Mares Quad 2 Review- The Large Screen Dive Computer and Trimix Functionality.
Discover our comprehensive review of the Mares Quad 2. Features a large segmented display, Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm, 5 gas Trimix capability, and native Bluetooth. The AquaExposure verdict.
What is the difference between the standard Mares Quad and the Quad 2?
The Quad 2 retains the same large screen format but features a completely redesigned internal engine. It transitions from the RGBM algorithm to the Bühlmann ZH-L16C and now includes native Bluetooth connectivity. Furthermore, it can manage up to 5 gases, including Trimix.
Does the Mares Quad 2 manage the pressure of the tank (integrated air system)?
No, this specific version of the Quad 2 does not have a receiver for wireless probes. The air pressure is read using a traditional mechanical pressure gauge.
Is the Mares Quad 2 dive computer compatible with trimix?
Yes, it allows you to manage up to 5 gas mixtures. It supports Nitrox with oxygen levels up to 99%, as well as both normoxic and hypoxic trimix.
It's a common sight on dive boats to see a diver struggling to navigate the cramped menus of their dive computer during a safety stop, all while wearing thick gloves. A dive computer is more than just a timer- it's the vital interface that ensures your decompression safety at every moment. With the Mares Quad 2, the Italian manufacturer has decided to modernize its most popular large-screen model from the past decade. The goal? To maintain the massive readability of the original rectangular display, while replacing its old engine with a customizable Bühlmann algorithm that handles Trimix, and finally adding native Bluetooth connectivity. This review assesses whether this hardware overhaul justifies choosing it over more expensive color displays in favor of a classic, high-contrast interface.

## Detailed Analysis
Algorithm and Decompression Stops (O1)
The Quad 2 abandons the previous "black box" algorithm of the RGBM model to offer you complete control over your decompression calculations, a major evolution for this product line. The device features the renowned Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with Gradient Factors that are fully adjustable by the user. The dive planner manages the Time To Surface (TTS) to ensure safe approach to decompression stops. The computer triggers visual and audible alarms in case of anomalies or excessively rapid ascents.
Air and Multi-Gas (O2)
It is now capable of tracking divers through advanced technical open-circuit training, making cylinder changes extremely smooth. It manages up to 5 distinct gas mixes, including Nitrox (21% to 99% O2) and Trimix (hypoxic and normoxic). However, it does not have any native modes for rebreathers (CCR) and does not support wireless air integration.
Display and Ergonomics (O3)
The key advantage of this unit remains its XXL format, which never strains the eyes underwater, even in conditions of very low visibility. The monochrome display uses a segmented "Chip-On-Glass" technology offering very large characters. Operation is easy thanks to four large buttons located at the corners of the housing, perfectly suited for use with dry gloves.
Battery Life (O4)The "old-fashioned" LCD screen consumes very little power, eliminating the need to find a USB port on a boat between dives. The dive computer uses a CR2450 lithium battery that the user can replace themselves. The advertised battery life is 100 hours of dive time, which equates to an entire diving season or approximately one hundred deployments.
Connectivity and App (O5)
Forget about USB adapters sold separately- this dive computer finally meets modern comfort standards. The Bluetooth module is integrated from the factory, allowing direct synchronization of your dive log with the Mares app on your smartphone. The internal memory stores 100 hours of dive profiles with precise sampling every 5 seconds.
Compass and Instruments (O6)
Digital navigation is not included- the budget was allocated to mathematical processing power. The dive computer does not have a compass. However, it includes a standard depth timer function with resettable average depth display and a stopwatch.
Durability and Depth Rating (O7)
This massive rectangular housing is designed to withstand years of rough handling on Zodiac boats and boat decks. It is certified for a maximum display depth of 150 meters (492 feet), and automatically compensates for atmospheric pressure (altitude) every 20 seconds.
Price and Customer Service (O8)Offered at around €300 upon its release, providing a 5-gas Trimix management system coupled with Bluetooth on a large screen is a significant strategic move. Mares' logistics network ensures easy access to spare parts. Regarding Mares' after-sales service, opinions are divided. Some users report returns being processed in as little as 8 days, while others mention delays or inflexibility regarding shipping costs. Your experience will largely depend on the quality and responsiveness of your local dealer, who acts as a crucial intermediary between you and the after-sales department.
Who is this computer for?
This computer is designed for recreational divers or open-circuit technical divers who prioritize maximum readability at an affordable price, with a completely transparent algorithm. Its internal mechanics are actually built to support divers through advanced technical training (Trimix and multi-cylinder configurations), despite its simple appearance. It's not ideal for those seeking a state-of-the-art color screen or who absolutely want to display their tank pressure on their wrist. Users of rebreathers (CCR) should also consider dedicated product lines.
After-Sales Service and SupportMares' after-sales service receives mixed feedback. Some customers report quick replacements, sometimes in less than eight days, while others experience delays or inflexibility regarding shipping costs. The quality of the experience will largely depend on your local dealer, who plays a crucial role in handling requests. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose a responsive and dedicated dealer for any questions related to the support or warranty of your Mares Quad 2.
Power Supply
The Mares Quad 2 computer uses a replaceable CR2450 lithium battery. This feature is a significant advantage, especially for liveaboard trips where access to an electrical outlet to recharge a battery may be uncertain. The advertised battery life of 100 hours of dive time allows you to plan a full diving season without worry. However, it's wise to have some spare batteries on hand, especially before a long trip, to avoid any unexpected interruptions to your dives.
If the Mares Quad 2 has appealed to you with its simplicity and technical capabilities, you might be interested in other models from the Mares brand.
