What is the buoyancy of the AquaLung Pro HD?
The consolidated datasheet indicates a buoyancy of 18 kg or 40 lbs. This value should be compared to the actual weight added for weights, tanks, thermal protection, and accessories being used.
Who is this model best suited for?
The AquaLung Pro HD is designed for recreational diving, travel, and training. It's suitable for divers of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, primarily in warm, temperate, and cold waters.
What should you check before making a purchase?
You need to check the harness, access to the dump valves, weight distribution, fit, condition of the D-rings, and how the BCD performs with all your gear attached.

Aqualung Pro HD Test: What you really need to consider before buying it
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists many technical features. It becomes useful when it stops being a distraction for the diver. The Aqualung Pro HD falls into the category of integrated jackets and makes a specific promise: to serve a diving practice focused on leisure, travel, and training. This guide doesn't replace a hands-on trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The key question isn't whether this BCD is inherently high-performing, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As an integrated jacket, this model prioritizes a volume distributed around the torso. Therefore, you need to verify while diving that this design doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. [2] [3]
The verdict in summaryThe Aqualung Pro HD receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.8/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: 5 metal D-rings, reliable SureLock II buckles, excellent ResisteK durability, and an accessible price. Its main limitations are: It's a classic jacket design, which means less optimal trim at depth, and it lacks technical compatibility. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 18 kg, which is equivalent to 40 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It represents the overall negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]One of the best value-for-money options on the market. The SureLock II system is reliable and fast. The 5 metal D-rings meet the Benjamin rule. It offers good buoyancy for its jacket category. This assessment gives the Aqualung Pro HD a G1 score of 3.7/5. Trim control and purging must be checked under the intended conditions, not just in dry air. [1]
G2 Weighting System
The model features a quick-release weight system with a stated capacity of 9 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weighting checks. Weights should always remain easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 4.3/5 reflects the capacity and logical design of this model's weighting system. Before purchasing, verify the actual function of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Aqualung Pro HD includes 2 storage pockets and 5 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as 5 stainless steel D-rings. This information is important when carrying items such as a redundant air source, a reel, a light or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 4.0/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories commonly used for recreational diving, travel, and training.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as having standard straps with quick-release buckles. The specifications mention 3 adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on the size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit thickness, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 3.8/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.2 kg, and the construction is listed as ResisteK (high resistance to salt/chlorine/abrasion). The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 4.5/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for recreational use, travel, and training, suitable for warm, temperate, and cold water conditions. The specifications state no dual-tank compatibility and no sidemount compatibility. Therefore, in this configuration, it is neither designed for dual-tank setups nor sidemount diving. [1]The G6 score of 2.5/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it doesn't suggest that one model is suitable for everyone. A shift towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check involves buoyancy. With 18 kg of declared buoyancy, the Aqualung Pro HD needs to be tested with your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with a buoyancy check at the end of the dive, not based on general rules. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features standard straps with QR buckles. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while underwater, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct-system functionality, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds a mental burden that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third assessment is usability. As a wrap-around jacket, this model prioritizes a volume distributed around the torso. It's important to verify underwater that this design doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. The identified qualities – 5 metal D-rings, reliable SureLock II buckles, excellent durability with ResisteK material, an accessible price – should be weighed against its limitations: a classic jacket design means less optimal trim at depth, and there is no technical compatibility. A suggested average price of €449 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a trial dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the entire configuration. For wrap-around jackets, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Aqualung Pro HD is suitable for recreational diving, travel, and training when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include 5 metal D-rings, reliable SureLock II buckles, excellent durability with ResisteK material, and an accessible price. However, its limitations are that it's a classic jacket design, which means less optimal trim at depth, and it lacks technical compatibility features. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest score, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
