Detailed Analysis
Algorithm & Decompression Stops (5.0/5)
The Ocean represents a significant turning point for Suunto. The historical RGBM algorithm, which has long been the brand's signature, is replaced here by the highly respected Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm, enhanced with Gradient Factors. This evolution gives the diver complete control over their ascent profile, with precise adjustment of the GF Low (from 10 to 100) and GF High (from 50 to 100). The display of decompression stops is exceptionally clear, with a TTS (Time To Surface) indicator and a graphical representation in an arc that clearly visualizes the decompression zones. This is a pedagogical and safe approach, allowing the diver to understand, visualize, and adjust their decompression with increased precision. The ability to personalize these parameters is a major advantage for divers who want a decompression management system tailored to their physiology and the type of dive being undertaken.
Air & Multi-Gas (2.3/5)This computer is designed to meet the needs of most recreational divers with light technical requirements, offering management of five switchable decompression gases. It supports Air and Nitrox, with oxygen percentages ranging from 21% to 100%. It's important to note the deliberate omission of Trimix and rebreather mode. While this limitation may mechanically lower its overall score in our rating system for highly technical divers, it shouldn't overshadow the fact that the Ocean remains a powerful decompression computer for diving with enriched air mixtures. For advanced recreational divers or experienced Nitrox divers, this capability is more than sufficient and offers appreciable flexibility for longer or deeper dives within the limits of Nitrox.
Screen & Ergonomics (4.6/5)The high-definition AMOLED screen, with its 466x466 pixels on a 1.43-inch display, redefines readability underwater. The contrast is striking, the colors are vibrant, and the information is presented with clarity that greatly facilitates reading, even in low light or reduced visibility conditions. Suunto has intelligently integrated a system of lockable physical buttons. This feature allows you to freeze the underwater interface, preventing accidental contact with your wetsuit or equipment from altering a crucial setting. Navigation remains smooth and intuitive thanks to the three push buttons, even when wearing thick gloves – a detail that makes all the difference while diving. The balance between touch controls and physical buttons is perfectly mastered here, offering the best of both worlds.
Battery Life (4.6/5)Battery life is undoubtedly one of the standout features of this model. The Suunto Ocean offers 40 to 60 hours of dive tracking in continuous use, a remarkable performance for a screen of this quality- although it depends on the use of the sensor. In standard watch mode, it can last up to 26 days, which is simply exceptional. The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, charged via a magnetic cable, eliminates the hassle and expense of changing batteries, and most importantly, ensures your long diving weekends or remote cruises are worry-free. This peace of mind, knowing that your dive computer won't fail you in the middle of a series of dives, is a significant advantage for any diver concerned with their logistics.
Connectivity & App (4.5/5)The strength of Suunto's outdoor ecosystem directly benefits the diver. The Bluetooth synchronization to the Suunto app is fast and efficient, allowing you to create an impressive dive logbook. This includes a 3D modeling of the GPS track on the surface between the entry and exit points, providing an immersive visualization of your dives. Software updates are performed effortlessly, "over-the-air," ensuring that your device is always up-to-date with the latest features and security improvements. This seamless integration between the computer and the app significantly enhances the post-dive experience, transforming each dive into data that can be analyzed and shared.
