Mares Nemo Wide 2 Review: An Evolution with Continuity
Our complete review of the Mares Nemo Wide 2. The second generation of this popular dive computer features a redesigned display and an integrated timer.
What are the differences between the Nemo Wide 1 and the Nemo Wide 2?
The Nemo Wide 2 retains the same housing but incorporates a faster processor, improved readability- the lower line of the screen has been redesigned to display larger characters- and adds a stopwatch with split time functionality to its Bottom Timer mode.
Can I use the Nemo Wide 2 for consecutive dives using Nitrox?
Yes, it can manage up to 3 gas mixtures perfectly (air and nitrox from 21% to 99% oxygen) with the possibility of changing gases underwater to optimize your decompression stops.
Is the Nemo Wide 2 compatible with both Mac and PC computers?
Yes, using the optional USB Drak interface, you can download your dive data and update the device's internal software (firmware) on a PC (using Dive Organizer) or a Mac (using Divers Diary).
Can I replace the battery myself?
Absolutely. It is powered by a standard CR2450 battery housed in a separate waterproof compartment, making it easy and safe for the user to replace.
Scuba diving equipment often evolves in small increments, seeking a delicate balance between proven reliability and necessary technological advancements. Following the resounding success of the first Nemo Wide, Mares chose the path of evolution rather than revolution. The Nemo Wide 2 retains the massive rectangular housing and the four iconic buttons of its predecessor.
The improvements are hidden beneath the surface. It features a faster microprocessor, a redesigned screen for even greater clarity, and a timer function requested by technical divers. This review examines whether these adjustments are sufficient to keep this benchmark of readability competitive against newer models. Dedication, repetition, and self-improvement are at the heart of our practice, and our equipment must adhere to the same standards.

Detailed Analysis
Algorithm & decompression stopsTrue to its philosophy, Mares incorporates its RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model) algorithm, developed with Dr. Bruce Wienke. This predictive model manages the formation of micro-bubbles and suggests deep stops to smooth out the ascent profile. It's a reliable feature for minimizing post-dive fatigue, with several adjustable levels of conservatism. The ascent rate alarm, both visual and audible, adds an appreciable layer of safety. (Score O1: 3.8/5)
Air & Multi-Gas
The Nemo Wide 2 is a highly capable multi-gas computer. It handles air and Nitrox, allowing you to configure up to three different gas mixes with an oxygen percentage ranging up to 99%. It will predictively calculate the benefit of a gas switch during ascent. It's an excellent companion for technical diving progression, although it doesn't support Trimix, CCR, or air management. (Score O2: 2.3/5)
Display & ErgonomicsThis is the main improvement in this second version. Mares has maintained the 170-degree viewing angle but redesigned the matrix of the panoramic mineral LCD screen (2.5 inches). The lower information bar is now much clearer, and the characters have been enlarged. The philosophy behind the four buttons remains the same: one to go up, one to go down, one to confirm, and one to cancel. The readability is so straightforward that even with thick gloves, navigation remains very, very precise. (Score O3: 3.6/5)
Battery Life
There are no changes in this area, and that's a good thing. It uses a CR2450 battery that you can find everywhere in the world. The battery compartment is separated from the main electronics by a high-quality o-ring. This minimizes the risk of complete flooding if not assembled correctly. The charge indicator on the screen allows you to anticipate replacements. (Score O4: 3.8/5)
Connectivity & App
Although the processor has been improved to allow users to update the firmware, the Nemo Wide 2 still lacks Bluetooth connectivity. You will need to purchase the Mares Drak USB clip to communicate with your PC or Mac. The official software, Dive Organizer for PC and Divers Diary for Mac, does the job, but the lack of wireless connectivity is noticeable in this day and age. (Score O5: 2.6/5)
Compass & InstrumentsThere is still no electronic compass included. However, the Bottom Timer mode has been significantly improved. It now includes a stopwatch function with intermediate times and a resettable average depth display. These are highly valued features in technical diving. (Score O6: 2.8/5)
Durability & Depth Rating
With its angular design protected by an elastomer insert, it is perfectly resistant to the rough handling of boats. Its casing and flat mineral glass ensure use up to a depth of 150 meters. This is a tool designed to last and withstand the impacts inherent in our activity. (Score O7: 3.6/5)
Price & Customer Service
The Nemo Wide 2 offers very solid specifications for its estimated price of around 250 euros. Whether you find it new on clearance or on the used market, it is one of the most affordable multi-gas solutions guaranteeing such visual clarity. (Score O8: 3.9/5)
Who is this computer for?
This computer is designed for a very wide range of divers, from Open Water to Advanced divers performing deep Nitrox decompression dives. It is ideal for divers seeking the clearest possible display without opting for OLED technology, and who appreciate logical navigation and buttons that can be easily manipulated even with thick gloves. It is not ideal for those who prefer miniaturized watch-style devices or those who require direct wireless connectivity to their smartphone. If you are looking for a similar product but with Bluetooth, consider the Mares Quad, which adopts the same philosophy as the Nemo Wide but incorporates modern wireless technology.
Customer Service and Support
Mares' customer service receives mixed reviews. Some divers report quick turnaround times of eight days, while others mention delays or inflexibility regarding shipping costs. The retailer plays a significant role in this process. It is crucial to work with a trusted professional to ensure optimal support in case of any issues.
Power Supply
The user-replaceable CR2450 battery is a major advantage for long trips and cruises. You are not dependent on a specific charger or an available power outlet. Having a spare battery in your dry bag ensures that you will never miss a dive due to low battery power.
Links to other models from the same brandIf you appreciate the Mares ergonomics but are looking for different features, the range is extensive. For a more modern approach with Bluetooth connectivity, the Mares Quad is the spiritual successor to the Nemo Wide. If you prefer a watch format for everyday use, the Mares Sirius offers a compact and high-performance alternative.
