Honor Robot Phone Underwater: Why This Phone Won't Go Diving

There are devices that we test to determine whether or not to buy them, and others that we test to understand their limitations. The Honor Robot Phone, launched in China on August 12, 2026, belongs to the latter category.

It is the first smartphone with its main sensor mounted on a motorized robotic arm, which extends from the back of the device like a miniature stabilized camera. Technically, it is remarkable. Honor announces over one hundred precision components, sixty manufacturing processes, and a hundred patents.

However, the answer to the question that concerns us here is simple. This phone will never go underwater. Not because no manufacturer has yet made the effort, but because what gives it its value is precisely what prevents it from doing so. It is this contradiction that is worth explaining.

Why a gimbal arm prevents the use of a housing

This is the core of the issue, and it deserves its own explanation because it applies beyond just this phone.

A diving housing works on a simple principle: a rigid, sealed volume, one or more fixed optical windows, and O-rings compressed by water pressure. The deeper you go, the more pressure compresses the O-rings, and the more watertight the entire assembly becomes. It's elegant, and that's why it's worked for seventy years.This principle assumes that what is enclosed remains still. The device remains immobile, the optics remain aligned behind the port, and the internal space is calculated to the millimeter.

The Robot Phone does exactly the opposite. Its main sensor extends on a four-degree-of-freedom titanium arm, which pivots, tilts, and rotates during shooting. To enclose it, you would either have to lock it in its folded state, which would mean paying 9999 yuan to disable the only feature that justifies the price, or design a housing with sufficient free volume and a hemispherical window that accepts all angles of the arm.

This second option is not absurd in theory. It is simply irrelevant to the market: a housing of this type would cost more than the device itself, for a phone sold in only one country.

Let's add a factual detail: when folded, the device measures 151.4 x 72.9 x 9.6 mm. The universal Kraken KRH08 V2 housing accepts up to 8.8 mm of thickness. Even with the arm retracted, it doesn't fit.

The Optics: The Best Score in the Comparison, and It's Frustrating

The paradox of this device is that it achieves the best B1 score of all the phones we have reviewed this month.The main 200-megapixel sensor, with a 1/1.28-inch size, has an aperture of f/1.6 and is mounted on a three-axis mechanical stabilization system. No optical or electronic system integrated into a fixed housing can compete with a true gimbal. When diving, where even the slightest breath movement shifts the frame, and fin kicks introduce constant oscillation, this would have been transformative.

The 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens covers 122 degrees and offers macro capabilities at a distance of 2.5 centimeters. This is the closest focusing distance of all the devices in this comparison, far exceeding the 30 centimeters of the Redmi telephoto lens. The periscope telephoto lens also features a 200-megapixel sensor with a 1/1.4-inch size, and a 2.7x optical zoom.

The partnership with ARRI is genuine and serious. ARRI manufactures cameras used in a significant portion of Western filmmaking, and the Robot Phone is the first device resulting from this collaboration.

Specifically, this provides native Log-C3 encoding and LUT-based color grading directly on the device. A Log curve preserves dynamic range instead of compressing it, which is exactly what is needed when trying to recover colors lost at depths of fifteen meters.

However, there is a significant obstacle, and it is fundamental. The device is exclusively sold in China, running MagicOS 10 without Google services. MotionCam Pro is available through the Play Store. Blackmagic Camera for Android is also available, but its official support is limited to Samsung and Google Pixel devices.

In other words, the best colorimetry in this comparison comes without any of the tools that would allow a diver to take advantage of it. Our scoring system automatically applies a penalty here, and it is well-deserved.

A point of honesty is necessary.

The GSMArena technical specifications for the Honor Robot Phone indicate an IP68 and IP69 certification. An unofficial Indian mirror site states IP54. These two values are very different- one describes a device that is dustproof and resistant to high-pressure jets, while the other is simply protected against splashes.

We were unable to find an official Honor datasheet confirming either value. And for a device with a motorized mechanism that traverses the chassis, the question deserves more than a guess.

Therefore, we note this information as unverified. This doesn't change the conclusion, since no IP rating ever allows for diving, but a reader who would purchase this device for terrestrial use in a humid environment should know that the information is circulating in two versions.

The Alternative: The Magic 8 Range

If you are interested in the brand and diving is your goal, the answer exists and it is simple.

What you need to know before buying

Available cases. None, and none are planned. This is not a matter of timing.

Availability. China only. Honor has not announced any plans for a global release. The reason given during press previews is the repair network- a motorized mechanism requires after-sales service capable of maintaining it, which currently only exists in mainland China.

Prices. 9999 yuan for the 12 GB and 512 GB version, 12999 yuan for the 16 GB and 1 TB version, which is approximately 1200 and 1550 euros at the exchange rate observed at the end of August 2026. This should be checked at the time of purchase, as exchange rates fluctuate.

Used market. Not applicable, and not of interest for underwater use.

Our verdict

I really like what this device represents. It shows that a manufacturer can still take a real industrial risk instead of simply adding a megapixel to an existing product line, and mechanical stabilization in a phone is an idea that will eventually matter.

However, I will not recommend it to a diver, and I will not pretend that a case will ever be available. This phone is an excellent tool for terrestrial videographers that will stay dry, and that's perfectly fine.If you're considering using a Honor phone for diving, the Magic 8 is a good option. However, the best underwater stabilization comes from proper weighting, buoyancy control, and body positioning, and that doesn't cost anything other than training time.
