What is the difference between the Mares Quad and the Quad Air?
The standard Mares Quad does not have a receiver for wireless air integration. It displays the same decompression information on a large screen, but it doesn't show your tank pressure.
Is the Mares Quad easy to read underwater?
Absolutely. Its 2.25-inch LCD screen with very large characters is specifically designed to provide maximum readability, especially for divers who need reading glasses or when diving in murky water.
Can I replace the battery in a Mares Quad regulator myself?
Yes, it uses a CR2450 button battery that you can easily replace yourself using a simple coin.
Does the Mares Quad regulator handle Nitrox?
Yes, it allows you to configure up to 3 different gas mixtures (air and nitrox from 21% to 99%), which is ideal for your accelerated decompression dives.
The transmission of information underwater follows strict rules that are often disrupted by fatigue or stress during dives.
We have all experienced those dive ends where the light suddenly diminishes and condensation subtly appears on the mask's glass.
In these critical moments that require complete concentration, the reading of decompression parameters must be free from any visual ambiguity.
A calculation instrument is only truly valuable if its interface allows for immediate, instinctive reading without any effort in interpretation.
It is precisely this philosophy of absolute clarity that guided the Italian manufacturer in the meticulous design of the Mares Quad.
This device fully embraces its utilitarian function by categorically rejecting the aesthetic compromises of a typical wristwatch.
It features a large rectangular display that prioritizes character size above all other considerations of design or compactness.
The goal is not to stand out at social gatherings, but rather to provide vital data with surgical readability at forty meters deep.
This review relies on a rigorous technical analysis of its algorithmic capabilities and a thorough study of its physical ergonomics.Let's examine together whether this classic, powered by the RGBM model, still holds relevance for today's recreational diver.
Technology is evolving rapidly, but the fundamental needs of a human being underwater remain consistently linked to safety and simplicity.

Detailed Analysis
Algorithm and Decompression Stops
Decompression management is the core of any dive computer that claims to ensure your safety underwater. The Mares Quad relies on the proprietary RGBM Mares-Wienke mathematical model, which simulates saturation in ten distinct tissues.
This is a very conservative approach that has proven its effectiveness over thousands of dives worldwide for many years.
The algorithm takes into account circulating micro-bubbles and adapts its calculations based on your actual dive profile.
The display of mandatory decompression stops and the total ascent time benefits from exceptional clarity, which immediately reassures the user.
The device triggers visual and audible alarms that are particularly noticeable in case of a decompression stop violation or excessive ascent rate.
These alerts are designed to cut through ambient noise from bubbles and attract your attention even when your mind is wandering on the reef.
However, it's important to remember that this system remains completely closed and does not allow for free adjustment of the Gradient Factors.
This limitation distances this model from recent Bühlmann standards, which offer a much more refined customization of the safety curve.
The technical diver who wants to plan their desaturation with surgical precision will quickly feel constrained by this calculation engine.
However, for the vast majority of recreational dives, this algorithmic rigidity guarantees an additional margin of safety that is highly appreciated. It prevents less experienced divers from getting lost in complex settings that could compromise their physical safety if an error occurs.
Air and Multi-Gas
A diver's progression is almost always accompanied by a gradual diversification of the breathing gas mixtures used during explorations.
This device faithfully accompanies you, from your first introductory dive to extended decompression stops using pure Nitrox.
It manages up to three gases simultaneously with oxygen fractions that can be adjusted from 21% to 99%, depending on the specific needs of your dive plan.
This capability allows for a rapid decompression block and seamless switching between gases underwater.
The interface guides the user during gas changes with a reassuring logic that significantly reduces the risk of error under stress.
Switching from a bottom gas to a stage gas is accomplished with just a few button presses, with clear visual confirmation on the main screen.
However, Trimix and modes dedicated to closed-circuit rebreathers are completely absent from the menus of this model.
This is a deliberate choice that specifically targets the recreational diving market and light technical diving.
The lack of wireless air integration in this standard version also means you will need to continue using a traditional mechanical pressure gauge. This is a proven configuration that favors hardware redundancy while keeping the purchase price within an extremely reasonable range.
Reading the pressure on an analog dial remains a good habit, maintaining the physical connection between the diver and their air supply.
Screen and Ergonomics
It is in this specific area that the Mares Quad completely outperforms much of the current competition.
The segmented LCD screen measures 2.25 inches diagonally and offers a monumental display surface that immediately catches the eye.
The main numbers are over one centimeter high to ensure perfect readability in all conditions and from all angles.
The contrast of this monochrome panel is remarkable, even in bright sunlight on the boat deck or in waters with suspended particles.
Traditional LCD technology demonstrates its absolute superiority in terms of pure readability compared to reflections.
Navigation through the various menus relies on four large buttons strategically placed at the corners of the rectangular housing.
This layout offers such direct ergonomics that even with very thick waterproof gloves, errors during operation are completely eliminated.
The spacing between the buttons prevents accidentally pressing two controls simultaneously when operating blindly. The user interface is straightforward, carefully avoiding complex sub-menus that often confuse novice divers during setup.
Each vital piece of information has a dedicated location on the screen that never changes during the dive.
This visual consistency allows the brain to quickly process the data at a glance without having to search for relevant information.
The cognitive load is significantly reduced, freeing up attention for observing marine life or managing buoyancy.
Battery Life
Power management often dictates peace of mind during extended trips away from shore and charging facilities.
This model completely eliminates the anxiety associated with low battery warnings that frequently plague owners of color-screen dive computers on cruise ships.
It is powered by a standard CR2450 lithium button cell battery that the user can replace themselves without needing to consult a certified technician.
The operation requires only a simple coin to unscrew the rear cover and takes less than two minutes to complete on a clean surface.
Its battery life exceeds well over one hundred dives before showing any signs of weakness or displaying a low-battery warning.
This energy efficiency is due to the absence of a power-hungry color screen and perfectly optimized internal electronics for this type of display. This is a major logistical advantage for instructors who work multiple seasons and don't want to worry about the daily charging of their equipment.
The ability to carry a few spare batteries in a waterproof bag provides virtually unlimited battery life during expeditions to remote locations.
The system alerts the user well in advance of complete power failure, leaving ample time to replace the batteries between dives.
Connectivity and App
Transferring data to a digital dive log has become an expected feature for divers who enjoy analyzing their profiles.
The Mares Quad shows its age by lacking a native Bluetooth module directly integrated into the circuit board of the housing.
To export your dive profiles to the Mares app or to update the firmware, an additional step is inevitably required.
You will need to purchase either the Dive Link 2 USB adapter or the Bluelink Pro interface, which are sold separately by the manufacturer.
This hardware limitation adds a hidden cost to the initial budget and requires an extra step upon returning from the dive.
Once the physical or optical connection is established, data transfer remains reliable and allows you to retrieve all recorded parameters. The application allows you to view the depth profile, temperatures encountered, and any alarms that were triggered during the dive.
This approach, reminiscent of older technologies, contrasts sharply with the seamless wireless synchronization offered by more recent competing models.
It requires the diver to carry an additional specific cable in their luggage, which goes against the current trend towards miniaturization.
Compass and Instruments
Underwater navigation requires specialized tools that some manufacturers integrate directly into the circuits of their high-end computers.
The Mares Quad deliberately focuses exclusively on decompression calculations and precise measurement of dive time.
It does not include a digital compass and will require you to use a traditional magnetic compass mounted on your opposite wrist or on a separate panel.
This technical choice helps maintain an aggressive selling price while avoiding the frequent calibration issues that can occur with electronic compasses.
However, it features a precise timer and a depth gauge mode that is particularly effective for specific dive profiles.
This Bottom Timer mode displays the resettable average depth during the dive with a simple press of one of the main buttons. This feature is highly valued by technical divers who calculate their decompression using dive tables or the ratio method.
The absence of an electronic compass significantly simplifies the menus and contributes to the overall ease of use of the device.
The readability of depth and time data is enhanced because the screen is not cluttered with a virtual compass rose.
Durability and Depth Rating
Diving equipment experiences mechanical and thermal stresses that few consumer-grade electronic devices can withstand over the long term.
The Mares Quad's robust housing made of hardened plastic is designed to absorb repeated impacts during launches from moving boats.
Its rectangular construction effectively protects the internal components from accidental crushing at the bottom of a poorly handled carrying bag.
The entire structure is certified by the manufacturer for a maximum operating depth of 150 meters without risk of deformation.
This structural safety margin ensures perfect sealing even during rapid descents that put significant stress on the O-rings.
The protective mineral glass offers good resistance to minor scratches from everyday use and friction against rocks or wrecks.
It is an instrument that immediately inspires confidence due to its weight and the perceived quality of its external assemblies. The oversized buttons are mounted on sturdy shafts that show no signs of weakness, even after hundreds of uses.
The original elastomer strap is long enough to fit over the thickest drysuits available on the market.
Price and Customer Service
The price positioning of this computer makes it undeniably one of the most practical choices in today's recreational diving market.
It offers exceptional readability for a very controlled basic budget, which naturally appeals to many beginner divers.
However, the after-sales service provided by the Italian brand elicits polarized opinions within the community of regular users.
Some users report warranty exchanges completed in just eight days, with exemplary professionalism from the manufacturer.
Others report incomprehensible administrative delays or a certain rigidity regarding coverage of shipping costs for returning equipment.
In this specific context, the local retailer acts as a crucial intermediary between the diver and the administrative processes of the brand's headquarters.
Therefore, it is essential to purchase this equipment from a reputable physical store or online retailer known for its genuine commitment to supporting its customers.
A good professional will be able to defend your case and obtain a quick replacement in the event of premature electronic failure.## Who is this computer for?
The Mares Quad is primarily aimed at recreational divers who are looking for a large display without having to break the bank to get it.
It excels from the initial certification level all the way up to advanced Nitrox courses, thanks to its smooth management of three separate decompression gases.
It's the perfect tool for people with presbyopia or those who regularly dive in dark waters with heavy sediment loads.
Work, repetition, and pushing your limits require reliable instruments that don't add unnecessary mental burden during dives.
This computer perfectly meets this requirement by providing essential data with a clarity that is almost audacious.
However, this computer is not ideal for technical divers who are using Trimix blends or rebreathers.
It will also disappoint those who prefer the discreet format of a dive watch for everyday wear in the office or during land-based activities.
Its size makes it suitable exclusively for underwater use, where its generous dimensions become a major advantage.
Service and Support
The longevity of a piece of equipment depends largely on the quality of technical support offered by the manufacturer throughout the product's lifespan. The Mares network relies on a very dense global distribution system, which greatly facilitates initial support in case of proven malfunctions.
However, feedback regarding after-sales service remains highly varied depending on the geographic regions and the contacts involved.
In some cases, issues are handled with remarkable efficiency, resulting in a quick replacement of defective equipment without any discussion.
Other cases highlight extended processing times or difficulties communicating with authorized repair centers.
The role of the retailer becomes crucial here to facilitate communication and vigorously defend the customer's interests against the manufacturer.
A specialized store can exert pressure on the national distributor to expedite a legitimate warranty process that gets bogged down in administrative procedures.
It is strongly recommended to carefully keep your proof of purchase and to use official channels for any technical assistance requests.
Power Supply
The power source of a dive computer directly affects its usability during long trips or isolated expeditions.
Choosing a battery that can be replaced by the user offers immense flexibility compared to sealed, rechargeable batteries. You don't need to frantically search for an available power outlet in the cramped cabin of a crowded cruise ship.
Simply slip a spare CR2450 battery into your toolkit before you leave to ensure dozens of dives with complete peace of mind.
The waterproof compartment opens easily with a coin, and the O-ring can be replaced without major difficulty.
This simple mechanical design avoids planned obsolescence due to the inevitable degradation of internal lithium-ion batteries over time.
It's a guarantee of longevity for an instrument that can accompany you for an entire decade with minimal maintenance.
Replacing the seal annually when changing the battery is the only technical requirement to ensure the system's long-term reliability.
The Italian manufacturer's range offers interesting alternatives if your needs evolve as you progress technically underwater. If you want to keep this large screen format while benefiting from wireless air management, the Mares Quad Air is a logical evolution of your equipment.
For divers who want to fine-tune their Gradient Factors with an open Bühlmann algorithm, the Mares Quad Ci series offers this highly sought-after algorithmic flexibility.
Finally, those who prefer a watch format for everyday use outside of the water can consider the Mares Sirius, which condenses these technologies into a much more compact housing.
Each model meets specific requirements that warrant careful analysis before you make your final choice.
