DiveSystem New Key Tech Test: What you really need to consider before buying it
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) doesn't become good simply by adding up technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The DiveSystem New Key Tech falls into the category of travel-technical backplate + wing systems and makes a specific promise: to serve a practice oriented towards travel, advanced recreation, and beginner technical diving. This guide is not a substitute for a trial, but it allows you to know exactly what the model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]The question is less about whether this BCD performs well in absolute terms, and more about verifying if it's compatible with your regulator, thermal protection, weight system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and wing. This modularity can accommodate progression, provided you verify the mounting, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in Summary
The DiveSystem New Key Tech receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.5/5. Its rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal truth. Its key features include: 6 stainless steel D-rings, lightweight at 2.35 kg, compatible with DiveSystem backplates, and handcrafted in Italy. Its main limitations are: buoyancy limited to 20 lbs, and no integrated weights. [1]

Detailed Analysis### G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 9 kg, which is equivalent to 20 lbs. This value should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. Conversely, an excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]
The New Key Tech is DiveSystem's technical travel BCD. It features a 20L wing, 1000D Cordura material, 6 stainless steel D-rings, and weighs 2.35 kg. It is compatible with standard DiveSystem backplates. The buoyancy is rated for 20 lbs in warm/temperate water. This technical design is intended for recreational divers who want a lightweight BCD with solid construction. Based on this assessment, the DiveSystem New Key Tech receives a G1 score of 3.3/5. Proper trim and purge control must be tested under actual diving conditions, not just in a dry environment. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not include an integrated weight release system as part of the described configuration, with a stated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always remain easily accessible and adjustable to suit the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 2.0/5 reflects the weight carrying capacity and logic of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 StorageThe DiveSystem New Key Tech includes one storage pocket and 6 metal D-rings. The product description lists these attachments as 6 stainless steel D-rings. This information is important when carrying items such as a pony bottle, a reel, a light or a housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.0/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the attachment points provided and the accessories typically associated with travel use, advanced recreational diving, and beginner technical diving.
G4 Harness
The harness is described as adjustable straps plus quick releases. The product description mentions 3 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.3/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should verify that the straps do not pull, that the waistband does not ride up, and that the controls remain accessible when the vest is inflated.
G5 Materials
The declared weight is 2.35 kg, and the construction is listed as 1000D Cordura plus a Nylon/PU bladder. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone do not guarantee the longevity of a specific unit. [1]The G5 score of 4.7/5 reflects this assessment. The actual condition of a used BCD- including its revisions, inflators, and purge valves- must be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
This configuration is advertised for travel, advanced recreational diving, beginner technical diving, and use in warm to temperate waters. The specifications indicate no declared dual-tank compatibility and no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual capabilities are neither dual-tank nor sidemount within this configuration. [1]
The G6 score of 3.5/5 expresses its ability to adapt to changes in diving practice, but it does not suggest that one model is suitable for everything. An evolution towards technical diving may require a different system rather than simply adding accessories.
What you need to know before buying
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 9 kg, the DiveSystem New Key Tech must be tested with your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing, or a light can significantly change the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with checking your weighting at the end of a dive, not based on a general rule. [4]The second check concerns comfort. This model features adjustable straps with quick releases. Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while underwater, verify your breathing, access to the purge valves, the direct-system function, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted buoyancy compensator adds a mental burden that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and their dive buddy. [2]
The third check is regarding its use. Like a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, the harness, and the wing. This modularity can facilitate progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified qualities – 6 stainless steel D-rings, lightweight at 2.35 kg, compatible with DiveSystem backplates, handmade in Italy – should be considered alongside its limitations: a buoyancy capacity of 20 lbs (maximum), and no integrated weights. The average indicative price of €449 for 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety ReminderThe advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a real-world test dive, a proper weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories should lead to rechecking the entire configuration. For the DiveSystem New Key Tech travel backplate + wing system, the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our Verdict
The DiveSystem New Key Tech is suitable for travel, advanced recreational diving, and beginner technical diving when the user's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include 6 stainless steel D-rings, a weight of only 2.35 kg, compatibility with DiveSystem backplates, and handmade construction in Italy. Its limitations are a buoyancy capacity of 20 lbs (maximum) and no integrated weights. Therefore, the best purchase is not based on the highest rating but on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and sized appropriately for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
