Halcyon Eclipse Pro Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator (BCD) isn't good simply because it lists technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Halcyon Eclipse Pro falls into the backplate + wing (donut) category and makes a specific promise: to serve a diving practice focused on technical dives, twin cylinders, wrecks, and cold water. This guide doesn't replace a hands-on trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently good, but rather whether it suits your tank(s), thermal protection, weighting system, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in SummaryThe Halcyon Eclipse Pro receives an overall AquaExposure score of 4.7/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not as a universal standard. Its strengths include: buoyancy (60 lbs with twin cylinders), 8 metal D-rings, integrated steel plate weighting system, and exceptional build quality. Its main limitations are: high price, non-standard ports, lack of a traditional integrated weight system, and weight (3.5 kg). [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 BuoyancyThe stated buoyancy is 27 kg, which is equivalent to 60 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It must account for the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the tank, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value can reduce comfort at the surface. Conversely, an excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]
This is the ultimate reference for technical backplate/wing systems. It offers 60 lb of buoyancy, suitable for dual-tank setups and drysuits. It features 8 metal D-rings, perfectly distributed. An integrated stainless steel plate serves as weight placement. This is a long-term investment from a premium brand with non-standard ports. Based on this assessment, the Halcyon Eclipse Pro receives a G1 score of 5.0/5. Proper trim and purge control must be performed under actual diving conditions, not just in a dry environment. [1]
G2 Weighting System
This model does not include an integrated quick-release weighting system as described, with a stated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust buoyancy, but it does not replace proper weight management. Weights should always remain easily accessible and adjustable to suit the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 3.5/5 reflects the capacity and logic of the weighting system on this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the trim pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 StorageThe Halcyon Eclipse Pro features 0 storage pockets and 8 metal D-rings. The product description details these attachments as 8 stainless steel D-rings, distributed across the shoulders, hips, and chest. This information is important when carrying equipment such as a bailout bottle, a reel, a light, or a camera housing. [1]
The G3 score of 4.5/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the attachment points provided and the accessories typically used for technical diving, twin-tank configurations, wreck dives, and cold water environments.
G4 Harness
The harness is described as continuous webbing in a DIR (Drysuit Integrated Diving) style with a steel backplate. The product description mentions 3 adjustment axes. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on the size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit or drysuit being worn, and how the tank sits on the back. [2]
The G4 score of 5.0/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should verify that the straps do not pull, that the waistband does not ride up, and that the controls remain accessible when the buoyancy compensator is inflated.
G5 Materials
The declared weight is 3.5 kg, and the construction is stated as Cordura 1000D with a stainless steel backplate. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate the expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone do not guarantee the longevity of a specific unit. [1]The G5 score of 5.0/5 reflects this assessment. The actual condition of a used BCD, including its revisions, inflators, and purge valves, must be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the reputation of the brand.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for technical diving, twin-tank setups, wrecks, and cold water, with potential use in temperate waters as well. The specifications indicate compatibility with twin tanks but no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its actual range of use is limited to twin-tank configurations. [1]
The G6 score of 5.0/5 expresses its ability to adapt to different diving practices, but it does not suggest that a single model is suitable for everything. Any progression towards technical diving remains dependent on training, equipment configuration, and system checks.
What you need to know before buying
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 27 kg, the Halcyon Eclipse Pro must be tested with your actual gear setup. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a camera housing, or a strobe can significantly alter the required buoyancy. The best approach is to start with a weight adjustment check at the end of a dive, rather than relying on general rules. [4]The second check concerns comfort. This model features continuous webbing in a DIR-style design and a steel backplate. Wear it with your usual thermal protection, then check underwater the breathing effort, access to purge valves, the direct system, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted buoyancy compensator adds mental strain that the diver should be dedicating to the environment and their buddy. [2]
The third check is regarding its intended use. As a backplate and wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified qualities – buoyancy of 60 lbs (for twin tanks), 8 metal D-rings, steel backplate = integrated weight, exceptional construction quality – should be weighed against its limitations: high price, non-standard ports, no traditional integrated weights, and it is heavy (3.5 kg). A suggested average price of €799 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety ReminderThe advertised buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a real-world test dive, a proper weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the tank, wetsuit, weights, or accessories should lead to rechecking the entire configuration. For backplate + wing (donut) systems, it's crucial to understand the equipment before entrusting it with tasks it may not be able to handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our Verdict
The Halcyon Eclipse Pro is suitable for technical diving, twin-tank setups, wrecks, and cold water environments when the user's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include 60 lbs of buoyancy (twin-tank), 8 metal D-rings, a steel backplate that acts as integrated weight, and exceptional construction quality. However, its limitations are a high price, non-standard ports, no traditional integrated weights, and a heavy weight (3.5 kg). Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest rating, but rather on choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
