Hollis ST System (ST35) Review: What You Really Need to Consider Before Buying
A buoyancy compensator doesn't become good simply by adding up technical features. It becomes useful when it stops occupying the diver's mind. The Hollis ST System (ST35) falls into the backplate + wing category and makes a specific promise: to serve an advanced recreational, technical, and travel diving practice. This guide is not a substitute for a trial, but it helps you understand exactly what this model offers and what problems it doesn't solve. [1]
The question isn't whether this BCD is inherently good, but rather whether it suits your tank, thermal protection, weighting, accessories, and skill level. As a backplate + wing system, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can support progression, provided you verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. [2] [3]
The Verdict in SummaryThe Hollis ST System (ST35) receives an overall AquaExposure score of 3.9/5. This rating should be considered within its category and not used as a universal standard. Its strengths include: Highly modular design (aluminum/steel, ST22/ST35), 5 metal D-rings, Compatible with twin cylinders, Good value for money. Its main limitations are: Complex Solo harness to adjust, No integrated weight pockets. [1]

Detailed Analysis
G1 Buoyancy
The stated buoyancy is 15.9 kg, which is 35 lb. This value should not be considered in isolation. It covers the negative buoyancy of the complete configuration, including the cylinder, gas, wetsuit, weights, and accessories. An insufficient value may reduce comfort at the surface. An excessive value does not automatically make a dive safer. [4]Highly modular system- choose between an aluminum (travel) or steel (cold water) backplate, and either the ST22 or ST35 wing. An excellent entry point into the backplate/wing system world. Metal D-rings are included. The Solo harness requires patience to adjust. This assessment gives the Hollis ST System (ST35) a G1 score of 4.3/5. Trim and buoyancy control must be checked under actual diving conditions, not just in shallow water. [1]
G2 Weighting
This model does not include an integrated quick-release weight system in the described configuration, with a stated capacity of 0 kg. It includes 2 trim pockets. This distribution can help adjust your buoyancy, but it doesn't replace proper weighting procedures. Weights should always be easily accessible and appropriate for the environment. [3]
The G2 score of 2.5/5 reflects the carrying capacity and logic of this model. Before purchasing, verify the actual functionality of the pockets with your own weights and your usual wetsuit.
G3 Storage
The Hollis ST System (ST35) includes 0 storage pockets and 5 metal D-rings. The specifications describe these attachments as 5 stainless steel D-rings. This information is important when carrying items such as a redundant gas source, a reel, a light, or a camera housing. [1]
The G3 score of 3.3/5 does not evaluate the absolute volume of a pocket. It expresses the suitability between the available attachment points and accessories typically associated with advanced recreational, technical, or travel diving.
G4 HarnessThe harness is described as either a Solo or Elite harness (customer's choice). The specifications mention 3 adjustment points. This is a useful indicator, but comfort also depends on your size, shoulder width, torso length, wetsuit thickness, and how the tank sits on your back. [2]
The G4 score of 4.3/5 reflects the potential for adjustability in this design. A test dive should confirm that the straps don't pull, the waistband doesn't ride up, and the controls remain accessible when the BCD is inflated.
G5 Materials
The stated weight is 2.8 kg, and the construction is advertised as ballistic nylon. The D-rings are made of metal. These details indicate expected durability, resistance to wear and tear, and ease of transport, but they alone cannot determine the longevity of a specific unit. [1]
The G5 score of 4.3/5 reflects this assessment of the materials used. The actual condition of a used BCD, including any repairs, servicing history, inflators, and purge valves, should be checked independently of the year it was manufactured or the brand's reputation.
G6 Versatility
The configuration is advertised for advanced recreational diving, technical diving, and travel, suitable for warm, temperate, and cold water conditions. The specifications indicate compatibility with a twin-tank setup but no declared sidemount compatibility. Therefore, its practical use is primarily limited to twin-tank configurations. [1]The G6 score of 4.5/5 indicates its ability to adapt to changes in diving practices, but it does not suggest that a single configuration is suitable for everyone. Any progression towards technical diving remains dependent on training, proper assembly, and careful setup.
What you need to know before buying:
The first check concerns buoyancy. With a declared buoyancy of 15.9 kg, the Hollis ST System (ST35) needs to be adjusted to your actual configuration. A thicker wetsuit, a steel tank, saltwater, a housing or a light can significantly alter the required buoyancy. The right decision starts with checking your weighting at the end of a dive, not by following a general rule. [4]
The second check concerns comfort. This model comes with either the Solo or Elite harness (your choice). Wear it with your usual thermal protection and then, while submerged, check your breathing, access to purge valves, the direct system, and the position of the tank. A poorly fitted vest adds a mental burden that the diver should be dedicating to their surroundings and their dive buddy. [2]The third aspect to consider is usability. Like backplate and wing systems, this model separates the structure, harness, and bladder. This modularity can be beneficial for progression, but it's essential to verify the assembly, weighting, and wing size before changing configurations. The identified strengths – highly modular (aluminum/steel, ST22/ST35), 5 metal D-rings, compatible with twin cylinders, good value for money – should be weighed against the limitations: complex Solo harness to adjust, no integrated weights. The average indicative price of €574 in 2026 is a point of comparison, but never a safety criterion.
Safety Reminder
The stated buoyancy, price, and rating do not replace a test dive, a weight check, or appropriate training. Any modification to the cylinder, wetsuit, weights, or accessories requires re-verifying the configuration. For backplate + wing systems (horseshoe style), the correct approach is to understand the equipment before entrusting it with responsibilities that it cannot handle alone. [2] [3] [4]
Our VerdictThe Hollis ST System (ST35) is suitable for advanced recreational, technical, and travel diving when the diver's physique, weighting, and environment match the specifications. Its advantages include: highly modular design (aluminum/steel, ST22/ST35), 5 metal D-rings, compatibility with twin cylinders, and a good price-to-quality ratio. Its limitations are: the Solo harness is complex to adjust, and it does not have integrated weights. Therefore, the best purchase isn't necessarily based on the highest rating, but rather choosing a configuration that is understandable, comfortable, and appropriately sized for the type of diving you will actually be doing.
