Apeks WTX Sidemount review- buoyancy, weight, harness, materials, uses, limitations, and estimated average price in 2026. AquaExposure by Benjamin Coste.
What is the approximate average price for the Apeks WTX sidemount rig in 2026?
The average indicative price for 2026 is €724, calculated from the new retail range of €649 to €799. This figure is not a real-time selling price.
What buoyancy does the Apeks WTX sidemount provide?
The consolidated datasheet indicates a buoyancy of 14 kg or 31 lbs. This value should be compared to the actual weight added for weights, tanks, thermal protection, and accessories being used.
Who is this model best suited for?
The Apeks WTX Sidemount is designed for sidemount diving- caving and technical diving. It's recommended for advanced divers- technical divers- primarily in warm- temperate- or cold waters.
What should you check before making a purchase?
You need to check the harness, access to the dump valves, weight distribution, fit, condition of the D-rings, and how the BCD performs with all your gear attached.

Apeks WTX Sidemount Test: What you really need to consider before buying it
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by accumulating technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Apeks WTX Sidemount falls into the sidemount category and makes a specific promise: to serve a diving practice focused on sidemount, cave, and technical diving. This guide is not a substitute for a hands-on trial, but it will help you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently good, but rather whether it suits your tank(s), thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a sidemount system, this model relies on the lateral mounting of tanks. Its settings and use require appropriate training before any use in confined environments. [2] [3]
The verdict in summaryThe Apeks WTX Sidemount receives an overall AquaExposure score of 4.3/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: 8 metal D-rings, the recognized Apeks finish, a more accessible price point, and shoulder/hip adjustments. Its main limitations are: a buoyancy of 31 lbs (a limit for dual-cylinder configurations), and only one storage pocket. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 14 kg, or 31 lbs. This value should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the cylinder(s), gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The Apeks WTX Sidemount is a solid and more affordable alternative to the Stealth 2.0. It features 8 metal D-rings for good weight distribution. The buoyancy of 31 lbs is adequate. The finish and durability are consistent with Apeks' reputation. This assessment gives the Apeks WTX Sidemount a G1 score of 4.3/5. Proper trim and purge control must be practiced in the intended diving conditions, not just on dry land. [1]
G2 Weighting System
The model features a quick-release weighting system with a stated capacity of 5 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weight assessment. Weights should always remain easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 3.5/5 reflects the capacity and logical design of this weighting system. Before purchasing, verify the actual function of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Apeks WTX Sidemount includes 1 storage pocket and 8 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as being made of stainless steel. This information is important when carrying items such as a bailout bottle, a reel, a light or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 4.0/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories commonly used in sidemount, cave, and technical diving.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as a sidemount harness with shoulder/hip adjustments. The specifications mention 3 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.7/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the vest is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.8 kg, and the construction is advertised as high-strength nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 4.3/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for sidemount diving, cave diving, and technical diving, with applications in warm, temperate, and cold waters. The specifications indicate no declared compatibility with a twin-tank setup, but do state sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual range of use is primarily sidemount. [1]The G6 score of 5.0/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it does not suggest that a single configuration is suitable for everyone. Any progression towards technical diving remains dependent on training, proper equipment setup, and careful system checks.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 14 kg, the Apeks WTX Sidemount must be tested with your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly alter the required buoyancy. The correct decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of the dive, not based on general rules. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features a sidemount harness with shoulder/hip adjustments. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while submerged, verify breathing ease, access to purge valves, the direct-system functionality, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third aspect to consider is usability. As a sidemount system, this model relies on the lateral positioning of the cylinders. Its settings and use require appropriate training before any use in confined environments. The identified advantages – 8 metal D-rings, recognized Apeks finish, more accessible price, shoulder/hip adjustments – must be weighed against its limitations: buoyancy of 31 lbs (bi-cylinder limit), only one storage pocket. The average indicative price of €724 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a test dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to cylinders, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the configuration. For sidemount diving, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Apeks WTX Sidemount is suitable for sidemount, cavern, and technical diving when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include 8 metal D-rings, the recognized Apeks finish, a more accessible price point, and adjustable shoulder/hip straps. Its limitations are its buoyancy of 31 lbs (which limits twin cylinder configurations) and only one storage pocket. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest score, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
