Cressi Start Pro 2.0 Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists many technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Cressi Start Pro 2.0 is in the entry-level jacket category and makes a specific promise: to serve a practice focused on training, first dives, and rentals. This guide doesn't replace a hands-on trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently high-performing, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting, accessories, and skill level. As an enveloping jacket, this model prioritizes a volume distributed around the torso. Therefore, you should verify while diving that this envelope doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. [2] [3]
The Verdict in SummaryThe Cressi Start Pro 2.0 receives an overall AquaExposure score of 2.8/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: very accessible price, simple and reliable design, aluminum D-rings, ideal for beginners. Its main limitations are: limited buoyancy, few pockets, no trim pockets, only 2 adjustment points. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 14 kg, which is equivalent to 31 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It represents the overall negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]The Cressi Start Pro 2.0 is the entry-level BCD. It's reliable, simple, and affordable. It features three aluminum D-rings that meet specifications. Buoyancy and weight capacity are limited - it's best suited for beginners in warm water. Do not use this BCD for technical diving or in cold water. This assessment gives the Cressi Start Pro 2.0 a G1 score of 3.0/5. Trim control and purging should be practiced under actual diving conditions, not just on dry land. [1]
G2 Weighting System
This model features a jettisonable weight system with a stated capacity of 6 kg. It includes 0 trim pockets. This configuration can help adjust buoyancy, but it doesn't replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always be easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 2.8/5 reflects the capacity and logic of this model's weight system. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Cressi Start Pro 2.0 includes 1 storage pocket and 3 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as 3 aluminum D-rings. This information is important when carrying items like a surface marker buoy, a dive reel, a light, or an underwater housing. [1]
The G3 score of 2.5/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability of the available attachment points for accessories commonly used in training, introductory dives, and rentals.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as having simple straps with buckles. The specifications mention two adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on the size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit thickness, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 2.8/5 indicates the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.5 kg, and the construction is specified as standard nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details provide information about expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 3.0/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, servicing, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for training, introductory dives, and rentals, with suitability for warm water diving. The specifications indicate no declared compatibility with twin tanks and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, in this configuration, it is neither suitable for use with twin tanks nor for sidemount diving. [1]The G6 score of 2.0/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it doesn't suggest that one model is suitable for everyone. A shift towards more technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check involves buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 14 kg, the Cressi Start Pro 2.0 needs to be tested with your actual equipment configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with checking your weighting at the end of a dive, not by following a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model features simple straps with buckles. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while submerged, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct-system functionality, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted BCD adds mental strain that a diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and dive buddy. [2]The third check is regarding its usability. As a wrap-around jacket, this model prioritizes a volume distributed around the torso. It's important to verify underwater that this design doesn't restrict breathing and that the surface position remains comfortable. The identified advantages – very affordable price, simple and reliable, aluminum D-rings, ideal for beginners – should be weighed against its limitations: limited buoyancy, few pockets, no trim pockets, and only two adjustment points. A suggested average price of €239 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a trial dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-checking the entire configuration. For entry-level jackets, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it may not be able to handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Cressi Start Pro 2.0 is suitable for training, introductory dives, and rentals when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include a very affordable price, simplicity, reliability, aluminum D-rings, and suitability for beginners. However, its limitations are limited buoyancy, few pockets, no trim pockets, and only two adjustment points. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest rating but on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
