Underwater photo test of the Honor Robot Phone and its gimbal arm. Score: 3.1/5. ARRI colorimetry. Incompatible with all underwater housings.
No, and the locking mechanism is mechanical, not a commercial restriction. The main sensor is mounted on a motorized arm that extends outside the housing. A waterproof housing is, by definition, a sealed volume with a fixed optical port. The two are incompatible by design, regardless of the housing manufacturer.
3.1/5 according to the AquaExposure rating system. The score is boosted by exceptional stabilization and ARRI-certified colorimetry, but lowered by the lack of a waterproof housing, the unavailability of professional RAW applications, and its exclusive availability on the Chinese market.
The information available is contradictory, and we prefer to point this out rather than offer a definitive answer. The GSMArena specifications list IP68 and IP69 ratings, while an unofficial mirror site indicates IP54. A motorized mechanism that passes through the chassis raises a legitimate question about its water resistance. Pending confirmation from Honor, consider this information as unverified.
The Magic 8 range. Unlike the Robot Phone, this range has been supported by DiveVolk since February 2026. The Magic 8 is compatible with the SeaTouch 4 Max Plus and Platinum models, the Magic 8 Pro is compatible with the Platinum model, and the Magic 8 Lite is compatible with the entire SeaTouch range.
ARRI is a German manufacturer of cinema cameras. This partnership provides native Log-C3 encoding and LUT-based color grading directly on the device. In other words, the resulting file has a flat color profile that preserves dynamic range, which is exactly what you want to achieve for color correction in post-processing.
There are devices that we test to determine whether or not to buy them, and others that we test to understand their limitations. The Honor Robot Phone, launched in China on August 12, 2026, belongs to the latter category.
It is the first smartphone with its main sensor mounted on a motorized robotic arm, which extends from the back of the device like a miniature stabilized camera. Technically, it is remarkable. Honor announces over one hundred precision components, sixty manufacturing processes, and a hundred patents.
However, the answer to the question that concerns us here is simple. This phone will never go underwater. Not because no manufacturer has yet made the effort, but because what gives it its value is precisely what prevents it from doing so. It is this contradiction that is worth explaining.
| Overall Score: 3.1/5 | Criterion | Score | What it means |

| Optics and sensor | 3.6/5 | Unmatched mechanical stabilization and macro capability at 2.5 cm, the best B1 in the comparison. | |
| RAW and color | 3.3/5 | ARRI-certified colorimetry, but no third-party RAW applications are accessible. | |
| Storage | 3.8/5 | Minimum 512 GB, USB-C 3.2, no memory card slot. | |
| Thermal performance |
| 2.3/5 |
| Aluminum chassis and a contradictory water resistance rating according to sources. |
| Battery | 3.0/5 | 7060 mAh silicon-carbon battery, but no documented battery life. |
| Autofocus | 3.0/5 | Good subject tracking, penalized by the lack of manual focus applications. |
| Housing | 0/5 | Definite mechanical incompatibility. |
This device is suitable for: terrestrial videographers, vloggers, and creators who film in motion.
This device is not ideal for: absolutely any underwater use, with no exceptions or possible workarounds.
This is the core of the issue, and it deserves its own explanation because it applies beyond just this phone.
A diving housing works on a simple principle: a rigid, sealed volume, one or more fixed optical windows, and O-rings compressed by water pressure. The deeper you go, the more pressure compresses the O-rings, and the more watertight the entire assembly becomes. It's elegant, and that's why it's worked for seventy years. This principle assumes that what is enclosed remains still. The device remains immobile, the optics remain aligned behind the port, and the internal space is calculated to the millimeter.
The Robot Phone does exactly the opposite. Its main sensor extends on a four-degree-of-freedom titanium arm, which pivots, tilts, and rotates during shooting. To enclose it, you would either have to lock it in its folded state, which would mean paying 9999 yuan to disable the only feature that justifies the price, or design a housing with sufficient free volume and a hemispherical window that accepts all angles of the arm.
This second option is not absurd in theory. It is simply irrelevant to the market: a housing of this type would cost more than the device itself, for a phone sold in only one country.
Let's add a factual detail: when folded, the device measures 151.4 x 72.9 x 9.6 mm. The universal Kraken KRH08 V2 housing accepts up to 8.8 mm of thickness. Even with the arm retracted, it doesn't fit.
If you are interested in housings beyond this particular case, our guide to waterproof housings details the criteria that really matter when choosing one.
To ensure your smartphone fits securely and compare interior volume, make sure to check if your model's dimensions fit in this housing.
The paradox of this device is that it achieves the best B1 score of all the phones we have reviewed this month. The main 200-megapixel sensor, with a 1/1.28-inch size, has an aperture of f/1.6 and is mounted on a three-axis mechanical stabilization system. No optical or electronic system integrated into a fixed housing can compete with a true gimbal. When diving, where even the slightest breath movement shifts the frame, and fin kicks introduce constant oscillation, this would have been transformative.
The 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens covers 122 degrees and offers macro capabilities at a distance of 2.5 centimeters. This is the closest focusing distance of all the devices in this comparison, far exceeding the 30 centimeters of the Redmi telephoto lens. To understand what this truly enables, see our article on macro photography with smartphones using close-up lenses.
The periscope telephoto lens also features a 200-megapixel sensor with a 1/1.4-inch size, and a 2.7x optical zoom.
[!NOTE] For more details Main sensor: 200 MP, 1/1.28 inch, f/1.6, 23mm equivalent, four-axis mechanical gimbal, 2.6g titanium motor, 6mm thick. Periscope telephoto lens: 200 MP, 1/1.4 inch, f/2.6, 2.7x optical zoom. Ultra-wide-angle lens: 50 MP, 122 degrees, macro at 2.5 cm. Image processing chip: Honor H1, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Video: 4K up to 120 frames per second. B1 score of 3.6, with a 5 out of 5 rating for stabilization and macro distance. The native ISO, solar flare, burst mode, and latency criteria are not documented and receive a neutral rating of 3.## RAW Format: Cinematic Colorimetry, Without the Tools to Utilize It
The partnership with ARRI is genuine and serious. ARRI manufactures cameras used in a significant portion of Western filmmaking, and the Robot Phone is the first device resulting from this collaboration.
Specifically, this provides native Log-C3 encoding and LUT-based color grading directly on the device. A Log curve preserves dynamic range instead of compressing it, which is exactly what is needed when trying to recover colors lost at depths of fifteen meters.
However, there is a significant obstacle, and it is fundamental. The device is exclusively sold in China, running MagicOS 10 without Google services. MotionCam Pro is available through the Play Store. Blackmagic Camera for Android is also available, but its official support is limited to Samsung and Google Pixel devices.
In other words, the best colorimetry in this comparison comes without any of the tools that would allow a diver to take advantage of it. Our scoring system automatically applies a penalty here, and it is well-deserved.
[!NOTE] For More Information Colorimetry rated 5 out of 5 thanks to the ARRI partnership, certified with documented Log-C3. Third-party professional applications are rated 0 out of 5 due to the lack of Google services. RAW bit depth and Kelvin white balance are not documented and are rated 3. B2 Score: 3.3. The application penalty alone costs nearly a point on the most heavily weighted section of the scoring system.## Water Resistance: A Contradiction We Won't Resolve
A point of honesty is necessary.
The GSMArena technical specifications for the Honor Robot Phone indicate an IP68 and IP69 certification. An unofficial Indian mirror site states IP54. These two values are very different- one describes a device that is dustproof and resistant to high-pressure jets, while the other is simply protected against splashes.
We were unable to find an official Honor datasheet confirming either value. And for a device with a motorized mechanism that traverses the chassis, the question deserves more than a guess.
Therefore, we note this information as unverified. This doesn't change the conclusion, since no IP rating ever allows for diving, but a reader who would purchase this device for terrestrial use in a humid environment should know that the information is circulating in two versions.
If you are interested in the brand and diving is your goal, the answer exists and it is simple.
Since February 2026, DiveVolk has published a comprehensive compatibility guide for the Honor Magic 8 series. The standard Magic 8 works with the SeaTouch 4 Max Plus and the Platinum. The Magic 8 Pro is reserved for the Platinum, due to its optical block. The Magic 8 Lite accepts the entire range, including the older generation SeaTouch 4 Max.This is one of the most comprehensive Android phone cases in the DiveVolk ecosystem. We have detailed the differences between the models in our comparison SeaTouch 4 Max or Platinum.
Available cases. None, and none are planned. This is not a matter of timing.
Availability. China only. Honor has not announced any plans for a global release. The reason given during press previews is the repair network- a motorized mechanism requires after-sales service capable of maintaining it, which currently only exists in mainland China.
Prices. 9999 yuan for the 12 GB and 512 GB version, 12999 yuan for the 16 GB and 1 TB version, which is approximately 1200 and 1550 euros at the exchange rate observed at the end of August 2026. This should be checked at the time of purchase, as exchange rates fluctuate.
Used market. Not applicable, and not of interest for underwater use.
I really like what this device represents. It shows that a manufacturer can still take a real industrial risk instead of simply adding a megapixel to an existing product line, and mechanical stabilization in a phone is an idea that will eventually matter.
However, I will not recommend it to a diver, and I will not pretend that a case will ever be available. This phone is an excellent tool for terrestrial videographers that will stay dry, and that's perfectly fine.If you're considering using a Honor phone for diving, the Magic 8 is a good option. However, the best underwater stabilization comes from proper weighting, buoyancy control, and body positioning, and that doesn't cost anything other than training time.
Can the Honor Robot Phone be used for diving? No. The main sensor is mounted on a motorized arm that extends outside the chassis, which is inherently incompatible with a sealed volume with a fixed optical port.
What is the Honor Robot Phone's score for underwater photography? 3.1/5. Its strengths are the ARRI stabilization and colorimetry. Its weaknesses are the lack of a waterproof housing and the unavailability of professional RAW applications.
Is the Honor Robot Phone waterproof? Sources contradict each other, stating either IP68 or IP69, while others claim IP54. We consider this information unverified due to the lack of an official Honor specification sheet.
Which Honor phone should I choose for underwater photography? The Magic 8 series, covered by DiveVolk since February 2026 on the SeaTouch 4 Max Plus and Platinum models.
What is the purpose of the ARRI colorimetry on this phone? It provides native Log-C3 encoding and LUT calibration on the device, resulting in a flat curve that preserves dynamic range for post-processing.
---The stability of an underwater image primarily comes from the diver's body position, far more than from the camera's electronics. This is one of the first things we work on in the AquaExposure training.
