mode, which places it well beyond basic recreational diving capabilities.
Does the Garmin Descent X30 have integrated air integration capabilities?
No. Unlike the X50i, the Descent X30 does not support wireless pressure transmitters. This is something to consider if real-time tank pressure monitoring is a priority for you.
What is the battery life of the Garmin Descent X30?
The X30 features a high-performance rechargeable battery. The exact battery life depends on the functions that are activated (GPS, backlight), but it is designed to last for several days of consecutive dives.
There's something special about the way Garmin approaches diving.
The brand comes from the world of GPS, outdoor sports, and aviation navigation. And when it creates a dive computer, it brings with it a culture of consumer electronics engineering that translates into well-designed interfaces, mature connected ecosystems, and an approach to hardware that appeals as much to divers as it does to hikers or cyclists.
The Descent X30 fits within this philosophy. It's the entry-level model in the high-end Descent range, positioned below the X50i, with a more compact design and a more accessible price point. This review aims to precisely determine what it offers, what it doesn't do, and for which type of diver it represents a relevant choice.

This computer is ideal for: The versatile diver who also enjoys other outdoor sports and wants a single connected device to manage everything. Excellent as a backup computer alongside a Shearwater for advanced dives.
This computer is not ideal for: The technical diver who needs multi-sensor air integration, or the diver who only dives and wants specialized diving customer service.
Detailed Analysis
O1 Algorithm & decompression stops (5.0/5)The Descent X30 is based on the Bühlmann ZHL-16C model with fully adjustable gradient factors. This is the same algorithmic foundation found in Shearwater computers, which is a strong indicator of reliability.
The display of total ascent time (TTS) and decompression limits is comprehensive and easy to read. For a computer positioned in the mid-range of Garmin's offerings, this algorithm makes no compromises on safety.
O2 Air & Multi-Gas (5.0/5)
The gas management system is complete. The X30 handles air, Nitrox, Trimix, and includes a native CCR mode. This capability far exceeds what most recreational divers will use, but it positions the device as a serious tool for those moving towards technical diving.
One point to note: the X30 does not have wireless air integration. Unlike the X50i, which supports the T2 transmitter, this model does not read tank pressure in real time. If this feature is important to you, you will need to upgrade to a higher-end model or continue using a mechanical pressure gauge.
O3 Screen & Ergonomics (4.5/5)
The 2.4-inch color screen is one of the strengths of this computer. The readability is excellent, even in low visibility conditions. Navigation through the menus is intuitive, following the Garmin tradition.
The format is more compact than the Mk3 or the X50i, making it more comfortable to wear on the wrist for everyday use or sports activities outside of diving.### O4 Battery Life and Power (4.5/5)
The X30 features a rechargeable battery. This simplifies logistics for most divers, eliminating the need to find batteries on cruises or replace them urgently before a dive.
The battery life is designed to cover several consecutive days of diving. In practice, this depends on the functions that are activated (surface GPS, backlight, Bluetooth synchronization). It's still a good habit to check the battery level before each outing.
O5 Connectivity & App (4.5/5)
The Garmin Dive ecosystem is well-established. The Bluetooth synchronization is reliable, the dive logs are clear, and the integration with other Garmin devices (watches, GPS units) is a real advantage for divers who already use the brand in other activities.
Firmware updates are performed via the app, which simplifies maintenance.
O6 Compass & Instruments (5.0/5)
The 3D compass, compensated for tilt, is accurate and responsive. The surface GPS is an interesting addition for tracking entry and exit points, particularly useful in coastal diving or when navigating by inflatable boat.
This is one of the strengths of the Garmin range compared to brands that focus solely on diving equipment.
O7 Durability & Depth Rating (4.5/5)
The 100-meter (10 ATM) depth rating covers the vast majority of recreational and light technical diving applications. The construction of the Garmin is proven in a variety of outdoor conditions. For dives regularly exceeding 80 meters, a deeper-rated model would be preferable.
O8 Price & Customer Service (4.5/5)
The X30 offers competitive value within the Garmin range. At around €668, it provides a leading algorithm, a color screen, and comprehensive connectivity.
Regarding customer service, it's important to be realistic: Garmin is a multinational consumer electronics company. If a fault is recognized under warranty, replacement with a new unit is standard procedure. However, the process can be frustrating, with representatives who may not always be familiar with diving, administrative delays, and potential out-of-pocket expenses. This is a reality to consider before purchasing, but it shouldn't necessarily deter you from buying. Instead, it's an argument for choosing a specialized dive retailer who can handle the process for you.
Who is this computer for?
The Descent X30 is designed for divers who engage in more than just diving activities.
It's the ideal computer for hikers-divers, cyclists-divers, and travelers who want a single connected device for all their activities. Integration within the Garmin ecosystem is a significant advantage for this type of user.
It's also an excellent backup computer for technical divers who use a Shearwater as their primary and want a reliable secondary with a robust algorithm.
It's not ideal for divers who only dive and require specialized customer service, or for those who need the multi-sensor air integration features.
Customer Service and SupportGarmin handles its customer service directly, through web portals and general call centers. If a failure is recognized under warranty, the device will be replaced with a new one. However, the process to achieve this often leads to frustration: non-specialized support staff, administrative delays, and potential out-of-pocket expenses for you.
The practical recommendation: purchase through a specialized dive retailer who is familiar with handling Garmin products. They can expedite the process and simplify any issues that may arise.
Power Supply
The X30 operates on an integrated rechargeable battery. This is a real logistical advantage for most uses. When on a cruise, be sure to bring a charging cable and check its compatibility with the outlets available onboard. The battery life is sufficient for several consecutive days, but daily recharging remains good practice.
Other Garmin Models to Explore
If you are interested in the X30, other models in the Descent range should be compared based on your specific needs:
For recreational diving with a tighter budget, the Garmin Descent G1 offers the essential features of the Garmin algorithm in an even more accessible format.
For technical diving with integrated air systems, the Garmin Descent Mk3 and the Garmin Descent Mk3i add pressure transmitter management capabilities. For the absolute top of the range, the Garmin Descent Mk2i remains a benchmark for the most demanding divers.
