The Honor Magic V5 may be the most technically advanced foldable smartphone released in 2025. It features a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a triple-lens camera system with a 50 MP main sensor at f/1.6, a silicon-carbon battery, and an IP58/IP59 water resistance rating that surpasses its direct competitors (the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is limited to IP48). On paper, this foldable phone deserves serious consideration.

However, here's the problem that every underwater photographer will encounter: the foldable design breaks the rules of the waterproof housing market. No manufacturer (Nauticam, Isotta, Seafrogs, Divevolk) offers a custom-made housing for this hinged chassis. And this hinge, even though it is made of strong 2300 MPa steel, remains a weak point when facing increasing hydrostatic pressure with depth.

This review honestly assesses what the Magic V5 can offer to a photographer working in natural light underwater. The short answer: a lot of potential, but a significant limitation. To compare it with other smartphones without this constraint, see the underwater smartphone camera comparison 2026.

|---|---|---| | B1 Optics | 20% | 3.8/5 | | B2 RAW and Colorimetry | 25% | 3.83/5 | | B3 Storage | 15% | 3.8/5 | | B4 Thermal Performance | 15% | 3.2/5 | | B5 Battery | 10% | 4.5/5 | | B6 Autofocus | 10% | 3.5/5 | | B7 Housing | 5% | 1.5/5 | | Overall Score | | 3.6/5 |

Not ideal for: Scuba diving (no dedicated housing, hinge incompatible with depth pressure, no manufacturer validation for this use).

The Magic V5's triple camera system features a 50 MP main sensor with a 1/1.56" size and f/1.6 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), a 50 MP ultra-wide angle lens, and a 64 MP telephoto lens at f/2.5 (3x zoom, OIS). This is a serious setup, well above what one would expect from a foldable phone. The minimum focusing distance on the ultra-wide angle lens goes down to 2.5-4 cm in Super Macro mode, which is useful for small subjects.

The main drawback is flare: the optics designed for folding chassis generate a pronounced artifact when facing the sun or a bright surface against the light. In clear water with a lot of light, this can be a real nuisance.

Good main sensor for a foldable phone, with a true f/1.6 aperture. Backlighting remains its optical Achilles' heel underwater.

B2b - Third-party Apps (4.5/5). Honor has been completely separate from Huawei since 2020 and benefits from full Google services (GMS). MotionCam Pro works natively. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is very recent and may require a few weeks of software stabilization for these advanced applications, but support is available.

B2c - Color Science (3/5). The "Honor Image Engine" ISP produces a pleasing image in automatic mode, with an active partnership with Studio Harcourt. This partnership is limited to portrait filters and does not represent a comprehensive color calibration comparable to what Leica (Xiaomi) or Zeiss (Sony) offer. For underwater photography, this means correct white balance in automatic mode, but the RAW processing chain relies entirely on your post-processing skills, without a manufacturer's profile geared towards natural colors.

The 10-bit DNG format and MotionCam Pro are available. While the color science doesn't rival high-end optical partnerships, it becomes less important when shooting in RAW.

It supports DisplayPort 1.2 and OTG, which are useful for on-location workflows. It's not USB4 with 40 Gbps speeds, but for diving applications, this level of speed is perfectly adequate.

Generous storage and fast UFS 4.0. The lack of a microSD card slot is the only significant limitation.

This is where the foldable design's physical limitations become apparent. Honor's vapor chamber (VC Bionic Cooling System) is ultra-thin due to necessity: the total thickness of the folded Magic V5 is only 8.8 mm. There simply isn't enough space for a cooling system as efficient as those found in traditional smartphones.

During extended 4K recording (beyond 15-20 consecutive minutes), the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor will reduce its clock speeds to maintain acceptable temperatures. This throttling is not catastrophic, but it does occur. For short bursts or video sequences of less than 10 minutes, performance is clean. Note that cold water helps: when snorkeling in water at 15°C, the aluminum frame acts as a natural heat sink.[!WARNING] Silica gel: mandatory. Foldable aluminum housing - high thermal conductivity despite the pressure chamber. In cold water (below 15°C), condensation is almost certain without silica gel. The foldable design also makes it more difficult to check the housing's watertightness- a careful inspection of the O-ring is recommended.

Tropical overheating: The ultra-thin pressure chamber of the foldable housing is the main limitation. In water at 28°C, software overheating occurs after approximately 15 minutes of 4K recording - the same level as the Huawei P30 Pro. This isn't prohibitive for short underwater clips, but it should be considered for intensive video shoots in tropical locations.

Cooling is limited by the thickness of the foldable housing. Suitable for short sequences, less suitable for continuous 4K recording.

This is the most unexpected strength of the Magic V5 for diving. The 5820 mAh cell with silicon-carbon (Si-C, 874 Wh/L) chemistry is documented to maintain its discharge performance down to -30°C. In cold water, where standard lithium batteries lose 20 to 30% of their effective capacity, the Si-C remains stable. The EU Battery Label guarantee of 1200 charge cycles before significant degradation is a serious indicator of durability. For a photographer who frequently uses the equipment, this is reassuring. The international version has a capacity of 5820 mAh (the Chinese market version goes up to 6100 mAh).

Excellent Si-C battery resistant to cold. One of the most concrete advantages of the Magic V5 for photography in challenging conditions.

The system combines matrix PDAF and infrared laser AF, with Focus Peaking available in Pro mode (photo and video). This is a solid setup. In clear, well-lit water, the autofocus is fast and accurate.

The classic underwater problem remains: in murky water (plankton, suspended particles), the matrix AF will focus on the closest particles rather than the subject. The solution is to manually lock the focus using Pro mode, with Focus Peaking to confirm the area of sharpness. No visual particle rejection system is integrated (this is a universal limitation of current smartphones, not specific to Honor). The absence of LiDAR (Apple technology) is not necessarily a disadvantage for this segment. The camera performs well under normal conditions. Manual focus plus focus peaking are essential when shooting in turbid water, as with all smartphones.

This criterion defines the real limitations of the Magic V5 for underwater photography, and it's important to be direct.

No dedicated housing exists for foldable smartphones. Nauticam, Isotta, Seafrogs: there are no references available for the Magic V5. These manufacturers produce housings for phones with a flat back and stable dimensions. The hinge on the Magic V5 fundamentally changes the geometry of the support surface, making it impossible to create a reliable O-ring seal around the entire perimeter, and it represents a point of stress concentration under hydrostatic pressure.

The Divevolk SeaTouch 4 Max Plus is the only potential universal option. The folded dimensions of the Magic V5 (156.8 x 74.3 x 8.8 mm) fall within the acceptable limits of the housing (180 x 82.5 x 11.2 mm). However, no specific adapter is validated by Divevolk for this model, and Divevolk states that you must contact their support to verify compatibility. The central hinge alters the internal load distribution, and this configuration has never been tested in real-world conditions by the manufacturer. In summary: if you already own a Magic V5 and want to use it for surface snorkeling, the IP58/IP59 rating provides protection up to 1.5 meters without any housing. For actual diving, using a flexible case plus a universal housing remains an unverified risk. For proven options, see our guide to waterproof housings for smartphones.

There is no dedicated housing available for foldable phones. The hinge design is fundamentally incompatible with current custom housings. Rating: 1.5/5 because the dimensions allow a potential attempt with the Divevolk SeaTouch 4 Max Plus, but without official validation or guarantee.

To ensure your smartphone fits securely and compare interior volume, make sure to check if your model's dimensions fit in this housing.

The Housing

There isn't one specifically designed for it, that's the reality of the market as of July 2026. If you are looking for a smartphone with a mature housing ecosystem, consider flagship models with flat backs: the Honor Magic 5 Pro has more available options. See our complete review of the Honor Magic 5 Pro to compare.

If you already own a Magic V5, using it for surface snorkeling (0-1.5 meters) without a housing is covered by the IP58/IP59 rating. Do not dive deeper without having verified a compatible housing with the manufacturer.

The post-dive workflow (snorkeling only)For surface snorkeling use: 10-bit DNG files via the native Pro mode, with MotionCam Pro as an optional add-on. A USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 cable to your computer is sufficient for file transfer. Lightroom Mobile and Snapseed process DNG files correctly. There's nothing particularly noteworthy here compared to any other high-end Android device.

Current Prices (July 2026)

Used Option

The depreciation on the Magic V5 is rapid: a foldable device with a list price of €1,799 that drops to €1,499 new at Fnac in just a few months, and under €1,100 when refurbished. This represents a real opportunity if you're looking for the best foldable smartphone camera currently available. For underwater photography while snorkeling, buying used remains a viable option. However, even a used Magic V5 at €900 is still a risky investment without a validated housing.

Our Honest RecommendationFoldable smartphones and underwater photography still don't go well together in 2026. This isn't a problem specific to Honor: no foldable phone on the market has a custom-designed waterproof housing. The hinge is incompatible with the sealing mechanism needed for a reliable waterproof enclosure that can withstand depths beyond a few meters. If your primary use is underwater photography, choose a classic flagship model with a flat back and a well-documented ecosystem of available housings.

The Honor Magic V5 is a remarkable photographic smartphone. Its triple sensor, 10-bit DNG format, silicon-carbon battery that resists cold temperatures, and exceptional IP58/IP59 rating for a foldable phone make it a fascinating choice for a versatile photographer.

However, for underwater photography, the foldable form factor remains a structural limitation in 2026. The hinge prevents the creation of a custom-designed waterproof housing. Without a housing, underwater photography is out of reach. The Magic V5 can accompany a careful snorkeler (IP58/IP59 covers 1.5 meters), but it doesn't replace a classic slab model with a well-suited Divevolk or Seafrogs housing.

Score: 3.6/5. Excellent phone, but not a good choice for underwater photography.
