Mares Smart Air Review- The recreational dive computer with air management.

Choosing a dive computer often involves a delicate balance between readability underwater, everyday comfort, and the reliability of the displayed data.

We spend hours scrutinizing our screens in conditions of sometimes limited visibility, where every piece of information must be understood instantly.

Diving requires rigor, preparation, and mastery of your equipment.

Having a wristwatch-style computer is undeniably convenient when traveling, as you wear it from breakfast to the safety stop.

However, this device remains the critical tool that manages your safety, your saturation levels, and your ascent to the surface.

With the Mares Smart Air, the Italian manufacturer revisits the very popular design of the classic Mares Smart and adds wireless air management.

This model clearly targets recreational or regular divers looking for a simple interface with just two buttons.

It offers an approach so familiar that using it feels almost natural from the first dive.

This review aims to determine whether this model, based on an older proprietary RGBM algorithm, remains competitive compared to the current wave of Bühlmann computers.

We will analyze its technical capabilities, its algorithmic limitations, and its overall ergonomics.

Algorithm and Decompression Stops

Your saturation management relies on a proven and secure model that has accompanied divers for many years.

This model does not allow for the opening and fine adjustments found in computers with more recent designs. The Smart Air utilizes Mares-Wienke's proprietary RGBM algorithm, which is based on ten distinct tissue compartments.

This mathematical approach models gas absorption in your body with a focus on safety above all else.

The reduced gradient bubble model, or RGBM, takes into account the formation of silent micro-bubbles during ascents.

It penalizes inverted dive profiles, rapid ascents, and closely spaced consecutive dives to limit the risk of decompression accidents.

This penalty can result in potentially longer intermediate stops if you do not follow an ideal dive profile.

It offers a decompression dive planner that allows you to anticipate your intermediate stops before even entering the water.

This function is extremely useful for mentally preparing for your dive and verifying that your air supply will be sufficient.

Planning is the cornerstone of a successful dive, especially when you begin to approach the limits of non-decompression diving.

Unlike newer models such as the Sirius or Puck 4, it does not use the Bühlmann ZH-L16C model.

Therefore, it does not offer adjustable Gradient Factors that allow for surgically precise customization of conservatism.

This lack of advanced personalization makes it suitable for users who prefer to trust the device without delving into complex settings. It incorporates visual and audible ascent rate alarms, which are crucial for preventing decompression accidents.

These alerts are so clear that you won't be able to ignore them, even during an ascent in open water without a visual reference point.

Discipline, repetition, and mastery of buoyancy remain your best allies in avoiding triggering these alarms.

A dive computer is a decision-making aid, never an absolute guarantee against the unpredictable aspects of human physiology.

Optimal performance does not eliminate the need for appropriate training and strict adherence to procedures learned during your courses.

Air and Multi-Gas

This computer is perfectly calibrated to accompany you from your first air dives to more complex dives requiring a Nitrox decompression block.

The computer manages up to three gases simultaneously, offering significant flexibility for divers who are advancing their technical skills.

It accepts Nitrox mixtures ranging from 21% to 99% oxygen, covering all the needs of advanced recreational diving.

Using enriched air (Nitrox) can help reduce post-dive fatigue and increase your safety with regard to decompression sickness.

Gas changes underwater are natively supported by the interface, allowing you to switch to your Nitrox block with just a few button presses. This maneuver requires practice, concentration, and validation with your dive buddy before attempting it underwater.

An incorrect gas selection at depth can have dramatic consequences related to oxygen toxicity.

The Smart Air unit can connect via radio frequency to a maximum of three separate pressure transmitters.

These Mares transmitters feature a flashing light that indicates the remaining pressure using a simple color code.

Green, yellow, and red allow your dive buddies to visually assess your air supply without even looking at your screen.

This air integration greatly simplifies reading your air consumption and helps you optimize your breathing throughout your dives.

However, the air integration mentioned above always requires the presence of a mechanical pressure gauge as a backup on your regulator.

Loss of signal or battery failure in the transmitter are common occurrences that should never compromise your dive.

Trimix and modes for closed-circuit rebreathers are completely absent from this device.

This technical choice confirms its positioning as purely recreational equipment and excludes deep technical dives requiring helium to counteract nitrogen narcosis.

For recreational divers, this limitation is not a hindrance at all, as it simplifies the interface by removing unnecessary menus.

Screen and ErgonomicsThe standard liquid crystal display offers excellent contrast in sunlight while significantly conserving battery power.

The screen is a segmented display protected by tempered mineral glass, which effectively minimizes scratches from everyday wear and tear.

Surface readability is excellent, making it much easier to adjust settings on the boat deck in bright sunlight.

Navigation through the menus is accomplished using two side buttons that provide clear and reassuring tactile feedback, even when wearing neoprene gloves.

The watch's compact design, with a diameter of less than fifty millimeters, inevitably means smaller characters compared to a console computer.

This compactness requires good near vision, especially when ambient light decreases at depth or in waters with high particulate content.

The interface is so intuitive that navigation quickly becomes second nature after just a few introductory dives.

You must accept this trade-off between the reduced bulk on your wrist and the size of the information displayed on the main screen.

The data layout is designed to highlight current depth, dive time, and no-decompression time.

Secondary information requires pressing the buttons to appear, which prevents the display from becoming cluttered during the dive. The backlight is sufficient for night dives or wreck explorations, although it consumes additional power.

It activates easily with a simple long press, illuminating the screen with a pleasant bluish glow that is easy on the eyes in the dark.

Readability remains the number one criterion when choosing a dive computer, and this LCD model lives up to its promise with remarkable efficiency.

Battery Life

This is a major advantage of this type of liquid crystal display compared to modern color screens that require frequent recharges.

You won't have to worry about plugging it in every night like a modern smartwatch that drains its battery in just a few hours.

The Smart Air is powered by a CR2450 lithium battery that the user can replace themselves with minimal tools and care.

Mares claims an excellent lifespan, estimated between two hundred and three hundred dives over a period of three years.

This autonomy is very, very comfortable for professionals or travelers who string together multiple dives far from any power outlet.

User replacement is a major advantage that avoids costly and time-consuming trips to a service center in the middle of a diving season.

It is important to clean the compartment thoroughly and lightly lubricate the O-ring during replacement to ensure perfect water tightness.Improper handling during battery changes remains the primary cause of dive computer failures in wristwatch-style units.

Be aware that repeated use of the wireless air transmitter will significantly reduce battery life.

Radio frequency communication requires power, so you should monitor the battery indicator more closely if you are using this feature.

The transmitters themselves run on replaceable batteries, which necessitates careful management of your battery stock before a trip.

The freedom offered by this power system largely compensates for the need to carry a few spare batteries in your dive bag.

Connectivity and App

Transferring your dive log to your smartphone is not possible directly from the watch itself.

You need to purchase an additional accessory to bridge the connection between the dive computer and your mobile phone or tablet.

The internal memory stores up to ninety-five hours of dive profiles with a precise sampling rate of five seconds.

This generous memory allows you to go on extended trips without worrying about overwriting the data from your first few dives of the week.

To export this data to the MySSI app or update the firmware, you need to equip yourself with the optional Bluelink Pro interface. This reliance on an external module is a drawback in an era where native Bluetooth is becoming the standard in the market.

Analyzing your dive profiles on a large screen remains a fundamental step for understanding your air consumption and tissue saturation.

Observation, analysis, and correction of your dive profiles are key to consistent progress in scuba diving.

The application allows you to visualize your depth curves, temperature variations, and minute-by-minute air consumption.

This objective data is valuable for adjusting your weighting, improving your finning technique, and optimizing your breathing during future dives.

Regular firmware updates ensure that your computer benefits from the latest corrections and improvements developed by the manufacturer.

It is always recommended to check for available updates before embarking on a long dive trip abroad.

Compass and Instruments

This model focuses on essential calculations of time and saturation, leaving aside advanced electronic navigation features.

There is no integrated electronic compass in this compact housing, which means you will need to wear a separate magnetic compass on your other wrist.

For many divers, an analog compass remains more readable and responsive than a finicky digital compass.Learning to navigate using a traditional compass is a fundamental skill that should never be completely delegated to electronics.

On the other hand, the Smart Air offers a full watch mode with a dual time zone, which is very practical for international travelers.

It includes a depth gauge mode that features a resettable average depth and a precise timer for decompression stops.

This mode is particularly useful for technical divers who use the device as a redundant backup instrument during demanding dives.

It also offers a specific freediving mode that will delight enthusiasts of underwater hiking and spearfishing.

This Freediving mode clearly displays instantaneous depth, dive time, and surface recovery time.

The versatility of these instruments partially compensates for the lack of a compass, offering tools suitable for various aquatic activities.

A single instrument on your wrist allows you to switch from scuba diving to freediving without having to change equipment between sessions.

Robustness and Depth Rating

The compact design hides a very robust construction, capable of withstanding environments well beyond the reach of recreational divers.

The casing is certified for a maximum display depth of one hundred fifty meters, which provides a significant safety margin. The mineral glass enhances its durability against common hazards to equipment, such as sand, salt, and impacts on the boat deck.

This robustness is so reassuring that you almost forget about the presence of the computer on your wrist when handling heavy tanks.

The quality of assembly reflects the Italian brand's expertise in designing durable and reliable instruments for professionals.

It will withstand the rigors of repeated travel, extreme temperature variations, and daily dives in saltwater without any issues.

The buttons are designed to easily expel salt crystals and sand that could interfere with their operation.

A thorough rinsing with fresh water after each day of diving remains essential to preserve the flexibility of the seals and mechanisms.

The longevity of your equipment depends as much on its manufacturing quality as on the care you give it over the years.

Regular maintenance and storage away from direct sunlight will significantly extend the lifespan of your instrument.

Price and Customer Service

The addition of air pressure management makes this model a very interesting investment for those who want to ensure accurate pressure readings.

It allows access to this technology without breaking the bank, offering a particularly competitive quality-to-price ratio on the market.Mares' after-sales service provides peace of mind in Europe, although customer experiences can vary depending on the region.

Opinions regarding technical support are divided within the diving community and among professional instructors.

Some warranty repairs are completed in as little as eight days, demonstrating the remarkable efficiency of the European repair center.

Other users report occasional delays or a certain inflexibility concerning shipping costs for returns.

The local dealer acts as an important intermediary between the manufacturer and the diver, and their involvement will determine how smoothly your issues are resolved.

It is crucial to choose a trusted partner store that will advocate for you in case of unexplained equipment failure.

Your relationship with your dive shop is often more important than the brand's overall policy.

Good communication with your dealer can often lead to solutions such as loaner equipment while your computer is being repaired.

This computer is primarily intended for recreational divers or travelers who want a watch-style instrument for everyday use.

It is ideal from the first level of certification and will perfectly support your progress, even up to dives requiring decompression with enriched air mixtures. The visual convenience of wireless air integration is a major advantage for those who like to centralize information on a single screen.

It will suit divers who appreciate the simplicity of a closed algorithm and do not feel the need to manipulate gradient factors.

Conversely, this computer is not ideal for the technical diver planning deep dives using Trimix.

It will also frustrate divers who absolutely want to control their decompression via an open and customizable Bühlmann algorithm.

If you are looking for a high-definition color screen or native Bluetooth connectivity without accessories, you should consider other models in the range.

The choice of a dive computer should always reflect your actual diving practices and not a fantasized projection of dives that you may never actually do.

The technical support for a dive computer is a fundamental criterion that determines the longevity of your equipment investment.

At Mares, after-sales service receives polarized opinions within the community of professionals and informed enthusiasts.

Some divers report warranty repairs completed in eight days, which indicates well-organized logistics.

Others report delays in processing claims or administrative rigidity regarding coverage of shipping costs.Within this distribution network, the retailer acts as a crucial intermediary between the end-user and the brand's headquarters.

The quality of your experience in case of a malfunction will largely depend on the commercial importance and involvement of your dive shop.

It is advisable to prioritize purchasing from a reputable physical store rather than solely seeking the lowest price online.

A good retailer will be able to lend you a loan unit while yours is being repaired by the manufacturer.

This continuity of service is invaluable when you have planned a long-awaited diving trip and a malfunction occurs just before departure.

Power management is a key strength of this model, which uses a standard CR2450 lithium battery that is readily available for purchase.

The fact that the user can replace this battery themselves is a significant advantage when traveling to remote areas.

You are not dependent on a specific charging cable or a temperamental power outlet on a cruise ship far from shore.

The advertised battery life of two hundred to three hundred dives provides remarkable peace of mind for intensive teaching seasons or exploration trips.

It's important to remember that using radio frequency pressure transmitters puts more strain on the main computer's battery. These Mares transmitters have a flashing light that allows your dive buddies to visually assess your air supply underwater.

This integration simplifies reading your air consumption, but it never replaces the redundancy of a traditional mechanical pressure gauge mounted on the first stage.

Loss of signal or battery failure in the transmitter are incidents that should never compromise your safety underwater.

Having an analog backup pressure gauge is a golden rule that every responsible diver should follow without hesitation.
